Like a lot of people here, until recently I had only ever used torrents in order to download movies. I heard people talk about how great Usenet was, but:

a) I didn’t fully understand how to use it and, more importantly

b) I didn’t want to pay to use it when torrents are free.

However, as no torrent was forthcoming until just recently (thanks for remedying that, by the way, negative1), I decided to explore the realm of Usenet a little further. Ultimately, I was able to download the DVD9 from Usenet without paying a cent, and so, for those of you who wish to do the same, here’s what I did:

just to be clear, you're still paying your ISP, and by the way,
depending on who that is, a lot of them give free newsgroup
access (*or give you a limit to download)....

so if you're going this route, and don't want the hassle of
charging something on credit, cancelling, etc..(thats more of
a hassle to me)...and also people that don't have credit cards etc..

finally, the torrent has been up for all of : Added on Thursday, May 22, 2008

so , its been about 5 full days, and we're at 85% percent..and i expect
in a few more days, when there about 20+seeders or more i hope,
the time to get it will come down drastically..

i know it only took you 1 day to download from the newsgroups,
but you must have a very fast connection, as it took me all of
several days......so it wasn't any advantage to me at all...

i'm NOT trying to discourage people from using newsgroups,

but the LEARNING CURVE is WAY WAY harder than torrents,
(from my own experience of just learning how to use them)..

so depending on how confident / impatient you are...

weigh your options..........torrents still win out:
-----------------------------------------------------
+ easy to set up
+ easy to find
+ light learning curve
- might be slower originally

newsgroups:
---------------------------------
- hard to set up, HUGE LEARNING CURVE for newcomers
- hard to get access (credit hassle, etc if you want to subscribe)
+ might be faster if you have a good connection
