Agreed.

If done right, a live action version of Akira would be brillant.
Basing it on the origonal Manga is definatly a plus point but what's with this New Manhatten crap.
Set it in Neo Tokyo like it's meant to be.

I'll reserve judgement for now but like they always say:

"I've got a bad feeling about this."

Why make a live version of a movie that's already spectacular as animation?

Chances are that this will suck tremendously.

They've been trying to do a live-action version of this for many years now. I think it could be spectacular with todays CGI. As to why do it in live-action: because live-action has a totally different look, feel and effect than animation. If it sucks then the original will still be the original, but theres a lot of potential for greatness here that it worth a stab at it. And personally, I always felt Akira was kind of overrated anyway--cool animation and concepts, but the writing was nothing great, and it wasn't really as original as people think it was anyway.

This is awesome. I haven't been this excited for a movie since episode 3. They better not fuck this up.

Of course they will. They fuck up everything. What makes Akira different? The locations will be changed, the story will be modified. It will be less confusing for the average moviegoer and it'll be nothing like the original.

I'll be very surprised if they don't fuck it up.

Hollywood has ruined (before sometimes going back and fixing) just about everything they've touched. They modify it and tweak it so it's acceptable to "general" audiences. So look forward to Akira being heavily tweaked in order to bring it down to the average moviegoer.

If you want an action and FX fest, Akira will be a great movie. If you want any of the story from the original, it's going to suck.

Negative Nacy has a point there. What have you to say about this, Positive Polly?

I can't really say much yet maybe if they have someone who is a fan of the Anime or comic in charge perhaps things will be better. The Matrix is inspired by Akira so perhaps the Wachowski brothers would be good for the job.

The Matrix was inspired by many things. The Wachowski brothers are huge comic book fans. The Neo "taking off" scene at the end was an easy reference to Superman for instance.

I think enough people hated Matrix 2 and 3 (I was not one) that putting them on Akira may be a death knell for it. The people who actually like Matrix 2 and 3 are in the minority.

The best bet would be to put people in charge that are fans of the original manga (not the Wachowski's) and then not interfere. I'm sure they can find plenty of people that are fans of the originals.

I have the exact same sentiments, but that's all the more reason why I would not look forward to a live action Akira.

By that reasoning they should have asked me to write and direct the prequels, haha.

Lucas should have put the fans in charge of the prequels. At least then we'd get movies that made sense in context of the existing OT. Instead what we got is a series of movies that is wedged in with modifications made to the OT to make it work with the PT.

Leonardo Dicaprio is rumored to be attached to this.

I guess he kind of looks like a young asian kid....

I'm going to be a Realistic Regina and agree with lordjedi on this one. This movie is going to bite, and it's going to bite hard.

And on that note, I think I'm going to saunter over to my entertainment center and watch Akira again before mainstream society barges into my memories and has their non-lubricated way with them.
For as much as some people claim to hate what Star Wars has become, they sure seem incapable of shutting up about it.

Supposedly, he's producer.

That's what I read, but the real rumor is that he may be stepping into one of the roles. This has to be close to the top of the list of movies that do not need to be redone. Not that I don't think it could be an amazing movie, it just won't be unless some seriously good people are involved, and unless a studio throws tons of money at them and says "do whatever it takes to make this right". Not likely. I'll keep one finger crossed.

Yes! This is shaping up to be a pretty decent little cast of characters. Do we have anyothers? I think I shall be Cautious Carl and not say anything about this film. I have never seen the original anime (or any other anime film for that matter), seems like a lot of people have though. Perhaps I should consider the possibility of maybe considering giving this a rent sometime. The question is, is it that good of a film that somebody who is not into anime (it is not that I have anything against anime, it has just never struck me as anything interesting. Most of what I have seen on TV while channel surfing has always seemed pretty teeny bopper) might enjoy it? Anime like this are considered mature films for adults in Japan, right? (I don't mean "mature" or "adult" in the pornographic sense, but in the sense that it might not be odd to see people over the age of 25 buying tickets to see it) Perhaps I should broaden my horizons and watch a few of these kinds of films.

I've seen it no less than 3 times. I also own the DVD that was released a few years back. It's really good once you figure it out. It took me a couple of viewings to figure out everything that was going on. I don't know a lot of people that "got it" on the first viewing. And that's why I think it's going to get changed, A LOT, for a live action movie. People need to "get it" on the first viewing, otherwise "it sucks!" So I'm sure any ambiguous or weird ass plot points will be spelled out to us or just removed. Hollywood has very little room for "I didn't get it".

I've only watched the movie once. I thought the ending was pretty obvious, but I have since had to explain it a few times so I guess not.

Well, I don't mean just the ending. I mean everything throughout. The "old" kids for one. It's not obvious, at least to me, what/who they are on the first viewing.

The ending is pretty obvious, but it's one of the only obvious things in the movie. Of course, like you said, you've had to explain it a few times. Those are the people this movie is going to target.

I'll be Informative Ike for a moment and break down anime for you.

It sucks.

There's some good stuff out there, yes, and even some stuff that is bad, but is bad on purpose, so is good (Ping Pong Club springs to mind). But most of it is pure crap. If you want good anime, look to Akira, Ghost in the Shell (the movie, the series just isn't working for me), Grave of the Fireflies, The Wings of Honneamise and things like that. The trick is to watch good anime as a good movie, not as anime. That's the thing, good movies are good movies regardless of where they are from or how they are presented.

I thought the senile children were old test subjects that were unable (or unwilling) to achieve the same ascension process (towards ultimate evolution) that Tetsuo (and Akira before him) had achieved. At the time I didn't quite understand why the maker of Akira wanted an ass like Tetsuo to become the creator of a new, big-banged reality, but I'd now guess that he was trying to comment that only someone as immature as Tetsuo would want to become "God." If so, I'd guess he has a view of evolution that defines it as the ambition of an insecure mind.
