I'm sure the details (if any) of eps. 7, 8 & 9 were fuzzy back then - especially knowing now that Lucas was pretty much making it all up as he went along....

But I guess Mark Hamill envisioned playing an older Luke, who perhaps dies and then reappears as the "ghost of" (Obi-Wan-style).

I had the interview on audiotape for many years (taped from a TV show, which is what I used to do before I got a VCR). I don't know if I still have it, though. If I can find it, I'll post the exact quote.
