My favourite edit in ANH:R was the computer displays in the Rebel Base at Yavin. I was wondering if the Rebel Hoth Base could be touched up in a similar way? I'm thinking specifically about the screens in the control room (the room in which the lady says 'stand by Ion Control. And...fire'). Obviously nothing too over the top, but maybe the displays here could benefit from little digital annotations/text appearing across them, and possibly small digital diagrams and graphics flashing on the screens.

I thought the way the displays were handled in ANH:R was very tasteful, and it'd be great if the same could be done for Empire.

Good idea! I don't recall having heard that before, but I'm sure it entered Ady's mind. We're all too focused on fixing the little mistakes and ignoring the pretty improvements to be made!

I know, I'm amazed at the attention to detail of the posters here at this forum! I'm always impressed by the things people pick up in scenes of films which just pass me by! So I'm sure with the eagle eyed, perfectionist contributors here as well as Adywan's editing at the helm, ESB:R will be the definitive version of the film.

I just remembered something from the Special Edition of ESB that bugs the heck out of me:

The scene is on Bespin, right after the new Cloud Car flyby (after they've been there awhile), the scene cuts to Leia pacing in that lounge (Han walks in, she's worried about 3PO, etc.)

In the original version, the ceiling in that room had open slats and extended upwards to another set of slats where a sky light would be (you didn't see the actual sky light window, but saw light coming through with slats casting shadows that suggested a sky light.)

In the SE version, they filled in the lower slats with blue, giving the very poor impression of a skylight (I think they might even show a cloud car fly by over it.) What they didn't fix were the shadows that the slats higher up were casting. Now we've got poor looking windows (the edges are all fuzzy) and shadows that shouldn't even be there.

What's more, they didn't even need to do it! Though the exterior shot of the building in the SE is different than the original, the top of the building isn't that much lower that they needed to make the sky light visible in the interior shot. The camera angle isn't that low, so it's still completely plausible that there's a skylight in the ceiling just out of view.

The lighting looks so unnatural with the bad cgi skylight in that scene, it bugs the heck out of me. If it's possible to just restore the pre-SE scene, I could stop cringing when I watch that part.

Here's a little tidbit. The very next cut after we see leia, lando & company take off, we see a high shot of the thing vader and luke were fighting inside of. look at the window (i know, its hard to see on these pics cuz i don't have a good print on my computer) in both pics. they are different sizes and in different places.

I almost want to start releasing my score edits as AC3 instead of MP3 or FLAC

Interesting. Not having much experience with AC3, what would we need to do to listen to them with our regular players/on our stereos? Burn to a DVD and play on any DVD player? Would some sort of fancy authoring or conversions need to be done? Also, how would the files compare in size to FLAC?

Size wise, they are closer to MP3...

And if I can figure out a way, it would be something you could burn to a dvd and listen to in a home theatre system ;-)

To listen to them would require the program I mentioned in the scores thread, a program like "audio DVD creator".

I've made many DVDs with that program and when you set it to ac3 stereo and use the maximum bitrate, you get quality as good as PCM and don't have to actually use ac3 files at all.

For a true example, I made a DVD of your original trilogy scores with a setting of Dolby Digital 2.0 at 448kbps, and the total size was only 1.28GB.

Hey there Adywan, I think this has been noted; but, a lot of the new windows in Cloud City stand out. I can't grab any screens at the moment, but the particular scene where they appear to be running outside* has always stood out and not fit. In short, will you be leaving all updates in Cloud City, or restoring a few to the original way?

