And to Ady: Great shot, but I thought you were taking some time off, fella! ;)

Well i got a bit bored. Just didn't know what to do with myself with all the extra free time. lol

I'm only actually doing a simple colour correction pass for now. i'll be doing a more accurate shot-by-shot correction after i've had a few months break, but i just wanted to get this part out the way first.

Well work on ESB:Revisited has begun. I've started some colour correcting tests and, thanks to what i learned on ANH:Revisited, its coming along nicely.

Here's a quick comparison shot so you can see the difference in the colour:

Wow! I didn't know it was so blue, either!

And 'work has begun'? You mean, no break b/w ANHR and ESBR? I mean, I'm not complaining, but...you sure you're feeling up to it, Ady?

EDIT: Sorry, didn't notice Ripplin's question and your response, Ady. Got it.

You'll have to check out his last reply, Amras. There will be a break, hopefully, for the sake of his health and family. Heh.

Edit: just saw your edit, Amras. Ha!

And looky there! The Death Star on Hoth. Can you put racing stripes on it? I feel that would be pretty sharp.

Well after completing the first colour correction pass i'm pretty glad that i ahve decided to start this stage a lot earlier. The colours are more messed up than ANH. This is going to take hell of a lot more time than ANH to fix the colour issues. They really messed up on this one. You can go from one shot that is over blue, next one has a green tint, next one almost perfect, then one with a red tint amongst other horrors. At least with ANH the colour variations didn't change so frequently.

This one is going to be a nightmare

Ouch... It's too bad there isn't a button you could press called "perfect color" or something like that. ;) That one screenshot you've posted shows an amazing difference already. I'd like to see a comparison with one of these green and/or red tinted shots you've mentioned. Oy!

Hope you don't get too bogged down or stressed with this. Perhaps move to Amish country for a couple of months if that would help. Heh.

It's of course almost always better for things to be the proper color, but I really don't mind the blue hue in the Empire DVD. It makes it look colder. However, on the other hand, in the interior falcon shots it kinda looks like Han's wearing lipstick due to the color issues.

One of the joys of 'Star Wars Revisited' was seeing some of Adywan's colour-improvement in many scenes, and I must say that I personally rather the 'naturalistic' colour of the above example, rather than the 'blue-hued' version we got.

This Hoth scene will look great in 'white' again.

You call it "post-production". It's sad that you have to start at the end to get to the beginning.

Indeed.

Are there any audio issues in this one like ANH? I haven't heard of anything screwed up (aside from the deliberate things like Boba Fett, etc) and I haven't noticed anything myself, but I don't have surround sound so any issues like swapped channels and such aren't as apparent with my setup.
Hopefully the audio side of things will be easier this time around.

yes, this looks awesome as always..

however, just looking at the screenshots (maybe its my monitor/tv)..

these look fine (revisited):
==================
1 han in hangar
2 han in hangar 2
3 luke in ice cave
5 officers talking
6 leia and c3p0
9 troops in snow

i prefer the '2004 dvd' colors for these:
=========================
4 han smiling and leia
7 snowspeeder shot
8 leia and troops

sometimes the colors look natural,
sometimes they're too bright, its hard to explain..

maybe there could be a balance between the two..

I must agree with negative1 on #7: snowspeeder shot. When you recoloured the image you took away most of the blue from the sky. If there is some way you could isolate the original 2004 DVD sky and keep it the same, that would be great.

i think all the colour corrections overall make the frames look alot sharper and the image quality is improved significantly, ie the bluish tinges did make the colours too similar and dated.

were they tinged blue deliberately though to make the planet seem colder and alien? i was wondering because now the tinge has gone (mainly with exterior shots) it does feel like something is missing as it may run the risk of looking too "real" (sounds daft i know!).

there is one particular scene that always bugs me as it looks SO fake in comparison to the rest of the hangar scenes. it is of three rebel soldiers talking, with a rebel transport in the background (it appears right after the scene with the "general veers prepare your men" scene) i think the contrast on the actors is far too high in comparison to the background as well as the fact they do appear to be just stood in front of a painting.

the whiteness as oppose to the blueness makes the colour palette far more inline with ANHR (i cant wait till you fix the AOTC colours!:D)

as you are now making my favourite film all the more perfect, i owe you a huge THANKYOU!

ignore this post if it is too wild, but do you think the hoth battle would be more intense in a snow storm? would that be too difficult and outlandish to do?

Don't start nitpicking just yet. Remember this is Ady's first pass at color correction on TESB:R. He'll undoubtedly go back and tweak things shot by shot once he gets the levels balanced out in general.

My outlook on life - we’re all on the Hindenburg anyway…no point fighting over the window seat.

That's an awesome idea. I wonder how hard that would be to do without it looking fake. Battles are always more intense in crappy weather.

who's nitpicking? we're just commenting on the screenshots up there..

of course it's too early to say what its going to look like, thats
why we're giving our opinions now to offer some feedback..

anyway, the idea of adding elements, like snowstorms, etc...
is fine if doable.....but i think it wouldn't be that subtle...

and it might stand out too much...

I like the heavy snow idea as well....it might make the battle seem more intense and at the same time cover up some of the dated look of the film...?

You know, I never would have thought of that. To me ESB needed very little done, just colour, continuity and deletion of some SE elements. But both the DS2 idea (even after the credits or as a deleted scene) and the snowstorm idea (if Ady could pull it off, which I bet he could) would be neat.
