The odd/even numbered theory has been slapped around for ages. I break 'em down as follows:
ST:TMP--greatly improved in the director's edition, but still cursed by the bigger=better mentality
ST2:TWOK--the best ST movie ever. Period.
ST3:TSFS--the best odd-numbered movie, but not as good as any of the even-numbered movies
ST4:TVH--the most populist of the series, and also the funniest. The ST movie to show to your friends who claim to hate ST
ST5:TFF--the WORST ST movie, bar none; Shatner should NEVER be allowed to direct again. EVER!
ST6:TUC--the movie that should have ended the original ST franchise, and for all intents and purposes did. A fine piece of work
ST:G--not bad--for a TV movie; as a feature, it's lacking, but still not as bad as ST5
ST:FC--the best of the NextGen films; Frakes proves his ability as a feature director, which leads to another theory: the 2nd-officer-as-director theory.
ST:I--Frakes falls prey to the odd-numbered curse, but still turns in a passable entry. Better than Generations, but not by much.
ST:N--must confess, haven't seen it.

Now, back on topic. The only way I really see a SW series working is if it's done for one of the premium cable outlets; not because of content, but because of how commercials tend to destroy the rhythm of the SW oeuvre.
