A question for OBtwosy:

Do you have a copy of the logo you are using that isn't filled with holes? Your magic wand tool or masking tool looks like it didn't select the image properly.

I'd love to use it for another project I am working on.

No, the mix has been rebuilt using various sources. At the last count i was using 225 separate audio tracks to create the 5.1 mix. It uses the 2004 DVD 5.1, the SE laserdisc 5.1 & extra effects from my star wars effects library. I was able to gain better separation by adding more sound effects and ambience where needed and also rebuilding the complete mix from the ground up in places. It was surprisong to me just how bad the official DVD mix is. not only do you have reversed music in the rear channels but hell of a lot of the sound FX are coming from the incorrect sides in the front channel. Ben Burtt made one hell of a cock-up with this mix. I can't see how the hell anyone at ILM couldn't have spotted this.

I'm still not 100% happy with the mix and i might be doing some more tweaking for the final release. As it stands now i'm about 90% and i doubt i will get it to 100% but there are a few things i want to redo for the DVD-9's

Adywan, a curious question: after Tarkin says that the Emperor dissolved the Senate, what does that one officer in foreground say? You said you added in a line from the radio drama to match his mouth movement. What was that line?

Out of curiosity.

Adywan, did you have to rebuild the soundtrack for the Cantina scene or was that pretty much left as it was?

That scene was pretty much rebuilt but used the 2004 track as a basis. It you listen to the 2004 DVD some channels were reversed. Look at the shot where the worm guy pops up (where wolfman used to be). his vocalization comes out of the right speaker when it should be coming from the left (and always has done). I also added a lot more ambient sound in all channels and the music is different too. I added some reverb effects to the soundtrack, The Cantina music always sounded like musical score in a studio rather than a piece of live music in a busy bar

That is absolutley amazing.....when listening to it you would think you had what Ben should have had at his disposal to create the sound track. Even though you may not be 100% happy.....it is 1000% better than it was and I would put money on it everyone is more than 100% happy with it. In alot of ways the way you mixed the sound is what gave alot of the movie its new life. Yes I love all of the visual stuff as well but everyone knows a good sound track makes the movie and the detail is just awesome. Thanks for the answer!

Adywan,

Did you have any luck with that 'little' project you were looking at for me?

As I understand it there is no mistake from Ben Burtt's part : reversing the rear channels was intentional. Don't ask me why he did this though, sounds as dumb to me as it does to you.

I think it's more likely that its was a total cock-up and the whole "creative decision" spin was just so they didn't have to replace all the discs sold with new ones with corrected audio. If this was a creative decision then why are some of the front channel FX reversed too?

Man, seems like everytime you think you've corrected everything more things are noticed! I notice when Luke blasts the controls to the bridge and door before the swing across the chasm with Leia, there are no black blast scorch marks there but they appear a few seconds later for the rest of the shots in the scene, and in that same scene when the stormtroopers shoot at the door right as Luke and Leia lower it, a blast shot scorch is there before the stormtroopers hit the same spot. Damn, too late anyway. It's one of those things where u polish everything up so nice and a few minor things stick out all the more.

I'm a little late with posting this but I just wanted to input that the mix sounds fine to me as well. Star Destroyers should shake my house off the foundation....:)

It was awesome....cranked up my crappy 5.1 system as loud as it would go....

I love everybody. Lets all smoke some reefer and chill. Hug and kisses for everybody.

Hey don't ask me. I never even noticed they mixed up the channels!

Just watched the NTSC repack, with all of Adywan's changes explained via the special features. A ton more stuff was fixed than I thought.

So....I kind of miss the Jabba scene....I think it really helps with understanding Han's story and obvious developments within' the trilogy.

Oh well, I wish I knew how to add that scene back into the movie, but other than that, this movie is very relevant again. I can actually watch EPIII now, and not feel like I am going back in time, yet supposidly into the future of the saga. Thanks again brother Ady.........so what will be different on the DVD9? Peace....

Hello Adywan,

I just watched the NTSC version for the 3rd time and I had a few questions.

1. In the Death Star Hanger Bay Control room (where how to disable the tractor beam is discussed) you added in a missing 4th blaster rifle (which originally had 4) However, it is only missing after our hero's have departed to the detention center. Our hero's don't have one of those types of weapons until they go there (and give it to chewie). Isn't that missing rifle the one that chewbacca is using in the detention center? Just a thought.

2. How many TIE fighters are there in the big reveal? Also did you count how many TIE's and Rebel fighters you see blowing up on screen and background to end up with 9 Rebel fighters left?

I explained this a while ago that there is a continuity error with the gun missing in the scene where 3po is talking to Luke while they are in the trash compactor and then it reappears when the troopers discover the droids. it was easier to add the missing gun than to remove one from the next shot to fix the error

There are about 40 TIEs. Only a small amount of the ships are seen being destroyed on screen

Wait 3PO was not in the control room when talking to Luke in the compactor. Wasn't he already down in the dock area? (Took R-2 down to "maintenance")
