If it's fine in the browser, try right-clicking and copying the image, then pasting it into whatever program you're trying to open it with. That always works for me in that situation. (Of course this assumes you're trying to open it in some kind of editor, not just an image viewer.)

That was one of the first things I tried when it didn't work the normal way. No luck.
