I love the philosophical references on the show and the general themes it touches on. It's my favorite part of the show actually. After that I enjoy the drama of the characters and what will happen to them (the characters are all really well written in general).

I even like how "the others" and Ben are written out. They're cool characters and have interesting motivations/histories. I wonder what kinds of things they know and I even care about them. My problem is only with how all of that then matches up with what I saw in season one and in the beginning of season two. If the writers were trying to trick me I think they went too far. I don't care if they borrow ideas from books, philosophers, or whatever to explain the show's earlier mystical events; I certainly don't need something original and brilliant, I just wanted something cool. Whether they chose ghosts, rifts in time-space, heaven/hell, or whatever, I don't care, I just wanted a neat explanation for the cool mysteries they had presented. Instead we're shown a group of people that would best fit into Mr. Rogers neighborhood. I'm now forced to pretend that these clumsy people were just whispering a little too loudly as they accompanied Sayid through the jungle. That seems silly to me. Even as incompetent and frail as the others are, I have trouble believing even they'd be stupid enough to sit around someone and whisper like that. I also have trouble believing that Sayid wouldn't have noticed all of the talking people behind the nearest bush. I guess I just would have liked a better explanation than what we got.

I am not sure it has ever tried to explian the whispers as having had anything to do with the others, unless I missed something. The whispers have always been more closely connected to the smoke monster than to the others. Don't forget about the smoke monster, Jacob, or the unaging Richard, I am confident there is still something cool to come with those things.

^ There is that as well...

and hence we get a stupid explanation for the otherworldly whispers that Sayid heard.

Did we get an explanation for the voices? I never heard it, no pun intended.

Not definitively. But it does not take alot to assume they are related to the smoke monster, since the whispers usually are heard before the smoke monster shows up in one of its manifestations.

Near the end of season two they tried to explain the weird whisperings as merely being the result of "the others." It was in the episode where Michael led the chosen group to be captured by the others. Just before everyone was hit with darts they all heard similar whispers in the surrounding jungle. Clearly it was the others trying to coordinate with each other before the trap was sprung. Therefore I thought that was obviously an explanation for what Sayid had heard. Needless to say, I have been hoping that explanation was merely a way to throw all of us viewers off of the otherworldly trail, but, as the show goes on and they keep trying to demystify everything, I'm starting to think that may have been the real explanation. It seems like the writers really want to go for a world where they first make my imagination go wild with impossible things only to then give me one boring explanation after another. I now worry that eventually the show will simply devolve into Gilligan with guns.

Hmm, I don't remember that, but I guess it was to throw us off. The whispers come about in a lot of places where we know that no others are around. Like the times Walt appeared Shanon as well as many other manifestations of smokey. Usually the whispers are backwards recordings or distorted in other ways. You can find sites on the internet where you can download sound clips of all the whispers and where people have listened to them at different speeds and by reversing them and they claim to be able to make out what is being said. They even have trascriptions for the whispers. I have listened to some but I can't make out a word, I think the people who transcribe them are hearing voices in their own heads. But regardless, if you look at the places where the whispers appear, there is a lot more too them than hiding others.

After 8 months I really don't think that will be enough to satisfy the masses. Hopefully more satisfying than season 3 where we got 6 lackluster episodes and then a 3 month hiatus.

Yeah, I know. After all this wait I keep feeling like eight episodes isn't even worth it. I was already disappointed the season was cut down to sixteen episodes. When they first announced that there were only 48 more episodes, I thought "Perfect, just two more seasons of 24 eps each, that seems about right" then I read that the 48 remaining eps would be spread over three seasons of sixteen eps each, and I was kind of disapointed, and now the already meager sixteen episodes has been cut down to just eight.

Yeah, We can't blame this one entirely on the WGA I guess I'll just take it as it comes, and be glad to get anything at all.

Hopefully the Walt character won't be important to the the story when it finally continues. He'll probably be 27 by the time the strike ends.

Well, tonight was the night. Did anybody else watch this? It wasn't the most exciting episode, but it did a good job setting up the story for season 4. It certianly didn't top the openers of seasons 2 or 3. Well, one down, seven more to go. Next weeks episode is titled "Confirmed Dead".

Sorta SPOILER below---------------

One of the dumbest things about this episode was where Naomi turns up missing and is bleeding all over the place. Locke just nailed her in the back with a knife and nobody bothers to check her pulse, just assuming she was dead. For some reason she doesn't catch onto to the fact that it was a renegade that tried to kill her, and so she decides she has to escape from them for her own safety and cover her tracks so they can't follow her. So she manages to walk a good ways splirting blood onto every leaf and tree, then double back and walk another long ways, then manages to climb a tree when she hears Kate coming, and still has the strength to tackle her. Only then, after having left her on the ground to die without even taking the time to check her pulse as they all celebrate the fact that they are going to be saved, does Kate offer to help patch up her wounds. Then Naomi talks on the phone for a couple of minutes and promptly dies. Getting kind of tired of this new trend of people conveniently coming back to life. Makes me feel like Echo, Boone, Anna Lucia, or Libby are going to come running out of the woods at any moment and catch up on old times.

Oh well, it is only the first episode so far. Maybe Naomi and Mikhail will stay dead these times around and the story will progress.

I missed seasons 1-3, but caught the recap and this new season premiere... this show might not be so bad after all.

==================SPOILER=====================

Did anyone get what was going on with Hugo? Was it the future, how he was thinking about things in his head, or what could happen? That confused me a little.