I made a list of things I saw when I watched the film today:

Things that annoy me about Empire:

1)Music Quality – This can definitely be improved upon.
2)The syncing between 'MAIN TITLE' and 'PRODE DROID ALT' is not correctly synced. I've never liked how it was synced in the film and think it should be returned to the original syncing.
3)The Taun Taun's eyes. I know you mentioned that you coudln't do much for blinking, but maybe you could do something with the pupils... making it look around?
4)The bottom of the puppeteers arm being visible as the Wampa strangles the Taun Taun
5)The horrible tracked fanfare as Han enters Echo Base
6)Possibly consider reinstating the cues for the entire opening sequence.
7)Fix the abrupt cut off of music as 3P0 walks up to Han to say no one can find Luke
8)Reformating the Ice Lair sequence to be closer to the original.
9) Changing the Wampa noise!!!
10)The lighstaber deactivation noise latter than heard OR change the lightsaber to deactivate when the sound is heard.
11) Replace looped music
12) The entrance to the base could have a bit more action going on than a bluish screen seen in the film (like when the doors are closing)
13) I know you're getting rid of the blue tint, but I would say at least to make sure that the fact its getting dark out is clearly visible.
14) The Unused “PROBE DROID RECONAISENCE” cue might be reinserted.
15) If you plan to extend the first shot of the Imperial Fleet further, use the album version of “Imperial March” as that is whats used in the film
16) It may just be me, but I swear that the image jitters a lot
17) Scenery change between Probe Droid alone and Probe Droid with Chewie.
18) Show the rebel turrets firing more
19) Resync the music for the destruction of the power generator
20) The Dagoba scene deleted from Episode III showed a lot more interesting creatures. Perhaps some of those could be incorporated?
21)Perhaps a reordering of the shots of Han and Leia talking... and Chewie looking for 3P0... maybe you could use the new shot to establish that you're back at bespin... cut to Chewie in the incinerator with the fighting. Then cut to the old establishing shot... show Leia talking to Han and then be interrupted by the door opening right after Leia says she doesn't trust Lando.
22) I agree that the ceiling to Leia's room should be returned to what it was along with some of the windows
23)The abrupt music cut off when Han is encased in carbonite... possibly to help the mix in of the alternate used moments latter?
24) Maybe get rid of the flub showing the lightsaber hand off after luke fights vader off of the carbon freeze area... (you see luke dissapear partially, and the end of the lightsaber he hands to the stunt coordinator pops out a bit in the center of the screen)
25)As Vader and Luke fight on the gantry, you can see the outline of where the actual filmed element is and the matte painting begins., especially during flares of light from lightsaver cuts
26) It might be cool to have the falcon pull a whisp of cloud away as it circles back to get luke
27)Possibly replacing the finale music with what was written?

I think I know the one you mean, and I also know why it stands out. This is the shot I'm thinking of.

http://img364.imageshack.us/img364/6780/esbgoofsf8.png

It's mostly beautifully done, but the trouble is, the railing, cityscape and sky are reflected on the floor, including *through* the reflections of the characters, which is a serious error. I love the new vista in that shot, and I hope Adywan can fix the reflections, but if he can't it ought to be returned to the original indoor shot.

Oh, my god. I'm not sure if it's a good or bad thing, but I never knew that shot was originally inside. o_0 I guess I grew up with the SE being the primary material, and so never really saw the original until recently. That's a little freaky- to see something so familiar be exposed for the modification that it is. Wow.

On that note, it would be nice to fix those reflections, but since I never noticed it before...

This is one of the shots that bothered me:

http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d89/BrachioInGen/before1.jpg
and then a few frames latter...

http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d89/BrachioInGen/after1.jpg

You could almost take the first shot, cut out the Wookie, add the smoke and shots yourself, and cut out the droid too.. it would keep the integrity I think better...

The second frame not only seems from a different angle, but it is also visually superior. Perhaps it is possible to place Chewy in the second frame, and use that as the first. That way, both shots have the nice contrast, etc., and they don't change like that.
Author

your saying second frame... you mean first?

Chewie is visible in the second one.

*Smacks forehead* I opened the frames in separate windows, because they did not immediately load. I had them backward. Thanks.

So yes, the frame without chewy in it looks better. Instead of the grayer frame with Chewy in it, maybe the nice frame with Chewy added in.

That better? :P

I think it would be nice to have some continuity between the two. It looks like two completely different times of day or weather patterns...

The first is all bright and sunny (the one I prefer) while the second is all dark and just kinda bluish white... not a lot of detail (the one with chewie that I don't prefer).

I also did a rough cut of what I meant by re-editing the cloud city scenes with Chewie looking for 3P0...
