Anybody know if there’s a 16x9 LD transfer of the old version of THX 1138 out there?

Rikter had a nonanamorphic (I think) LD preservation disc.

Yes, he did. It came with the original soundtrack and a custom cover. It was, of course, non-anamorphic.

Has anyone watched this particular release of THX-1138? 1995 Japanese LD

If this version has a superior picture to the one Rikter captured, I would be willing to buy this for a new capture.

I watched THX on TCM a couple of years ago, and I was totally pissed when I realised that it was the "special edition". I immediately sent an email off to TCM telling them that they need to put a disclaimer (or at least a correct date) on the listing for a film when it isn't the original version.

They really should do something like that.

"The following film has been altered from its theatrical release."

-or-

"This film has been formatted to fit the filmmakers "true vision". Some of the scenes may contain graphic CGI and pandering plot changes. Viewer discretion is advised."

What's really weird is the DVD extras make absolutely no mention of the changes at all. There aren't any special edition credits added to the movie either.

When Lucas talks in the documentary about how they made clever use of real locations in 1970, it plays over a CGI cityscape shot.

Where were you in '77?

That's because the original version of THX never existed....*waves pendant in front of eyes* ...when you wake up, you will have no memory of the original THX or Star Wars trilogy......

Does anybody know where to get the cover? I got a non-animorphic disc that looks like it was from a dvd recorder because of the lame menu. It also came with Lucas' student film. And how could you transfer a laserdisc with a dvd recorder? What about the side changes?

Take back the trilogy. Execute Order '77

I transfer LDs with a settop - just like capping TV.

Of course I go through and re-edit and re-author the disc afterward, but...
