Well there have been some really interesting ideas floating around so i think its about time i answered some of these.

I will definitely be doing ESB first. After the monster that ANHR became it will be nice to tackle something that won't take as much work. I really do feel that ESB is almost perfect and most of the things done will be cosmetic. ROTJ on the other hand is going to be hell. As it stands now i think that it's going to need a lot more work done than even ANHR. I'm actually really itching to get my hands on the PT. I have so many ideas worked out already but i just wish that they would release a better transfer of TPM & with the CG Yoda. I hate that puppet.

I probably won't be adding any scenes into this one. I was toying with the idea of adding the "General Veers Death" scene but I may just do it to keep it for a deleted scene extra.

Editing wise it will be closer to the Original Theatrical version that the SE. Quite a few SE elements will be going. eg. The Wampa will be once again a more mysterious creature. All SE shots that we see the Wampa clearly will be going.

Vader's "bring my shuttle" line will return so most, if not all, of the shuttle additions will be gone.

Some of the new windows may be replaced with the original walls or reduced. I loved the claustrophobic feel that their escape had originally. I won't be removing them all but a few. I want to keep a couple of the windows so you can see TIE's shooting down some escaping craft (just an idea at the moment and may not happen)

No added planets to either the Imperial fleet reveal or the finale will happen but i may be adding in a few familiar ships into the rebel fleet in the finale.

i do want to do something with the mynocks but what the hell i can do about them i'm not sure as yet.

i may add a few more background TIE's to the asteroid chase, but not many, if any at all.

Most of the FX will just be cleaned up and not replaced like in ANHR. I don't think ESB needs it for the most part.

Highly doubtful that any music will be added to this one apart from the end credits to remove the bad SE looping.

At the moment it's looking like a September start date for this project and will take at least a year to finish.

Add A-wings (and maybe even B-wings) to the finale and you will make me really happy :D
Maybe you should add a few TIE bombers to the scenes with the imperial fleets. The only times we actually see those are when they are bombing the asteroids. Adding a few other ships (such as the TIE interceptor) would be great, too!
Another idea could maybe be a few TIE bombers over Cloud City, ready to drop 'em at any time. :P I got this idea from a youtube video, in which a fleet of TIE bombers destroy the rebel base (actually another Cloud City in the video :P)

Adywan - Great to see some of your latest decisions on this project are ones that I'd hoped for.

Interesting to see what you are initially planning doing with your Wampa sequence. I'm curious to see if you end up making the first seen 'yellowish nose and eye area' design with hair covered horns, match up somewhat with the later 'lair' design that rushes at Luke, which features a 'furry' nose and eye area, prominent ears, and protruding horns...or not. I'm not expecting an answer to this at the moment by the way, but I flagged up some options recently, and accept things may even stay much as they stand.

Something I'd REALLY love to see improved would be that dreadful shot where the Millennium Falcon turns on it's side into a 'crevice / canyon' after skimming over the surface of the large asteroid evading the tie-fighters, and there's an explosion. The very poor colouring and effect of the shot at this point look awful compared to the rest of the whole sequence, but I don't know if you are able to improve on things in some ways. Fingers crossed.

You're right, ady; ROTJ will surely be hell to edit, and you totally deserve a break and something a bit less demanding for a while. ESB is as you said a nearly flawless movie as it is, and most channges would simply be about removing some SE additions. For instance the wampa snow creature. Although I can't say that I really care about this scene one way or the other. The sequence only gets better for me after Luke staggers out into the cold and Han risks his life to find him.

I know its your edit ady and your desision, but I would suggest not removing too many of the SE windows. The OT is a little too cramped at times, and I liked how they opened the place up. Since you specifically mentioned the escape, perhaps you can keep the windows in the "Lando gives a grand tour" segment and only remove them in the escape sequence?

And finally, not to be repetetive but I would still advocate for a very subtle Emperor's theme in his scene. I've heard versions of this that are so quite that they are barely audible, but it still gievs a perfectly eerie feel and would IMO improve the scene and it connects so closely to the character, like some other posters agreed. But if you decide against it, I won't mention it again. It's totally your call, and I don't wanna get annoying. I only mentioned again because you didn't comment on that particular thin and I got curious.

I was watching TROOPS last night and thought the presence of TIE's in atmosphere (or near ground level, anyway) looked strange. Without this becoming a nerdy debate on the capabilities of such a craft, can anyone remind me if there are any parts of the films in which we see a TIE *not* in space?

Yes, in ESB. Just as they are rescuing Luke from the weather vane

Ady, what exactly is the problem with the mynocks in ESB? I always thought they looked fine.

I'd have to say that I never really saw a problem with them either. But then again, I don't know much about special effects and I can't say I was watching them too closely.
Author

You've got to be kidding! The mynocks look terrible, the special effect is barely accomplished, and one gets the sense that someone is off-set with a fishing rod danging some prosthetic wings around on a string. There isn't even the pretense of "flight" on the part of the mynocks. I understand TESB is the sacred cow of the Star Wars saga, but that doesn't make it as perfect as all these gushers claim. Anyway, thats my two cents.

Huh, well, to each his own I guess. Personally I find they're onscreen so briefly and in such tight shots that it's difficult to tell how they look one way or the other. My bigger gripe would be with the hand puppet space slug and the poor visual effect of the Falcon escaping from it (although I'm not sure there's much that can be done about the former).