Yeah, having not caught season one - three certianly isn't going to help understand anything. The recap is FAR from sufficient. Had you seen the others you would have understood everything that went on last night. Also having started this late in the game really ruins the first episodes.

"this show might not be so bad after all"

What gave you the impression it wasn't a good show? It has been fantastic from the beginning, it has only been in season three that it has started to grow a bit weak. Season two are some of the best television episodes in history IMHO. But that all depends on what you are into, I fo rone hate sitcom and haven't watch TV regularly since way back in the days of X-Files. Lost is the show that gave me something to look forward to on TV every week, but yeah, the last season wasn't near as good as season one or two. Anyway, if you enjoyed last nights episode (which like I said, wasn't that incredible of an episode) I really think you would like the rest of the show. Best way to see it is to borrow the DVDs off of a friend, if you don't have a friend with the DVDs the second best way to see them is on ABC.com. They currently have every episode from the pilot up to last nights in high quality (seriously, the quality is great) streaming video with limited 30 second commercials. But you have to have decent internet for this. Anyway, I highly recommend it. But in the meantime, yeah, Hurley's episode was in the future. Every episode up until the finale of last season takes place in the past. Last season's finale introduced us to the future, we still don't know how they get off, or what exactly happens, only that as Hurley told us that only six of them get off the island, but as the season unfold we will learn more and more. Hurley (on the island) was not imagining the things in the future, he doesn't know about them because they have not happend yet.

Seriously, watch the show, it is one of the few shows worth wasting your time on.

I'm not going to read or comment on any spoilers but last night's episode was a good one. There were a lot of people around where I was watching it and I had some trouble getting into what was happening, but it still moved me pretty well. I'm also happy about the whisperings again. Can't wait to see what happens next.

Last night's was on par with their better work. Definitely good, and I look forward to seeing where it goes from here. The party you're referring to, the whisperings, was very creepy. Well done. Now if only the WGA strike can get resolved quickly so they can get back into production, I'll be happy.

I liked this episode. It introduced a lot of new stuff as well as brought back some old stuff, like the voices and the airplane wreckage. It also seems like the future isn't so great for the "Oceanic 6" with people after them and secrets they can't tell.

Did anyone watch that show that came on after Lost? Eli something. There was an Oceanic Airlines commercial that came on near the end telling you to go to find815.com. It's a pretty fun series of puzzles that takes you through the events of a guy who's trying to find flight 815 after Oceanic officially ceases their search. He ends up on a ship scouring a trench for the wreckage of the Black Rock - the boat we know from the island with all the dynamite.

Even if that show didn't seem incredibly lame, after being tortured though an advertisment for it EVERY SINGLE commercial break, I wouldn't have dreamed of considering leaving my TV on for a second longer after the promo for next weeks ep was over. Anyway, you can simply see the Oceanic ad on youtube. You have got to love youtube.

Next weeks episode will tie in pretty closely (sort of) with the find815.com alternative reality game. I am looking forward to being able to discuss it then, but for now I will hold my tongue so as not to spoil the next ep.

On top of find815.com, another promotional thing ABC has been pushing are the Lost: Missing Pieces Mobisodes, which could be downloaded onto your cell phone or watched at abc.com. I was never really that interested in them but I watched them a few days ago. Anybody else see any of them? They are mostly just pointless added bits fitting into random spots within the Lost timeline (for example, one is a conversation Juliet has with Micheal during the time he got captured while he was searching for Walt. Another one is where Juliet has a conversation with Ben concerning Walt and his "disturbing" abilities).

Like I said, most of them were pointless and did not add anything to the story line. The one that stood out to me as amusing was the one where old Doc Artz (the amazing exploding dynamite man) explains what he was doing in Australia.

The one that stood out to me as really odd, a little lame, and probably having something to do with the events Hurley witnessed/imagined regarding Jacob's cabin, was the 13th mobisode where Jack's dad meets Vincint the dog wondering through the jungle and asks him to go wake his son up because he has a lot of work to do. The mobisode ends with the opening of the pilot. Taking the mobisode and rocking chair thing into account, it seems they are going to dive a bit deeper this season into the whole mystery of the missing body of the late Dr. Christen Sheperd. Tiptup, let's see 'em rationalize this one.

Heh, I didn't catch any of those ads for the show except for maybe the last couple seconds. I can't stand 5 minute commercial breaks so I started watching on my DVR about 20 minutes in.

Do you know this from reading all the spoiler news or is it just an educated guess?

I'm gonna have to go watch those mobisodes now. Some of that stuff sounds really cool, especially since I'm on a big Lost kick this week. I watched the entire 3rd season over the weekend.

I usually steer clear of spoilers, I just enjoy watching it a lot more than reading someones description of it. However, after all these months of waiting last nights episode just didn't quite do it for my wife, and she asked me if I could find a brief description of the next few episodes just to give her an idea of what the season would be like, and I ended up stumbling across a full episode description for next week. Since my wife was bend on reading it I decided I might as well read it also. So yeah, I spoiled the next episode for myself, though I am usually anti-spoiler.

Yeah, go watch the mobisodes. There are thirteen of them and they are only about 2 minutes each, so you don't have to dedicate a whole lot of time to them. Like I said, my favorite part was hearing Dr. Art's back story. They pretty much feel like deleted scenes, only they were all recorded recently. If you know where to look you can find all of them in avi format in one very practical little rar file. Alternatively abc.com has them, but you'll have to suffer through commercials there.

Also, it seems "The Envelope" is a deleted scene, based on its credits.
