Dear colleagues.

If anyone has been able to download EMPIRE STRIKES BACK 3cd version from GM's pages please PM me...it seems that files are not available any more at GM pages and it seems that GM is busy...

If there will be need for web space for downloading I could also have some good suggestion where the files could be moved if there are problems with the space...

I'm guessing that he's pressed for server space so he keeps them in rotation. The only ones I could get were AOTC and ANH.

Hi again. Hope things are well with you, GM. :)

Any progress on somewhere to store these? I know people are willing to host them. I have the mp3 versions of ANH and I'm really hoping to get ESB and ROTJ sometime. No rush, just curious on if there's an ETA available. ;)

Thanks.

I want to first apologize to everyone for literaelly dissapearing...

And let me explain.

The FTP where all my edits were stored was wiped in a maintainence thing... I redid the site where you can access them, but after my computer started acting up, I didn't want to risk playing with the files or anything becuase of how my computer was acting.

I'm on my new one now but even that took a while as the first hard drive I bought died... I am on my old computers hard drive, but in the new computer now lol

So... things are acting a bit odd still BUT!!!

Back by popular demand, I will begin reuploaded all my scores EXCEPT Episode I.

I've decided to redo it. I have learned a great deal since my inital attempt, and after I finish the set I'm working on now which I will only call "TOD," I will begin work on Episode I again.

Is there an "IJAT" in front of "TOD"? ;-)

Awesome!

Will it be at the same link? The current one says you're going to be redoing E.T. too. Still going to do that or are you going to reupload the old set too?

So, glad you're back. Your music is going to make my seven hour flight to France very enjoyable. XD

I'm going to be redoing a few it would seem. I just finished redoing Family Plot.

I want to redo Episode I but that will take a lot of time.

ET will also take a little bit of time but not as much. My Original Edit was about half right. Somewhere along the line I lost my way and started editing the tracks to how they're heard in the film, rather than presenting the complete score. Don't ask. Not sure why. lol

I was curious... what are your all thoughts on AC3?

I have been toying around with it... and the file size is about the same as MP3... but the quality is the same as wav... if not better because it actually adds a slight filter to remove unneccesary noise, while focusing on what the human ear can perceive...

What's everyone thoughts on me releasing some of this stuff as 5.1 AC3?

I'm looking and in theory it may be able to... but I'm not getting a clear answer and I know when I tried, it did not work. I may simply release it as an alternative to MP3 and FLAC...

have one set of MP3 and one of AC3... personally I perfer it.

Perhaps you could upload one or two tracks in AC3? (or a whole CD, your call :P)
I'd love to give it a try :-)

Sure... I'm still toying with it. Trying to find a program that can play all the channels at once. Right now my program I'm using isn't properly mixing all the channels. I want to test how well the whole things works lol... but yes, give me a little and I will

What program are you using to encode the AC3 files?

If you're using any type of freeware, then you're better off with mp3 because a freeware-encoded 448kbps ac3 5.1 track sounds as bad as a 128kbps stereo mp3.

I 'upmix' film music into 5.1 all the time, and I do it channel by channel as WAV files, then load them into Audacity and play them in stereo, monitoring and adjusting the levels using my headphones. I use Sony Vegas to encode the 5.1 ac3 files because it encodes with professional quality. When I play back the finished music on my home theater system, it works every time.

I normally work with 5.1 surround music then assemble them as DTSWAVs, for burning onto a CD - a DTS CD.

You don't think I woudln't hear the quality difference? hehe

I use vegas.

I never assumed you wouldn't notice, but I've just learned through trial and error that no freeware ac3 encoder can output a high quality 5.1 track, but they can encode a very high quality stereo track because the bit rate can go as high as 384kbps for 2.0 channel and even free encoders handle that nicely.

Vegas is such a bitch to work with that I only use it for the final step - the encoding.

I listen pretty much only to film music. When I try to upmix a soundtrack album into 5.1, I try two approaches depending on what is most appropriate taking the album's stereo mixing into conderation:

-attempt to recreate the discrete 5.1 mixing as best I can by hearing it within the film. Often with scores recorded in England (Abbey Road/Air Lyndhurst recordings) have a concert hall reverb to the rears, and aren't as discrete as Hollywood recordings tend to be.

-create a slightly more discrete Dolby ProLogic II upmix effect, adding a slight delay to the rears.

I find if a score has a lot of ethnic percussion and woodwinds, that makes for a more discrete mix than the average orchestral score since those instruments tend to be limited to the center channel and therefore don't bleed through to the other channels as much.

Pretty much what I do. I'm working with a set that I already pre-edited and "mastered" so there isn't much need for anything past that...

I'm still toying with how to get the discreet channels... I wish there were a way to export it to ac3, and then separate the channels from the ac3 and check them... do you know of a way?

That's part of why I don't like using Vegas for anything but encoding, because you can't import ac3 files into it.

Best, most efficient way is to convert the ac3 into a six channel WAV file, then edit /inspect that. I do it that way because I use Audacity to edit (cut/paste/fade) the WAV files, and Adobe Audition to create the discrete channels using the 'center channel extractor' filters and so on.

You have an ac3 file I can check out? I'd love to hear an example.

I need to get Adobe Audition... it sounds like a great program.

That's what you use to rip the channels from the AC3?

I'm tempted to simply turn on my 5.1 and test it that way, but that, I don't think, will be as accurate as using my headphones...

I mean, the whole reason the SE set is fucked up is because they used speakers and had about half a day to remaster half the score... oye

And yes, I'm playing around with something right now... I'll post it in a moment.
