LOL! @ Sluggo...

I was wondering if my suggestion about lightcasting light sabers in ESB was doable.

Original casting no light.

How it may look like with light sabers casting light.

Thanks.

but does that really ADD anything to the movie? If anything i think it would detract from the mood and the darkness of the movie, apart from touching up of lightsabers blades the Luke vs Vader duel is as close to perfection as the saga gets.

For me other than the usual continutity errors and bloopers (seeing Daniels skin under c3po) Empire doesnt need that much changing.

Where it fails is with the puppets, The TaunTaun dying looks awful, the stop-motion there needs addressing as it isnt fluid.
Same with the minocs, they look like bits of cloth on wire.

The cloud city CGI needs looking at, as its computer game standard by modern terms. Im not sure if its possible to retexture map it.

I also agree some kind of scene showing how the ATATs got to the surface would be great. As for now they just appear. Surely they mustahve some kind of Transformer type element where n space the4y just look like cargo boxes. Probably too ambitious though.

ROTJ needs alot of love though (muppet dance sequences, rancor still looking stop motion-y, burps, bad ending with HORRIBLE music), keep the sarlak monster, it was a controversial change but i like dit, formally it was just a dodgy looking rubber hole in the ground.

I agree that Empire doesn't need that much changing, except for the minor bloopers (Cloud city Windows anyone?), now with AT-AT's it's been said that their revelation adds to the terror of the Empire's attack and showing them in their landing path (like the TF in TPM) only detracts from the revelation in the binoculars. The lighting of the lightsabers like someone posted in the EP IV thread with Obi-Wan I think would look great and reflect to Anakin-Dooku's fight visual style. That being said I think the AT-AT's should only get multiplied to see an army of walkers but not much else. I don't know how can the tauntaun can be improved (or if!)

Well that's the thing. If you want my humble opinion ESB is really as close to perfect movie we can get. The only problems I see are technical. We don't need to ADD anything. All this talk about adding shields and lines really makes me scratch my head... The only thing ESB really needs IMHO is maybe some technical work.

So its my contention is that a light source generates light and that is most apparent in the dark. So maybe digitally this technical inconsistency can be fixed.

Just to put in my two cents about the entire Hoth shield thing.

From both watching the movies and reading expanded universe materials I've come to the following conclusion.

First off, the Hoth shield is an energy shield, not a particle shield. The movie explicitly states this and EU material tells us that energy shields do NOT shield against physical attacks. Secondly, it is explicitly stated this shield is powerful enough to deflect ALL bombardment. This means that the entire imperial fleet, including the Executor, could fire its entire volley of turbolasers at the shield for months on end with little to no effect. This is why they never did anything except send in ground forces.

Now, while this isn't explicitly stated, if we assume that most every engine in the star wars universe is something akin to an ion engine (which in some EU material most every engine is called an ion engine) and not a chemical rocket, this means that passing through an energy shield would not be possible by any sort of ship, shuttle, or flying vehicle. Since they propell themselves on a very high-yield energy stream I imagine this would cause some sort of disruption in the engine system since suddenly the entire engine's thrust finds itself being redirected by an extremely powerful counterbalancing force. This would most likely cause such an engine, and possibly via chain reaction its primary generator, to explode. This means that you cannot FLY through a shield. Though, it is entirely possible that with some crafty maneuvering (shut down all power and DROP inside, then re-engage engines) you could maybe manage such a feat, doing that during planatery entry would be akin to suicide.

Now, as Vader commanded, a strike force was landed outside of the energy shield. Notice how during the footage of those attacks, none of the empire's vehicles were repulsorlift vehicles? All were types of walkers; Probe droids, while present in some game renditions of the battle of Hoth, were NOT in the movies. The rebels however, obviously well inside the shield, could have repulsorlift speeders and send craft out, since they controlled it and were already inside. Furthermore as seen in the battle of Naboo, laser blasts are not inhibited once inside the shield. It's a thick protective anti-energy layer, but once inside it does you no good. So it's very possible for an AT-AT to get inside then blow the generator to bits when a star destroyer could do nothing from the outside.

I've always thought that the Rancor scene was wonderfully executed, except for the matte lines, which still weren't fixed in the SE.

Noooooooo. Give me the original. The SE looked like the Audrey II from Little Shop of Horrors - it actually made it less menacing to me. I like the mystery of not knowing what lies below the surface rather than the 'beak'.

I dunno if this has been mentioned, but there are many great opourtunites to use the original score.

One such I think is the extended "Rebel Fleet and Finale." It fits over the sequence, they just choose NOT to use it. (Make sure you use the correct, extended edition one).

What might also be interesting is having an alternate score track to the film... so much of the score isn't used or is only partially used or alternates are used... that it would be cool to see the film as it was intended.

One thing I want to recommend off the bat... the tracked fanfare of Han riding his taun taun into Echo base after Luke is attacked should be replaced with something else.

Not neccesarily the original music... as I can see why it's not used... but something else.

I also think that the opening to "Imperial Walkers" should be Re-inserted... and perhaps even replace the tracked music for the opening of "Snowspeeders take flight" with the original music.

