'i've got a bad feeling about this'

[commentary]

ok, at long last i finally was able to finish getting
this......and now that i've finished watching it,
here are some thoughts...

prelude
---------
for some weird reason, i got through getting 80% of it (ntsc dvd9)
from the newsgroup without any issue, then i started getting errors,
etc...and had retry getting it again separately...fine, it was my first
time getting something like this from a newsgroup, so it was probably
my error......then when i was 99% done, my connection slowed down,
taking an hour for the very last part..(probably didn't need the par
file, but got it to be sure)....another hour later of unpacking, unraring,
and getting the files ready...so far so good....then for some crazy reason,
i decided to switch some cables on the back of my computer, and then
i 'accidentally' unplugged the computer, and messed up my video connections
too.....half an hour later, i finally got the computer back up and running..
i finally got back to checking the unpacked files, and then trying to burn
the discs... burning went pretty well, in fact i had NO issues burning the DL dvd
without even using the fix, so that part was good..

the viewing
=======
i have my computer splitting the video between a 20in analog+19in widescreen
in dual mode, and a 32inch widescreen HDTV..so i set it to the TV...got the
burned disc, and used Nero vision to play it..(actually VLC player crashed
halfway through it at the layer change i think)....i have an altec lansing 5.1
hooked up, and the sound, music, and effects were all very well done,
and sounded excellent..the picture clarity, and colors were fine..

conclusions
=======
i enjoyed it a lot, but i realized that i probably won't watch it too many
times.....i looked at all the changes listed, and saw the differences in
the pdf file..[i have seen the previous version, and DVD5 once before]..

but for some reason, now i'm paranoid when i'm watching at all the
little changes that were made, some major, some not, some subtle,
and others blatant....

now, i've only watched the original-original versions about 20 times
or so, so maybe all the 'fixes' were things i had never noticed before..
i'm sure most people have seen it a lot more times.....but there's a lot
of things that probably didn't need fixing (if you didn't know about it)..
and now i feel paranoid watching this version at what was really there,
and what wasnt..

anyways, i realize that this wasn't supposed to be a 'replacement' for
the original-original versions (right?).....but it is a corrected 'reinterpretation'
true to the intent of the original , or what adywan presented...

technically/ideally
----------------------
i like the colors, i like the updated special effects, and some of the
SE elements are still there.. however, ideologically, in my mind,
i'll always be thinking about the newer changes....and by the way,
i didn't mind a lot of SE changes either (although i agree some of
those changes weren't needed either)...

result
-------
an excellent and unbelievable effort in re-invisioning 'star wars',
but in some ways, a little too 'correct', even with the 'purist' version..

i don't recommend it for die-hards, as they probably want the
'vintage edits', or just the straight 'preservations' of the LD's etc..

for newcomers, that didn't like the SE, but liked some of the
restorations, its a little more palatable, but some changes still stand
out too much

for the fans that get all the edits, this is the premiere version..

-------------------------
in the end, i guess it comes down to your mentality if you can take
the changes...

however, for me, i think the original-original versions were enough
for me..
