Hi Adywan.

Have been watching your original XVID edit for the 3rd time today, and was once again marvelling at the work you've put into this. I'd love to see the proper DVD version but alas our download limit is only 3GB, and then we have a 'fair use' policy which means I cannot download all day! AGhhhhhh!

Anyway I was watching the part where Ben is deactivating the reactor, and for some reason the sound effect used in the original Flash Gordon Republic serials for the sound of the ships flying popped into my head! (as it does.....!!!). I think this effect would really bring the tractor beam alive - seems to fit the visual perfectly. It would also be a nice little homage to Flash Gordon, which of course Star Wars was based upon...

I know you've 'locked off' your edit now, but if you did wish to use it as a last minute sound FX tweak I could mail you the soundeffect WAV next week.

Thanks again for what is clearly the definitive version of Star Wars now :)

Will you be using a different font for the DVD9 menus? The text on the DVD5 looked rather... cheap imho.

Oh, and will there be Dutch subtitles on the DVD9? The first nfo of the DVD5 mentioned them, but they weren't on the final version. I know it has been translated by 8t88, so I was wondering.

No, the font will be the same. Not sure what you mean by "cheap" looking. They display fine on my DVD player and look as good as retail DVDs i have. There won't be any extra sub tracks either. There were a few problems with the Ext5ra subs that i just couldn't fix so i had to leave them off.

I am toying with the idea of a commentary track now though.

Yes, yes, YES! Will it be a pain in the ass? Yeah, probably. Will it delay the release a couple of weeks? More than likely. Will it be worth it? Yeah, I think you'll be glad you did it.

Really, it's the perfect topper to the project. Heck, just talking about the Great Flipper Debate should fill ten minutes! ;)

While my first reaction to reading Adywan's post was an apathetic "Eh", Ron's opened my eyes to its possibilities.

This is the chance to make an auditory essay, interacting with the video and audio, and I'm looking forward to it. Fascinating as the subtitle commentary is, the audio commentary has the chance to go beyond the "what" and explore the "why" and "how" questions --- and that's too good to miss.

Only suggestion is to outline your intended talking points beforehand, so that in the moment of recording you don't suddenly wonder what might have come next.

My favorite parts of "The Phantom Edit" and "Attack of the Phantom" were the editor's commentaries on what he changed and why, and I already have FAR more of an emotional connection to this project. Wish I didn't have to wait....

Glad I could help! :)

Plus you'll get to flesh out the details of those shots that simply say "FX" on the subtitle track... which I must say I found a wee bit frustrating, wanting to know so much more.

Definitely. Good example of a very well-prepared commentary: Robert Rodriguez, "El Mariachi." The guy barely takes a breath!

That would be great! Please do it!

You know of the rebellion against the Empire?

Yeah, just seeing FX is not enough, i know i'ts a new cgi scene and all, but i'd like for you to talk about how you did it, why & how you did it, would definatly be worth it!

I read through the first 100 pages of this thread to get some idea behind the "how" and "why" of many of the changes, and I got some answers. But I'd love to hear and see a lot more, especially of the "how".

Well the "how i did it" side of things would be impossible to explain in a commentary.

Maybe, but you'll have a lot of down time where you don't have a lot of specifics to offer about a particular scene, and that time can be filled with getting into your process, etc. No detail is too boring. :)

Yeah, but Ady's got a British accent -- that goes a long way. Whip a little faux-Attenborough on 'em and you can make anything sound interesting.

I liked Ben Burtt's stories about raccoons in a bathtub and things like that.