--Plus, the scene with Han, Leia and Chewie walking around inside the space slug is quite unrealistic to my standards; you should remove the mynocks and the three walking around inside the space slug, and leave it to making repairs inside and the shaking as the TIEs drop their bombs.

--The space slug is not very impressive either, but it looks more like stop-motion to me; better smoothen it out.
-Or maybe you could have a new shot, with the falcon approaching the camera and the space slug behind it. What do you think?

This isn't a suggestion, but I thought it would be cool to see the slug chase the falcon through the asteroid field. Kind of like how that giant eel thingy chases the gungan sub in episode 1. I know it doesn't sound realistic, but it's Star Wars. Nothing has to make sence.

"Vader's "bring my shuttle" line will return so most, if not all, of the shuttle additions will be gone."

Thank God for that! In my mind this was the single most hurtful aspect of the ESB SE. The music scoring for this section of the film is nearly Shakesperian in intensity and flows superbly. There's hardly any dialogue in this last act and it almost works like an opera relying on the intensity of the music. The sudden and jarring editing of music just to insert a worthless CGI shuttle sequence just absolutely destroys the flow of this wonderful scene. I bet John Williams just had his head in his hands at this point!!!

As for the sound mix, the scene were Chewie is throttling Lando, some of Leia's or Threepio's (can't remember off-hand) is suddenly burried beneath Chewies roaring! Yes another example of a rushed sound re-mix for the SE's. Is it possible to reinstate the sound for this scene using another mix?

Cheers!

After Leia does a Vulcan nerve-pinch on Chewie, a larger slug will eat the first one, inspiring Han to say, "There is always a bigger slug." Going out on a limb here, but I think the scene would be too much. The drama of almost getting squished in the slugs teeth (note: slugs don't really have teeth) works just fine in the movie.

I believe correllian77 is correct, the space slug is a hand puppet, not a stop-motion figure.

I think a similar technique was used for the slug as was used for the Rancor- the film was slowed down (or shot at a faster frame rate) so that they would appear more massive and lumbering when the film was projected back.

I've been thinking about what else might need to be changed in Empire. Everyone has said pretty much all of my thoughts, except for one. While leaving Hoth, Luke and R2 have a conversation via a translation screen.

http://img222.imageshack.us/img222/1598/r2d2transorigxo1.jpg

There are several things about this that could use help. For one, the panel drifts while the text stays in the exact same spot. Another thing would be to replace the text with Aurebesh, meaning we'd have to come up with lines for R2. And lastly, the whole panel is pretty lackluster. I came up with some ideas to help this.

http://img222.imageshack.us/img222/1568/r2d2transkb4.jpg

I added some red-tinted scanlines to the screens, where it might be neat to add more interfaces in the smaller screens. I added a translation in Aurebesh ("query: would you like me to take over for you?", a la HK-47's speech pattern) and a screen showing R2.

I noticed in these scenes besides the usual side shots of R2 from the wing, there were a few head on shots from inside the cockpit I thought these could be shots from a camera pointed at R2 for this reason and could be recycled for the few seconds the panel is on screen.

http://img216.imageshack.us/img216/1269/r2d2closeupns8.jpg

And in the original shots using that camera angle, we could have the screen-like overlay over that video, showing what Luke sees when he's looking at the panel.

What do you guys think? Too much for too little of a shot? There are only two short shots leaving Hoth, and one from Return of the Jedi while leaving Tatooine.

doubleofive, that's an interesting idea. The thing is that i set myself a few ground rules when starting the Revisited project. The Rebel ships look battered and old and the rebellion probably wouldn't have the resources to upgrade all the ships. So i decided that The ship displays would not get a revamp, just fix a few issues with colouring etc. I will be fixing the movement issue with the display, and probably replace the lettering but i won't be adding anything else. This is what, for me, separates the PT & the OT. In the PT everything looks new and hi-tech but in the OT everything had an old & used feel about it. Even in ROTS the ship displays started to have a mor3e retro feel about them (Jedi Starfighters) so i want to keep this feel.

On to the Mynocks. There are a few shots i want to try an enhance. They really do look like they're on strings and puppet-like. Not sure how I'm going to do this yet but it is something that has always bugged me, along with the polythene you can clearly see on the floor. The slug i have always liked. i may do a few tweaks to this but certainly won't have it pursue them through space. This slug hides out in an asteroid waiting for its prey. If it could chase things through space then it wouldn't have the need to lie in wait like that.

I understand your point of view. The more I worked at it, the more odd it looked compared with the rest of the cockpit. Maybe you could just put the R2 video feed in the top box, like this:

http://img217.imageshack.us/img217/1322/r2d2trans2ku2.jpg

Maybe add some more text with scrolling something or other.

Just some more food for thought.

EDIT: Of course, if you look at the scale of things (the big handle to the right of frame), the box with the text is maybe 4 inches (10 cm) tall, so the box with R2 would be about 1/2 an inch (1 cm), which would be silly to have a video feed in at all.

In the end, I'll be happy with just the text change. But what should it say? Who has the audacity to write words for the immortal R2-D2?

lol!

nothing says '1980' than a tape deck. Maybe Ady should put in a cassette of a Meco album.

While we are on the subject... do we actually see any other parts of the X-wing control panel in the other SW movies? I know we see the targeting computer in ANH. It would be nice to have the controls match in all three movies if they don't already.
