Is there any way your roommate can get that PS2 repaired? If not, just fill the first slot with EZ-putty and never use it again. In fact, I don't think I'd trust either slot in that machine ever again to save my data - especially with a FF game. If the exact same thing happened with two different memory cards, either the guy you bought them from is knowingly selling you defective cards, or more likely the card reader interface on the playstation is defective and it's damaging your cards. Are you sure they don't sell PS2 memory cards in the stores anymore? You could buy one and do the old switcheroo...
