I finally took a gander at the xvid. Adywan, your work on this edit is amazing. Congratulations on a job well done. I can't wait to show my friends what you've accomplished. I was especially tickled to see the hyperspace effect after the Falcon's escape from the Death Star because I first suggested that. At the time, it was only a suggestion about what I thought could be a cool fix to a continuity problem. I was prepared to not have it come to fruition because of technical limitations, and I was OK with that. The fact that you were giving the Special Edition the face lift that LucasFilm should have in '97 was enough for me. But when I saw it for real last evening, I was giddy because, well, it's like that is my contribution to your project. Seeing my username in the credits was icing on the cake! Thanx for going above and beyond. But enough about me...

The entire edit is a work of art. I love the tweaks, the fixes, the audio corrections, the cantina creatures, the DS schematics, the final battle, Chewie's medal, the lightsabers, and the new music edits. In short - I love it all! You have done an outstanding job, sir. I've got some ideas for ESB and ROTJ, but these will wait until such time as you're ready to begin. I now wait patiently for the NTSC DVD-9 to come my way for PIF purposes. I'll be happy to keep the chain going.

Best,

After finally finding a break in my schedule to watch this, I am literally blown away. What you've done with this edit is nothing short of fantastic. Never has the picture quality been so amazing, nevr has the images been so alive and sparkling with color. I'm also very happy that you undid many of the saturation problems with the 2004 DVDs (such as pink screens). I don't know if its my imagination or if you actually chnaged this but Darth Vader looks much cooler in your edit. In some scenes, his helmet is so awesomely shiny that it feels like watching ESB. The duel between Obi-Wan and Darth Vader made by jaw drop. That is one extrordinary editing job!! I don't understand how one person could do such an azaming job, but kudos to you for this! I could have sworn that you had sped up the duel, until I came on hear and read that you didn't. The only thing I'm not sure about is Obi-Wan ignatiting his saber first.

I also was especially impressed by the hyperspace effect in the Falcon, the new Death Star introduction, and especially the improvements to the battle of Yavin. Many people have expressed dislike for it, but I heavily disagree. It now feels more like a real battle, and not so small scale. Plus, when red group reports in you can hear pilots like red 7, red 9, or red 11. We never saw how they die, but this new edit helps explain it. Great work, and must have been very difficult I can imagine.

I'm also impressed with the sound. I don't know how you did it, but many of the characters voices sounds much less 70s and muffled. It really makes a the film a lot less dated. Well done! I'm unsure about Beru's voice though. It does sound more natural, like it's actually her speaking, but I can se why Lucas dubbed her: she just isn't that good an actress. I think she rushes through her lines with too little emotion inflicted. But everyone will feel different on this one, and I really am fine with the new voice since it has the plus of sounding more genuine.

Of course I don't agree with everything. The imperial march, if put into ANH, should be a bit more low-key and subtle instead of the fullblown ESB theme. And the scene in Ben's hut really didn't need to be altered (although it was pretty cool to get an alternate take). But these are minor concerns. You have really showed Lucas and his minions how it should be done. And you did by yourself. There are still things that I would like done, like change Vader's IMO oudated voice and score a new music for the Obi-Wan-Vader duel, but that is completely out of your control. It would require Jones to re-score his lines and for Williams to write a new piece.

Finally, I just want to say congratulations. You've made the best version of ANH there ever was.

The only picture quality issues I have are when the Death star explodes, Yavin seen next to it pixelates, I dunno if it's just my copy or what.

Just checked the XVID and it doesn't pixelate at all. But when checking the MPEG2, both DVD-5 & 9 versions it pixelates. I just tried a new encode of that shot and something horrible has happened. Anything i encode now looks like a pixealted mess. Bot Procoder & CCE have suddenly become useless at encoding anything of quality, even when using the same templates as the original encodes which looked great apart from the slight pixelation on yavin as the sparkles reach it. Now i've hit a brick wall as to what it can be. the only thing i installed since the last encodes was divx 6 creator. I've uninstalled this and the problems are still there. The main problem is that i cannot use the better quality mpeg because it was done before i made a few final tweaks and i haven't encoded the NTSC version yet. here's an example:
http://img526.imageshack.us/img526/4439/testbadtg1.jpg
The new encode was actually done with the DVD-9 setting because it is even worse with the DVD-5 settings, even though it is exactly the same template that was used in the top image. I can't reinstall my system because there are to many settings that i need to keep in order to finish this project and i can't reload them if i did. At this rate the only version that will ever be available is the XVID

I waited 11 years for a proper special edition, so if it takes another year to fix this, I'm willing to wait. Don't you just love it when you're at the end of a project, and one little thing buggers up all that you've done?

I'm guessing it's the latter...

Ady, I sincerely hope that whatever problems you are currently encountering get rectified soon, however I will echo the previous poster in saying that if we have to wait another year so be it. We've waited this long, and have the xvid to tide us over.

From the looks of the images you posted, there might be a quantizer problem. You might want to bump the maxQ rating down.

Ady......I had a very similar problem even though I using a different encoder....after I installed DivX6 the quality when down the drain.

I uninstalled DivX6 and the problem still existed.

I re-installed my previous xvid, ffdshow, and AC3 filter and everything went back to normal. Something the DivX 6 adds overwrites something that does not install because it is not part of Divx. I think the XVid re-install actually is what fixed it.....so it must be one of the codecs that Xvid and Divx Share is my guess.....any way....I hope this may help you if have not already figured it out.

There is no way of changing that in Procoder. It uses presets and i created my own so all i have to do is load it up and encode. I haven't changed any settings and it has only happened since installing DIVX 6

adywan: are you feeding the content via avisynth? I would definitely try reinstalling that.

Mind you, why don't you just try using Window's System Restore to a point before you installed the crappy Divx software.

Edit: Love the Alderann clip. JarJar must die! Adds emotional impact? I'm suddenly glad they blew up the planet.

I'm sitting here dying from the flu and while I didn't think it was possible to feel worse right now, that sentence certainly pushes me a step closer to the grave.

Keep positive thoughts, Ady, as I'm sure everything will work out for the best in time. You've persevered this long so don't give up now.

This kind of thing has happened to me before. It has to be a codec issue. I would installs different types, perhaps even older divx codec and see what happens. Worst comes to worst, perhaps someone can encode it for you.

Ady, He has a good point.....I forgot....I also had to re-install avi2dvd. It is my quick and dirty converter for DVD's when I just want to watch something quickly.....and it has avisynth and many other codecs included with it. So it may not have been my XVid re-install that actually fixed it.

After I installed Divx 6 avi2dvd started crashing as well and kept crashing after I uninstalled it. After I re-installed avi2dvd the other encoders would render fine and avi2dvd started working again.

Because i have not seen this yet, if anyone has the time, putting it on Rapidshare.
Something that would work with media player.
Also, this sounds corny but "I belive in you adywan, you can do it"!
