Official: 'THE CLONE WARS' movie in Theaters 8/15/08 — Page 3

I won't be seeing this in the theater. I am still waiting for a complete series boxset complete with Adywan type enhances!

I don't mind if it gets a cinema release as long as the tv series doesnt start proper at episode 5* - making the theater experience mandatory.

* Assuming the movie is in fact episodes 1 - 4 strung together.

Although it reeks of money grabbing it will probably open the show up to a wider audience. It's going to be interesting no matter what.

At Sunday.

The reason why people bitch and moan here ocassionally (not day in day out) about the PT and SE is because with the constant spin-offs Lucas is creating based on a movie that came out in 1977 he is getting further and further away from the original movies and this interfers with our hope of and a chance of seeing a restored release of the OOT.

We would have seen such a release years ago if it wasn't for all the cash Lucas was raking in from the new trilogy and its tie-ins.

Beside that's pretty much the point of these boards. To discredit the SE and promote the OOT. If/when the OOT is restored and released on dvd/whatever new media format this place will likely become a ghost town.

And it's not like the conversation isn't some what intelligent. You can have more PT is teh sux0r11!!! type stuff if you want and see what you prefer.

I don't mind the cartoon series, I also think it's the best of the prequels. Tartakovsky did a good job. I like his animation style. With the limited time frame he had to work with it was hard to explore character but they still managed to. What I don't like about the series is it's set in the PT world as seen in the movies. Anakin is still a punk kid, grevious is still lame (but not as lame), the force is way over the top.... *ramble ramble ramble*

And as flashy looking as the CG animated series looks its still going to have these same problems in my view.

In regards to that video that I linked to, it mentions that George wanted to show us the good Anakin the friend of Kenobi..... Lucas had 3 movies and a 2 hour cartoon series, when will enough be enough?

That sums it up perfectly.

And for the record, I have nothing against the Clone Wars. Am I pissed that the original films they stem from haven't been restored and released properly? Hell yes. Would I be more interested in seeing a Clone Wars movie if I wasn't so bitter over the treatment of the OOT? Perhaps, but probably not.

It's the OOT that I've always cared for most- even before the whole OOT vs SE disaster. I really never got into the EU, I've only read a couple of EU books, so the ancillary stuff has never really been of much interest to me.

Is there anything really interesting about this, since it is in a sense another prequel where we know what happens in the end? The one hook Lucas had on the fans with the PT was how Darth Vader came to be, that was what sold the PT, and made many fans who hated Episode I & II go back for Episode III. Sorry George, not interested.

I concur. I'd be much more interested in the live-action TV series (set between ROTS and SW) as a movie, but of course that's still in pre-production. Of course, if the theatrical release of the animated series is successful, then I suppose a theatrical premiere of that series is more likely.

I'm not sure Harrison Ford wouldn't come back to do voice-overs for a post-ROTJ series. He's doing Indy IV (I refuse to say its lame name), isn't he?

Yeah, but as somebody here said some time ago, Ford seems to look at Star Wars like some bad porno he did in the 70s before he was famous.

War does not make one great.

why is it money grabbing? The cartoons were a blast... I've heard very little negative reaction to them... I have heard tons of times about how people wish GL would let someone else write... well, here ya go.... it's a cartoon, have fun...

This whole idea of "tarnishing" the originals is crazy....

I actually agree that this wont tarnish the Originals, the same way EU books haven't either. The Clone Wars Cartoons are not going to draw the 'casual' SW fan the same way the PT did, so you aren't going to have that mass response to people waiting in line, so in turn, you won't get that big news story, "ANOTHER SW MOVIE, see they are waiting in line again....."

I have talked to my diehard SW friends, and not one friend is interesting in going in August, as they said they will probably catch a couple of episode on TV, just like many new things on TV just to see how it looks. These were the guys who were there opening weekend for EVERY PT movie no matter what they thought of the previous one.

I asked my casual SW friends, and they were like "Clone huh?" These were the guys who all went to TPM, skipped AOTC, and then some went to ROTS to see how Darth Vader came to be.

It is funny cause TPM made the most money, ROTS made the second most, and AOTC made the least, and that is exactly what order my casual SW friends went to see it.

Don't worry guys, this will appeal to the SW diehards, but won't affect the OOT one bit, so I have no angst towards how this does.

I don't think the Clone Wars "tarnish" the OT either, but the prequels surely did.

