Would that save you from having to do layers upon layers of color balancing from the get-go?

It would, but at the expense of picture quality. I think Adywan would have considered it for that very reason, but while the colours would be better, the other elements of the picture — clarity, resolution and grain, as well as all the SE enhancements he's keeping — would suffer. I believe Adywan's working from the HD broadcast of the 2004 version, making the difference between '04SE and GOUT much much bigger.

I don't know much about the technical aspects of applying the colour histogram from the GOUT to the '04SE; I believe it's been tried but I don't know what the drawbacks are. That's the method I would initially have tried but presumably Adywan has equally good reasons to reject it as well.

Sky traffic to Cloud City should especially be added after Lando's evacuation announcement. When the falcon flies off there is little sky traffic at all, I think there should be a lot due to the evacuation announcement.

Oh yeah. Thanks for reminding me. ;)

That ronto thing has always confounded me. George usually only does that sort of thing to hide a jump cut. But I'm not aware of anything being cut, so WHAT WAS THE POINT?

Was the original film irreperably damaged for a second?

Did George hate the white droid?

Was Marcia Lucas a background extra?

This is one of my great unanswered Star Wars questions.

</RANT>

I hate the ronto, too.

I guess it was just one of those show-off kind of "HEY LOOK WHAT WE CAN DO WITH CGI" things. In other words, there is no point to it.

The only "in your face" Ronto scene is the gag with the speeder and the jawas falling off. The other shots with the rontos - the wide helicopter shot of Mos Eisley and the couple of shots when the troops stop Luke - those are just background filler and aren't a problem.

My outlook on life - we’re all on the Hindenburg anyway…no point fighting over the window seat.

I think the shot people are referring to is when the 'speeder is stopped by the troopers and a ronto crosses in front of the camera, blocking the entire screen for a couple of seconds. It strikes me as very in-your-face and annoying.

I like this idea. If it's doable, it would be nice to see a few other ships getting the hell out of Dodge as the Millennium Falcon is jetting off itself.

I concur.

I was watching the GOUT ESB today. Adywan, I know you're not planning to alter any dialogue in this one but there's one part that often irks me: When R2-D2 is fixing C-3PO and Chewie is fixing the Falcon, 3PO repeats R2's lines back for the audience. It's pantomimish (and not in a good way) and dramatically unnecessary.

C-3PO: "Why don't we just go into lightspeed?"
R2-D2: <beep>
C-3PO: "We can't?"
R2-D2: <beep>
C-3PO: "How would you know the hyperdrive is deactivated?"
R2-D2: <beep>
C-3PO: "The city's central computer told you?"
R2-D2: <beep>
C-3PO: "R2-D2, you know better than to trust a strange computer!"

To my mind, no information is lost with the removal of "We can't?", since it's obvious they can't, and R2-D2's next line is enough explanation; same goes for "The city's central computer told you?". I'd like if either or both these lines could be excised without affecting the rest of the scene. For the first, it would be sufficient to just remove the line; it wouldn't need any actual removal of footage. The second line would be more difficult.

I like that sequence as is in the film. R2 'talks' short to 3PO all the time and 3PO always presses him for more information since R2 isn't always forthcoming about his thoughts.

I may be one of 4 people who actually like 3PO but I also think we should keep that the same.

Looks like the 'train' is staying in then, lol. I guess it's the rapid movement of it that puts me off a little, compared to the 'quieter', less frantic moment on the platform at that point that was present in the original GOUT version. Either that, or maybe it's that I would have preferred a 'monorail' track (I love monorails) to have been in place, rather than the 'flying snake' effect. I understand the reasons for keeping it in as it is however, so will learn to love it! I'm just delighted that Ady seems to want to do something about the Falcon's cockpit windows there though....

About that white 'artifact' that shows up on Darth's neck area during the slo-mo 'Dagobah Cave' duel, that was not part of the 'slight reflection' that is there on the base of his helmet....I just realised that this may not be on the source you are actually using Ady. But if it is, then there is likely to also be a couple of print damage 'artifacts' on the bottom left of the frame near the end of 'Empire', just as Luke has gone to stand beside Leia as she looks out at the Rebel Fleet. Certainly on my SE DVD there is. These weren't caught in the 'scrub-up'. I hate 'artifacts', and that's a fact!

Oh, I like 3PO, especially in this film, I just have a minor problem with the writing of that one exchange. Mostly they work around R2's inability to do exposition quite nicely, which is why this scene sticks out. You can replace R2's beeps with some piece of real dialogue most of the time, which is the test of how such a scene works. Eg. on Tatooine in ANH, the closest we come to this is:

C-3PO: "This way is much easier."
R2-D2: <beeps>
C-3PO: "What makes you think there are settlements over there?"

Here, R2's line could be something like "I need to find someone," whereas with the exchange aboard the Falcon the only plausible lines are basically identical to what 3PO says. Why would 3PO repeat it? He doesn't need to translate for anyone else's benefit.

I'll find some way to rationalise it if Ady keeps it, but I felt I ought to raise the issue.

There are people who don't like 3PO? I thought everyone loved the droids... (I certainly do)

Ady,

Great to see this coming into pre-production. I can't begin to describe how excited I am to see this in the making. As always, if you need anything during this process, let me know. The Star Wars community is a better place because of your contributions. Now that I have a new computer that works, I'll be more regular on this thread.

Well, I can't seem to download any of these clips. Whatever Java Rapidshare uses is not working with my Firefox or IE. Oh well...

Good to see you back nohandluke.

Just a quickie. Here's the first ever fix done for ESBR. Its only about 80% complete. there's still a few glitches to iron out but i just wanted to see if this was possible. Its probably going to be impossible to fix all the transparent cockpits in the Hoth battle but i think i may be able to fix the worse ones.

Again a split screen comparison so you can see how bad the original was (even when ILM said they fixed it already)

I did explain in my post and there a big clue in the link "Transparent cockpit". The cockpits are transparent and you can see the lasers and backgrounds through the cockpit. Just keep an eye on the walker as the speeder approaches it. you can see its shadow and then the4 model clearly through the cockpit struts

wow...

that matte fix is quite an improvment. I'm sure you'll get it even better. I couldn't stomach that battle on the 2004 DVDs. Hard to believe THAT was an improvement over the original!

the cockpits here never really bothered me much but this certainly is a big improvement already.

Dear Adywan,

Have you thought of adding some graphics to the blank screens in the cockpits, those cockpits look pretty dead. Perhaps some interface of sorts showing targets or proximities?

Keep up the great work...

hey guys . I found this on my computer. I downloaded it from some message board years ago. Someone added new lightsaber sounds and some music to the ESB duel. I am not saying I like all the music that was added, but it is interesting. I love the saber sounds. For the record I DID NOT MAKE THIS.
