Info: another 16mm print of SW on eBay

Oh, nice price. Do theaters show 16mm? Because, I think I know a place that might show it with some convincing...

Past experience tells me the price will go insane as it usually does. :(

Some universities have movie theaters on campus that run 16mm features. I doubt any modern multiplexes have the gear though.

It's unfortunate that every time a collector puts one of these up for sale publicly, it's one less source "out there" for possible preservation. I'm sure GL has someone watching for these all the time and will pay whatever price necessary to get them in his hands to destroy them.

You can go about your business. Move along, move along.

A local neighborhood movie theater might... shame I don't have any extra cash.

I've seen decent prints get into the $800 range. Even a "flat" (full frame) print went for around $600. Empire and Jedi are more rare, and go well past $100.

As for theories of Lucas buying these prints...I saw the usual suspects bidding on these prints all the time. Their feedback history painted a picture of film collectors with a wide range of interests, and money to burn! ;)

That's a horrifying thought! 8-0

Man, you'd think a dedicated Star Wars fan with access to the right equipment would have bought one of these by now and scanned the thing in at high res for a DVD preservation for Star Wars fans. Maybe someone on here will win this Star Wars prints and do just that. :)

In fact, Puggo - Jar Jar's Yoda offered to use his 16mm Workprinter to effectively scan in a print of Star Wars at high resolution if someone could provide him with one. Not as fast or efficient as a big professional machine, but apparently it's supposed to work great. :) See the thread link below (from before the new forum software) for details. If someone here would win this Star Wars print, Puggo could scan it in for them and then it's on towards Star Wars DVD heaven. :)

The Star Wars trilogy. There can be only one.

ok, i guess i am pretty naive, i was thinking $thousands...really only $800?

and why if empire and jedi are more rare, would they be a lot cheaper?
are the numbers off?

wouldn't it be pretty easy to get everyone to contribute and just pay
more than that amount?

heck, i might do it, if it really is that low...anyways...lets see how
it goes..

Indeed, although I'm not exactly sure what "high resolution" means. I don't have hi-def capability - the Workprinter scans are frame-by-frame at normal DV resolution. Also, the Workprinter doesn't have an anamorphic lens, which means I'd have to fake that in post.

Can it be fitted with one?

Since Puggo can only capture at DV resolution, would the end result be much different from the GOUT?

You know of the rebellion against the Empire?

I meant prints of Empire and Jedi go well past $1000. Damn typos!

The GOUT isn't anamorphic. ;)

I wouldn't recommend that anyone loan me a 16mm film with the expectation that the result will be better than the GOUT... it almost surely won't. Any value in transferring a 16mm print would be mainly for research purposes, as was the case for the 8mm Puggo Edition. And I suppose there could be interest in the soundtrack.

I don't think so, because it probably wouldn't correctly project through the external lens. (see http://www.moviestuff.tv/wp16_series.html). I did a little browsing on the web, and it seems that many people who are doing their own transfers of anamorphic super8 self-shot film are using Workprinters and converting in post. I'm not sure what's the most effective way to do that to get the best DVD conversion quality, but it's probably pretty straightforward.

Well, if someone were to provide an anamorphic lens (if one could be added in) for use during the project, that would help considerably. :) Would that then mean this could be captured at a res equal to or greater than DVD?

Because a capture at or above DVD resolution would mean that a superb dual-layer DVD could be made from that. This could be better than even the official Sept. 2006 DVD set, because it would be anamorphic and from an overall higher res source (above laserdisk res). In fact, even just having the print captured in anamorphic form would make it better than the GOUT, because that alone would provide higher res than a non-anamorphic source. Plus it would fit on widescreen t.v.'s without any need for zooming or stretching, which harm visual quality. :)

The Star Wars trilogy. There can be only one.

hmmm. how many "quality pixels" are in 16mm footage?

http://www.cinematechnic.com/super_16mm/resolution_of_super_16mm.html

This link says it's at least as good as 1080p uncompressed, or if not that, at least way better than standard NTSC resolution. The buyer does tell you it's a bit washed out, but a quick run through the levels function in avisynth or virtualdub could fix that quickly. That coupled with a number of other free-ware filters for motion stabilization and yadda yadda yadda, and we could probably end up with an OK looking transfer, for possible applications in DE-SEing projects if the shots could be cleaned up enough.

Can only capture at DV resolution, Puggo? Damn. At least having a 16mm print around the forums could be good for the community in general. I know we shouldn't hope for our very own special OT.com HD print of Star Wars if we bought it, but it could be something to experiment with around the community. It's nothing big to hope for, but who knows what could be done with it. I have $300 I'd be willing to throw down with anyone who'd like to go for it.

i am definitely serious about bidding on this,
if we can all figure out what to do with it, etc..

no, i dont have miraculous expectations of anyone
making a pristine print out of it etc...

it would be fun to have just to see it on a projector
(which i would also have to get)..

if it stays <$1000, then i'll go for it also..

Wait a day or so before going crazy bidding... I've got a lead on a print that I might start transfering this month. I've sent a message to the individual in an attempt to determine if the one on eBay is better quality or not. I should be able to report back tomorrow. There's still 3 days left in the auction.

And please don't expect 1080p from my Workprinter. Although 16mm film can indeed produce great results, you'd need a higher-end scanner (like the one GL has apparently mothballed - heh) to achieve THAT.

good, do let us know if this one is worth pursuing or not...
i'd hate to spend that much knowing there was a better
print floating around..

i too wait until the last minute when bidding, just to see how things
go....if it is indeed worth this much.....so much the better..

Oh, I know, but the community would have a good clarity print is all I mean. Plus maybe we can get a hook up in the future or something. It would be sweet if your lead could supply a better transfer, less money to spend.

OK - I got a response.

The print I have access to has "ANH" in the crawl.

If you folks are serious, I suggest a coordinated plan to bid on the one on eBay, which doesn't have ANH in the crawl. I'm willing to transfer it with my Workprinter, but I won't bid on it.
