When you think about what the words mean ... it's a pretty powerful title given where we left off. Very appropriate for this film, or what we know of it.

I like that it is another Fleming title. I would like to see the new series of Bond movies stick with Fleming's stuff, which is the way it is going so far.

I certianly don't see why it is the only way they can go. There is no reason they can't write original stories or even base them off of Bond books written by people other than Fleming. In fact once they finish Quantum of Solace, they will only have about one or two more original Fleming titles at their desposal that have not already been made into a film. As much as I would love to see them make a version of Live and Let Die or Dr. No that are more true to their source material (as much as Casino Royale was true to its source anyway), I just don't see them "remaking" any of the ones that have already been used for a film title. Every major Fleming book has had a film named after it so far, with Quantum Solace they grabbed the title from one of his shorter stories, which some of the old films did also.

Just looked up what original Fleming titles are remaining, we have two stories in "For Your Eyes Only" titled "Risico" and "The Hildebrand Rarity", and we have a story in "Octopussy" titled "Property of a Lady". None of those sound like movie quality titles. Perhaps Quantum of Solace is the last Bond movie to be blessed with an original Fleming title. Anyway, I had hoped they would disregard the previous films and go ahead and continue Casno Royale with an adaption of Live and Let Die, which was the original sequel to Casino Royale.

Don't forget the Fleming short story title "007 in New York" that only appeared in the U.S. editions of Fleming's travel book "Thrilling Cities".
But that is not a very good title for a movie.

I too wanted a serious hard hitting re-make of "Live and Let Die" with story elements closer to the ones Fleming used in his original novel.

Then a re-make of "Moonraker" would follow. The only re-make that they would not be able to do based on the original book story elements is "The Spy Who Loved Me".

That would have been great. A nice concise serious series of Bond movies all with the same actor that more closely follow the films. I like the old films, probably because I grew up watching them, but the books are a lot better than the films. As for "007 in New York", I had no idea it existed. That would be a really cool title for a Bond film, hope they use that title next.

"007 in New York"

Fleming originally wrote this very short story (it’s only eight pages) for The New York Herald Tribune in 1963 where it was first published as Agent 007 in New York. (Fleming’s original title was Reflections in a Carey Cadillac.) The story was later included in Fleming’s non-fictional work, Thrilling Cities, a travelogue collection of the author’s impressions of various cities around the world. The story was included in this book as a counterpoint to Fleming’s own harsh judgment of the city, and to alleviate fears that American readers would take offense. Fleming may not love New York, but James Bond does, so… Strangely enough, 007 in New York only appears in the U.S. edition of Thrilling Cities. The first UK publication of the short story wasn’t until 1999 when it was featured in a Sunday Times supplemental magazine tie-in with The World Is Not Enough. When Ian Fleming Publications reissued all the Fleming titles in 2002, 007 in New York was at last included as part of the official canon, appearing in the Octopussy collection.

Thanks for the info FF, that is really interesting. No wonder I had never come across it before. I didn't even know Fleming had written a travel book. The original title "Reflections in a Carey Cadillac" was a more impressive title, still not movie material though.

That reminds me, They could use the title "Mr. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" can't they? Not an original Fleming title, but yet it has connections to Bond lore of the past such as the titles "Licence to Kill" and "The Worlds Not Enough" had right? The title "Thrilling Cities" may be good as a title for a Bond film as well.

As fun as it would be to see them do some more book adaptations (even if they are remakes) I do like finally having a real James Bond sequel. It'll be cool having Quantum of Solace follow Casino Royale so closely, and it looks like they've got a great plot going. I also really like the title. It was weird at first, but very, very fitting for the film's plot. They're really getting everything right with this new series.

But the books were real sequels to one another. Live and Let Die follows Casino Royale, it refers back to events that took place in Casino Royale, it is a true sequel to Casino Royale. The movies are much more disconnected from one another than the books are. That is not to say that you can't pick up any James Bond book and enjoy it on its own without having read the book before it.

I don't think you can really judge a movie based on its *title* alone ... "Batman Begins" is a ridiculously terrible title, and it was the best Batman movie made so far.

well we'll see. But remember. Attack of the Clones has a bad title and it does suck. So sometimes you can judge a book by its cover.

Attack of the Clones was a crappy movie regardless of the title. That whole movie was a mess from its title onward, but its title was not the reason for its suckiness, just the beginning of it.

I like the title Quantum of Solace. It is a fitting title considering the plot of the film and all Bond has been through up to that point.

I've seen every Bond movie (including Never Say Never Again and the spoof version of Casino Royale), except that made for TV version of Casino Royale that was made in the '50s. I haven't read any of the books. From what I can tell, they very different from the movies.

The first four movies, OHMSS, For Your Eyes Only, Octopussy, Dalton's two, and Casino Royale hit very close to Ian Fleming's books both in terms of the nature of the character and the plots. The others are wild flights of fancy. Craig has brought back Ian Fleming's James Bond to the screen, and that's a VERY good thing.

Read the books. They're awesome fun without being overly high-minded. You'll especially love stuff like Moonraker, Live and Let Die, and You Only Live Twice and how the stories blow their celluloid counterparts out of the water.
