Funnily enough, both formats were nearly relegated to the niche format dustbin. If Warner had not gone exclusive, another year would have gone by with no winning format. If that had happened, we'd be stuck with DVD for years to come because no one would be buying into either one. Just look at minidisc, SACD, and plenty of other "superior" formats that failed to take off, even with no other competing formats.
