I think it would be possible to see the Star Destroyers dropping large transports of some kind without ruining the reveal of the AT-ATs. Not saying it should be done, just saying it's possible to show something without showing the main attraction.

An interesting idea popped up earlier in the thread about seeing drop ships deploying the AT-AT's. But i feel that adding anything like that in would ruin the reveal of the AT-AT's when we see them through the macrobinoulars and would just be adding something in to the film that really doesn't need to be there. That's the thing i'm trying to avoid and that's the thing that Lucasfilm did with the SE's.

That's what I meant, with the dropship comment, just a brief exterior space shot of large-ships carrying the ground forces , exiting from beneath a star destroyer (similiar to the way the Imperial Probe droids are launced at the start of the film) and heading towards the planet below, certainly no need to reveal the AT-AT's inside the ships, just as long as they look big enough to transport a few walkers.
I really like the way your Death star reveal in STARWARS Revisitied gave a real sense of scale to all the dfferent ships, and I think a scene like this could really complement that scene. It doesn't necessarily add anything to the story but it's a nice piece of eye-candy for us geeks to salivate over.
as far as the shields go I'm pretty sure they don't extend far beyond the perimeter of the base itself. I assume the Shield Generator is actually located seperate to the base itself that's why Veers Walker needs to destroy it so Vader and his troops can get inside the base.
