The films were scanned by lowry at much higher resolution than dvd (2k or 4k?) and lucasfilm has those digital video masters, which they gave lower quality copies of to stations like cinemax better quality than the dvd still not full resolution equal to a blu ray release.


i was just taking a guess at the source..but after some digging...
yes, the studios do give some kind of high definition source
to the stations..more info...

however, problems are occuring, because some stations are
compressing the HD signal, like comcast :

i have downloaded some 'supposed' 1080p versions of SW, that aren't
from wookiegroomer.....but dang, they look good!!!!! my tv only does
1080i, and 720p...but still they look pretty sharp...so you're right,
they did come from some HD masters...
