If the shield generator was outside the area the shield was protecting, why didn't the bad guys just bomb it from outer space? Doesn't hold water.

The impression I always got was that the shield was like a flat surface above the base; it protected the base from an aerial bombardment but it was possible to sneak under the edges at near-ground-level (ie. with walkers or speeders).

good point about the shield generator, although the walkers were able to destroy it fairly quickly, and they had to destroy the shield so Vader and his troops could enter the base.

but surely the Rebel groundforce with their turrent cannons etc were also outside of the protection of the shields?

Why? I thought everything the Rebels had was inside the shield. If it wasn't, the Empire could have bombarded those areas from orbit and wiped out their defenses before landing to make the ground force's job easier. The shield generator is obviously UNDER the shield, but that doesn't mean it isn't easy to destroy once the walkers are within range of it.
