I guess Cinderella's on my "screwed up, need to replace" list then, instead of my "plastered" list.

Hey, can we get a few more comparison clips? Maybe from "be our guest" or something?

I'll MU the Be Our Guest from the DVD I torrented...take a while though, it's a 286 MB VOB

EDIT: CLARIFICATION: I don't own the R1. I have a shrunk copy of the R2 (NTSC) version, so any samples I'd make from it would be trash quality considering the whole movie is compressed to under 2 GB. (Don't ask.)

A second thought, as I said the movie is 1.9 GB on a shrunk disc... if that's a 50% shrink, then the biggest it could be on the actual disc is 3.8 GB... that's with 3 audio tracks (384, 448, 192) - my LD rip has only 1 audio track (256), so there's clearly a lot more space for the video track, as the VOBs add up to 4.0 GB!

This is upscaled slightly.

I'm only on page3 of reading, so I'll post from that point:

Song of the South- I'm the one who distro'd Mentor's BBC cap from 2006, and I still am doing so. It is the version that Doctor M got to try to convert.

Ghibli- I have a dvd5 of Totoro R2 japanese, and it is dubtitled with the old Fox dub. Any dub before the Fox dubs of Totoro and Kiki were only used for Flight purposes (so japanese businessmen could learn some english before touching down in the US). I also have Castle of Cagliostro with the original dub (r2 jap dvd9), and it too is dubtitled on the japanese dvd release. The japanese ghibli dvds have this habit of being dubtitled except for recent releases (my 4dvd Howl's (retail r2 jap) is NOT dubtitled and has the dub on it, and my Earthsea dvd5 is NOT dubtitled and has the dub on it).

Little Mermaid - I think that Doctor M's preservation might be the best out, so you might just wanna skip this one.

Aladdin- If anyone has the ADigitalMan version, then this one can be skipped too. If not, go for it.

Ok, back to more thread reading.

I rejected Aladdin's DVD video on account of, at the very least, the end credits. (It is, however, OAR.)

If, as I believe, the primary video source for the Mermaid restoration is the SE, it's not OAR, so I will prefer the old DVD on that account alone.

(Yes, I'm picky)

Though I do appreciate the work you guys have done - it's also a learning experience for me and drf to work on these restoration projects

speaking of LDs, I just won stuff off ebay I kinda wasn't expecting to win (though they are nothing spectacular):

Lion King
Who Framed Roger Rabbit
Secret of Nimh
The Aristocats
Hunchback of Notre Dome (only one I don't really want)
Fantasia Deluxe CAV edition

and I'm winning a Beauty and the Beast LD now....

Damn this thread for making me want to look on ebay for Disney LDs...lol

Is there a preservation out there of a version of Fantasia with Deems Taylors' original narration audio?

How much are the laserdiscs going for? Is there any list of the features that didn't make the dvd's? I've seen just about all the disney laserdiscs in an independent video store with a huge selection of everything.
The first laserdisc of Little Mermaid is 1.85:1, the rerelease with some features that I don't recall seeing on my platinum edition is 1.66:1.
The back of the Lion King laserdisc says it is 1.85:1, is this correct or a misprint?

Haven't gotten 'em yet.

The LI DVD (1999) of Little Mermaid is 1.66:1 non-anamorphic, unaltered. It's safe in our hands (drf can easily obtain it, and I have a -R).

An OTV is feature enough to make a LD worth buying, if the DVD don't have it.

I've been sourcing my discs at roughly $10 apiece, that's shipping-included, from "Laserdiscs by Duff" on evilBay.

Since the WIP on the DVD isn't the proper workprint but a mix of workprint and SE...

Yes, I would be interested. (I *do* have a LD player, and that's on my list of LDs to acquire and rip.)

My friend's trying to negotiate for a copy of a workprint for Aladdin. He managed to procure a 15-sec. sample that includes "cut off your ear".

My LDs are in the mail, and damn the post office for not updating their page! When I get them, I'll rip them, and then see what I can do with them. I know my friend will prefer the DVD video of Aladdin and Cinderella, but I think I got him convinced on Lion King. (Minus side though: We only found out about the CAV Lion King *after* I bought the CLV version. So I've still got Lion King on my want list.)

I have a Lion King in the mail to me, but i don't know which version it is yet. I won it in a lot of 5 for like $10 shipped (along with Roger Rabbit). When I get it, I'll let you know.

Nice! Is that the censored scene from Make Mine Music or Melody Time? I keep confusing which cut a whole skit and which removed the smoking for the region 1 but not region 2. Was it censored on the vhs (if there was a vhs)? Why is it window boxed?
Someone mentioned they acquired the Japanese R2 of Aristocats. What about the old dvd (which I just got used at gamestop)? I thought the picture looked pretty good and not over Lowry "restored."

Yeah, drf said that was untouched...

Though the R2 I dug up seems to be newer, it might be based on the GCC master as well?

I myself would be interested in any such preservations of the "fab four" (Mermaid, Beast, Aladdin, and Lion)...especially a correct aspect ratio for Beast. I want the movie as I remember it, and I support all of your work on these projects.
