Every year for my birthday I throw a movie marathon. This year it's mostly composed of fan edits. If you're going to be in San Diego this coming Saturday, Feb 23rd, you're welcome to show up. The Marathon goes from noon to after midnight, on a top of the line theatre system. Here's the schedule:

The marathon went relatively well. Out of the fan edits, Blankfist's Spiderman was the big hit. Even at 4 hours, everyone felt with moved along at a good pace. The moments that were uneven were the dark scenes in the first film. Even with major adjustments to the projectors settings, the dark areas were too black. Things were back to normal when we got to the second film. People were impressed with the blending of the second and third movies together. We all felt moving Sandman's origin up earlier improved the pace of the last third of the film. And everyone except one comic fan liked the use of the ending. He thought it should have ended at the funeral, but the rest of us agreed that having Peter and MJ get together was very necessary, and the ending from the second film was the best way to do it. There were only three things that gave away that this was a fan edit to us: First the scene were Peter and Aunt May are told that Sandman broke out of prison "two days ago," when it was obviously a lot longer ago in this edit. Second the scene where Peter dances with Gwen felt hacked. Third, the transitions between movies could have used a "2 years later" title card, or something. But these are minor things. So I'm happy to report that, at least according to the people at this showing, this was another solid edit by Blankfist. (on a side note, one attendee really wanted to watch Blankfist's Star Wars: Fall of the Republic, so I let him borrow the DVD. He went home after Spiderman, watched it, and came back later that night having been thoroughly entertained. He said it felt like a new, genuine Star Wars movie, and had no criticism.)

Derren Brown's The Heist was a big hit. But I won't relate the reviews, since it was not a fan edit.

I was originally going to play FanFiltration's Dune, but the dark scenes were too dark on our projector, and so I made the decision to pop in ADM's Dune instead. I'm sorry to report that most people, including myself, were disappointed. There were definitely some intriguing moments, especially almost any scene with a Harkonnen or Gesserit. But most of the movie just didn't seem to stand the test of time. A lot of the acting was wooden and cliche'd. The sets were not grand enough, and the photography was uninspired. And the lower quality scenes didn't seem to add any interesting moments for most of us. Though the two viewers who had seen the original film agreed that this edit was an improvement. The only person who truly enjoyed this show was one who had read the original novel, so that may be a prerequisite. The rest of us were at times lost, and more often bored. There might be a more enjoyable (at least to non-dune fans) 90 minute version waiting to be made out there. But the editor would have to be both brutal and thoughtful at the same time. Maybe such a short version wouldn't make much sense, but I think there are worthy scenes in this movie. It's too bad we have to wade through so much blandness to see them. I will give FF's Dune a chance though, once I recover.

The three hours of Dune took a lot out of people, and most left before the other shows started. Those that saw Darkest City enjoyed it, and agreed it was better than the theatrical version, although one person who had thought he had previously seen the directors cut was not as thrilled. It turns out he had not seen the directors cut, since it doesn't appear to be out yet.

Nightmare before Lateralus started off great. The first 15 minutes or so are a lot of fun. After that the syncing is less noticable, and the general consensus was this would be better enjoyed on psychedelics, which all of us stopped partaking of in our 20's. But we all agreed this would be great background for a party. It looked and sounded great. But it was late and people were getting antsy, so I pulled the plug after Christmastown and went straight to the midnight shows.

Cremaster 4's audio was out of sync, which was noticeable about 5 minutes in, just when things were getting creepy. Crap. Need to find a better copy for next years show.

TCM: An Experiment in Fear received mix reviews. At this point there were five of us watching. One guy was seriously scared. His girlfriend and I were not. Neither of us had seen the original TCM, and maybe the fact that we weren't given any time to relate to the victims kept us from feeling the fear that they felt. But the editing was good. And the biggest horror fan there pretty much loved it. So in that respect, I'd say it was a success. If the house had been packed with more horror fans, I could see this getting rave reviews. My wife enjoyed it, and it was from her recommendation that I decided to show it. All in all, it was a good movie to cap the night off with.

So that was my night. Next year I'll probably stick to shorter films. Anything over 2 hours takes its toll on your eyes and ass, and affects your enthusiasm for later films. I do wish I had shown T-Hope's Terminator 3 instead of Dune. That was my original intention. It would have been a hit, and might have kept more people around for the rest of the show. Oh well. It's on the list for next year. I can't wait to see what edits to come will fill up the rest of that list!

Happy belated birthday Taolar.

Thanks for the invite, that was very generous of you. I for one really wish I would have been a little bit closer to San Diego over the weekend. That is really cool that you do that every year. Glad it was a success. I have never even heard of half of those edits, maybe I will have to check them out.

Thanks for sharing with us. I am still looking forward to the Son of Jorel edit, good luck with that.

Nonsense! When it comes to fan edits, the ones that take the longest often exhibit the most care and quality. Real life comes first. Fan edits are just a hobby, we all know that.
