Well, I don't mean just the ending. I mean everything throughout. The "old" kids for one. It's not obvious, at least to me, what/who they are on the first viewing.

I thought the senile children were old test subjects that were unable (or unwilling) to achieve the same ascension process (towards ultimate evolution) that Tetsuo (and Akira before him) had achieved. At the time I didn't quite understand why the maker of Akira wanted an ass like Tetsuo to become the creator of a new, big-banged reality, but I'd now guess that he was trying to comment that only someone as immature as Tetsuo would want to become "God." If so, I'd guess he has a view of evolution that defines it as the ambition of an insecure mind.

Uh, they weren't senile. They're psychics, just like Akira and Tetsuo. You're right that they weren't able to go as far in the psychic process, but they were still psychics.

I never really saw it as Tetsuo wanting to become "God" either. I always saw it as a guy who was picked on and made fun of his whole life (even by his best friend) suddenly having the ability to fight back and not wanting to stop using that ability. Kind of like Anakin learning to use the Force. No matter what happened, he kept getting attacked, so he did what pretty much anyone else would do...fight back and keep fighting. The problem was that the more he used it, the more it got out of control until it consumed him. If I'm not mistaken, when Akira was achieving "ascension", they were able to at least contain it. When Tetsuo did it, they simply couldn't get to him in time, though they were able to blow his arm off

I meant senile as "of or belonging to old age or aged persons."

Otherwise, I think Tetsuo liked using his powers too much. Even when he lost conscious control, I'm guessing the desires and fears of his psyche still perpetuated the process in an unconscious form. He basically wanted to be omnipotent. I don't think it was a thing like the dark side of the force or anything. I could be wrong as you say, but that makes more sense to me at the moment. Keep in mind I haven't seen the movie more than once. Though, I think I own it so perhaps I'll get it out and watch it again.

this movie has epic fail written all over it and is an obvious hollywood cash in.

like the people who are trying to make evangelion or ghost in the shell into live action movies, i say as an anime purist boycott them. they will only take out the asian culture and backgrounds and re-write them as american with bad american actors.

i hope that the stalled starblazers movie for instance never gets off the ground.

in the immortal words of the prequel trilogy vader when first hearing of an akira movie "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!"

i think the neon genesis evangelion films would have been mildly interesting with weta workshop being the studio making them with adv and peter jackson directing. but they seem to be dead in the water as much as the peter jackson halo movie.

On the one hand, Trent Reznor annoys the hell outta me, NIN is about as overrated a band as they come and most of their fans make me want to strangle someone.

On the other hand, Trent Reznor did the score for the original Quake, and it was among the most brilliant video game soundtracks I've ever been witness to.

Basically, I'm on the fence over this tidbit until I actually hear it.
For as much as some people claim to hate what Star Wars has become, they sure seem incapable of shutting up about it.

Have you heard the soundtrack for the anime? Having Trent do the score for the movie would almost make sense.

As much as NIN has been hit and miss with his more recent work, I have a feeling that he is a anime nut, and will try to honor the original. I'd say that, just like the chances of this actually being a good movie, we'll just have to wait and see. It's pretty much a coin-toss at this point.
