I dunno, Blu-Ray seems to be having tons of issues with the fact they are a uncomplete format. BD 1.1 and 2.0 and all that jive. I do know that the main feature will play irregardless of player, but if you want to see those great bonus features that require 20 more gigs of space, then you should hold out for a 2.0 player.*

*Now I await to be jumped on by Sony fanboys.

I guess you can label me a fanboy, but this is how the current market is.... Blu-ray is the heavy odds on favorite to win. After Warner's defection they now have 70% of studio support including Sony, Disney, Warner, and Fox. HD-DVD currently has Paramount and Universal. Over the last year BR has sold software at 2:1 ratio with HD-DVD. After the Warner announcement the ratio jumped up to 5:1(only one week of data available thus far). Toshiba's response was cutting their player prices once again... but it doesn't look like people are taking the bait.

The much ballyhooed profile mess from 1.0->1.1->2.0.... Supposedly all players even 1.0, will be able to play the movie itself. Those with 1.1 or higher will be able to see picture in picture commentaries. 2.0 adds web"enhancements" like be able to download ring tones or whatever. Its up to you if those extras are worth worrying about.

Even so the PS3 is 1.1 compatible right now and at CES they re-affirmed that'll they be able to update to 2.0 later this year via firmware update. So the PS3 is pretty much future proof. And like I said earlier it is one nice piece of hardware.

Just to flame proof this post I don't like any particular electronics corporation... they all suck in general ($ony, Micro$oft, To$hiba, etc). I first bought an HD-DVD add on for my 360 and it was pretty nice, but I sold it when I saw how the format war was becoming more and more heavily favored on the Blu-ray side. I buy things that I find will fit my needs.. I don't really think any emotional investment towards electronics equipment is particularly healthy.