As far as Harrison Ford goes, he might agree to do voice-overs if they offered him enough $$$. I mean, he did a Mercedes commercial in Japan for a free car.

Speaking of Harrison Ford/Indiana Jones- did anyone see Good Morning America this morning? I missed it.

I DVR'd it, and it did give me goosebumps. The trailer does have a really funny moment with Ford, but I won't spoil it for those who havent seen it. The trailer starts, "Lucasfilm LTD." and you get alittle goosebumps, then you see Indy's hat, and the blood starts pumping, and then the John Williams music cues.......you feel like a kid again.

They had a segment on E.T. as well, but they didn't show the entire trailer, just snippets of it. Are you talking about the bit in the truck?

I bet it's Shia LaBeouf giving a lot of people goosebumps. *snicker* I sure can't say his name and keep a straight face.

Saw the name Roswell on a box in that trailer. Brings back the notion that space aliens are going to somehow have a part in this story. *frown*

Anyhow, I did like the trailer so I'll pay $9 to go see it.

Yes, and just this 5 second scene confirms why Indy fans will enjoy this movie, and why the didn't like the PT: INDY IS STILL IN IT!!! The PT didn't have those lovable characters in it, so if you didn't care for them, how could you like the movies? With Indy IV, I am not saying it will be Raiders-quality, I am not even saying it is going to be a great movie, but its got Ford, his hat, the whip, the music, and it will have that humor in it, so nobody will hate it like they did with the PT, cause you will have someone to root for the whole time.

I don't see Lucas severing all ties with 20th Century Fox, or at least I hope not since that would put our chances of seeing a restored OOT anytime soon even further out of the realm of possibility.... unless criterion came up with a shitload of money to dumptruck on Lucas' driveway.

Also, that video footage from C4 was in 2.35:1. Is that what they're actually composing it in?

I think the majority of people will probably feel like they have no inclination to pay to see something in a theater that they can watch for free on TV, that's all. I don't really think that it runs much deeper than that.

Wait... the movie is a lead-in to the TV show, right?

In my opinion this looks like absolute shit. I'm not a fan of the art design at all, I think it looks atrocious. And why the clone wars, AGAIN ? I already thought the clone wars were boring and uninteresting in the way they were portrayed in the prequels and whatnot...

Oh, is it? Now I'm confused....

As for the Indy 4 trailer, I must say, the trailer did make it look cool. If still a little shaky on the move itself, but they way it's presented is really cool.

"Damn, I thought that was closer!"
"Part time!"
Good stuff.

I kept waiting for an "I'm getting too old for this" line...

Finally, someone friggin gets it! I've been saying this all along--it's got Ford as Indy...how bad can it be? People have been bitching about it being as bad as the PT, but the primary problem with the PT was the characters. So if we've got a new Indy movie, and Indy is still in it (With some returning characters) how bad can it really be?

Remember Highlander 2? Same lovable characters in it, but it was a stink bomb to most fans of the first film. Same thing with Robocop 2, Superman III and IV, Never Say Never Again, Poltergeist 2, Star Trek Insurrection and Nemesis. There are a number of films that have the same stars playing the "lovable characters", and they still stink to most moviegoers. I'm sure some people will think this new Indiana Jones movie will be the best of the lot, but how much money it brings in will be the real test.

It will bring in shitloads of money; I don't think that that's in any doubt. As for the characters being back, that may well be, but that hardly makes any difference if the film is badly made. I'd love to have faith in Spielberg and David Koepp, but the shadow of Lucas, his ego, and the PT looms large here. But we'll see. Really, wars in the Middle East. More important things to worry about.

Because I'm bored, I decided to look up some numbers on how well the Indy films have done, to see what the new film has to live up to. I've applied a basic formula:

Gross - Budget = Unadjusted Profit

I say "unadjusted" because there are undoubtedly other expenses (marketing, etc.) that come into the equation, but sometimes the information just isn't there. To make this applicable to the current time, I've also adjusted all numbers for inflation.

Raiders of the Lost Ark
Budget: $44,158,273.38
Gross: $588,462,276.46
Profit: $544,304,003.08

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
Budget: $56,833,333.33
Gross: $365,093,823.88
Profit: $308,260,490.55

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
Budget: $82,458,438.29
Gross: $338,718,316.60
Profit: $256,259,878.31

Stiff competition. I wonder if the downward profit trend will continue.