If you want to see what some of the scenes look like with the original music, check out my vids:

Probe Droid Alt

Wampa Ice Lair -etc

Probe Droid

Yoda

EDIT: It might also be worth moving around some sequences... like... between Han and Leia arguing about Chewie needing a good kiss to then 3PO and R2 talking about flooding the princess's chambers... you could insert some of Luke into there I think... just an idea. I tried keeping up with this thread but it got away from me so I apologize if I'm too late or beating a dead horse.

I also volunteer to rebuild any sfx/music mixes you want. I have tons of Star Wars sfx... and I'm the music guru lol can even output in 5.1 for you :-p

While we're on the topic of music, I just wanted to throw the suggestion out there to perhaps consider using the "Binary Sunset (Alternate )" archival bonus track from the 2-disc soundtrack. It's an amazing piece of music that I wish had made it somewhere into at least one of the films.

Re Goodmusician's suggestions, I watched the first two videos you linked; for some reason the third and fourth ones wouldn't play. Here's my 2c (as a musician and a huge fan of this film in particular):

The Probe Droid cue should definitely be fully reinstated, but I agree with the cuts originally made once Han is inside the base and the dialogue begins; the one part of that cue I would add would be when Han has his hand on 3PO's mouth and a part of the main theme plays.

With the second video, I didn't notice much difference, but where I did, I preferred the official cues and cuts. I'm undecided as to the music for the snowspeeder sequence at the end, but I think I prefer the tracked music used in the official cut — it's more suspenseful and purposeful than the original cue.

Re the alternative Binary Sunset cue, I like it (although I prefer the iconic original), but I have no idea where it could or should be inserted, in Empire or elsewhere.

I was just showing the videos to give people an idea of what was available.

As far as the cuts in that one video you said you were unsure of... the music fades out pretty much after Luke falls out of the Wampa Ice Lair... most of the rest of that cue is completely unused. It remains unused until Chewie leans his head against the railing after the doors have shut and it double iris' out to Luke in the snow... the rest of that is pretty much there although I raised it in the mix. Then you have the unused intro and ending to Snow speeders.

I love the original Probe Droid... but some people really don't...

As for how to end it so that you can have the silence inside Echo Base up until Han says "well so long princess." and she runs after him, I'm not sure what you could insert... but I'm certain there's something...

Yep, I remember that now. I completely agreed with cutting the music inside Echo Base in the closing-the-doors scene. With Snowspeeders, I'd be entirely in favour of leaving the official cut except I prefer not to use tracked music. Probe Droid, I think, needs to be reinstated. Re your last statement, I don't want to insert anything, I'd just fade or cut out the music at an appropriate point once Han is inside the base, and cue it back in as done in the original.

I didn't like the first part of the Probe Droid ALT either. It's just too loud and you really cant hear the sound FX very good. The origional fits alot better, it sets a better darker mood.

Here's an idea -- maybe you can show these 'dropships' launching from an Imperial Star Destroyer. Filiming new scenes or completely using new CGI to create a scene on Hoth would probably be too hard.

Speaking of drop-ships, I've always been curious about the ship Captian Needa takes to report to Vader. It drops out of the bay and makes a nosedive to Vader's star destroyer. I wouldn't mind the transport replaced with something more familiar. I don't know what is in the film now.

I agree that Needa's ship should be replaced. What's there almost looks like a TIE Bomber. This would be the perfect place for an Imperial Shuttle.

It's known as the TIE Shuttle, and was originally built for ANH. I agree though that replacing the TIE Shuttle/Boarding Craft with a Lambda-Class shuttle would be a big improvement.

And I also wouldn't mind seeing a rather faint bit of a mouth or teeth or something of the space slug as the Falcon flies into the asteroid cave. And when we have the pov shot of the teeth closing as the falcon approaches, it might be interesting to see a bit of movement beyond the teeth, like maybe the end of the cave approaching as the space slug wiggles its way out.

The shot of the Falcon esacping the slug always looked too easy for me. The trajectory of the ship looks off to me.

Trust me. I know slugs.

But WHY?
Seriously, you all complain about George adding unnecessary things just because he CAN. Now you want to add scenes that have no use?
I mean Vader says it all doesn't he? "Prepare for ground assault", "land your troops outside the shield", ... why would you need to see any of that? There's no purpose! It would also destroy the slow reveal of the walkers, one of the most awesome Star Wars moments, which should not be touched imho.

Please just fix the things that need to be fixed, don't go adding in things just because you think it'd be fun to see.

It is really interesting to hear people say things like this all the time. Star Wars Revisited was a huge hit, but a TON of things where changed in that that really did not need to be changed. Many of the edits in that seemed like changes that were just fun to see. That is what I liked about it. I have seen Darth and Obi-Wan fight each other like old men time and time again, it was fun to see them fighting at a faster pace. I might be wrong but that, and many of the other changes in Star Wars Revisited seemed like they were just things that were fun to see. The thing I liked about Star Wars Revisited is that it is fun to watch because of these things. I liked seeing the mass of Tie Fighters joining in at the battle of Yavin, but surely they were not ncessary.

For those that don't want the "just for fun" changes or don't want to see the OT "modified", then you do realize that you still have the 2004 Georgie versions and the GOUT, right? There are other de special editioned version of the 04 DVDs out there, as well as version that correct the "deliberate creative decisions". Why not go after those and not sweat about whatever Ady wants to do with his?
