lol - I forgot there was a battle droid to find too! I havent found George yet - though I was looking for old George...

Ady - the flipper: initially I admit it 'threw me' as it looked really odd - but I think that is because I wasnt expecting it.
I've quickly flicked back a few frames though and it is pigfacedude pointing the blaster - which then ends up on the floor. Its obviously a fault with the original - they must have forgotten who was supposed to be shooting - but if you look at the sequence of events, it is the human who gives Luke some stick, then he throws Luke to the floor and brings out a blaster, Obi-Wan lights up and swings, and it is the human who falls back first. So really, it should be his arm on the floor I reckon!

I think maybe I'm getting too anal here, but I just got out the novelisation which reads "the man found himself lying prone against the bar, moaning and whimpering as he stared at the stump of an arm"

I'm afraid I think the only totally correct solution here would be somehow to have the humans arm down there. But even the gun on the floor doesnt match the one that was drawn. And frankly, I really dont think it matters. As you've pointed out, the flipper now matches what was seen earlier - and the cauterised stump makes far more sense.

All the advice I would offer is this - if it bothers YOU, change it. If not - leave it!

Finished downloading, and scanned the movie through a bit. One word: WOW!!! The duel really is better paced, and the music mix throughout the film is great. The holograms are excellent, really as they should be, and bring the movie closer technology-wise to the PT, without being to in-your-face changes. The battle droid is there, but hardly noticeable, just the head. I had to pause just to be sure. I'll probably spot George when I see the whole movie. Regarding the flipper - I does look a bit 'flat', but on the other side, he is an alien, and to me that shoot Is all about the light-saber wound, not the flipper-hand. It is the show the strength of the light-saber, the cleanness of the cut. I don't really care for the flipper shape.

I know you are probably very tired after this edit, but I was wondering, do you plan to start the Empire edit relatively soon? Maybe in a couple of months. Will you start a new thread, the same as for this edit? We already made some suggestions in one thread about ESB and ROTJ. After gathering a lot of experience in the process of making ANH Revisited, you can probably concentrate more on the content side of the upcoming edits and less on the technical side. I hope your 'tech' 3D team will keep on supporting you in the new edits. And off course, as there is less to correct/add/change in the ESB and ROTJ, and you are now an experienced editor, the editing process will be much shorter I suppose.

Less to 'correct' in ROTJ????? Why, all the Ewoks need replacing with Wookiees! Can't wait to see how he'll pull that off

Yeah, ady, get back into the workhouse you slacker! This edit took, what, 18 months? So the next one should take "only" a year.

/sarcasm

Still waiting for my torrent to finish...

OK, come on, you know that he cannot replace all the Ewoks with Wookies, that is just unrealistic thinking. I know this would make a more serious film, and I would have liked it, but it is just not going to happen. After we are done praising Adywan effort (which he rightly deserves), I expect a lot more ideas in the ESB and ROTJ suggestions thread

Ady, how long do you estimate let's say ESB edit will take you? If this edit took you 18 months, I'd expect the next one to take less than a year. 6 months maybe? But first you have to make some mental notes on what to change and correct, and you make decisions even during editing, so time will be an open parameter.

I was joking about the Wookiees......

More beautiful things about Ady's edit: the blue tints in the Falcon cockpit as they travel thru hyperspace, Chewie's medal, Vader's lights (thats one of my faves too - done so subtly: Lucas would have had them really really bright, shouting I'M NEW I'M NEW!), the bright blue inside 3POs escape pod has gone etc etc.

True genius Ady

Adywan, you my man, are the bomb. That was just ...."WOW"! Thank you thank you thank you. There were a few shots I think that you could have taken more advantage of, and personally I do miss the Jabba scene getting taken out, but overall you've got one heck of edit here. I'm looking forward to DVD version.

THANK YOU!

Well my download finally finished and just as well since I forgot to plug in the power on the laptop and had about 20 minutes left! I've done a quick scan through as I'll watch it a little later properly and have seen some of the major changes. So, the Ponda's arm on the floor...looks different and probably the only reason why it might look wrong is maybe to do with the way it's lit, but I'm cool with it. It is a change that Ady wanted to do and it matches a lot better than the wolfman's hand which didn't belong to either human or Ponda! The Ben-Vader fight does look a lot faster now but that's probably down to the tighter editing. I liked the new schematics - a nice blend of old and new and finally the Death Star's clock matches the time as read out!

I might add a better review once I've watched it properly. It's well worth the download time, either usenet or otherwise.

Good job Ady...I'll have some fun watching out for the changes and take some time off before you embark on the next two episodes. I reckon Empire will probably require less in the way of work and will hopefully be more cosmetic than the massive changes here, but the bar has been set now!

Well, I just finished downloading the torrent overnight and burned it this morning. I'll keep seeding the torrent until it hits a 5:1 ratio or until there's no more peers, whatever comes first.

Before I go pop this into my DVD player and enjoy the movie in its entirety, I just wanted to chime in on a few things.

First and formost, Ponda Baba's arm...
I just want to say I think the shot looks absolutely fantastic Ady! The lighting, the angle, and the texture all look incredible, and the shot looks just as I hoped it would; the whole thing looks totally natural to my eye. This is one of the fixes I was looking forward to most in this edit, and you pulled it off beautifully. I must disagree with those who think it looks out of place; if I were seeing this for the first time, I'd think that shot had always been there.

Furthermore, unlike Fuser said, the hand couldn’t be the human’s because the sleeve is that of Ponda Baba's jacket. Also, both Ponda Baba abd Dr. Evazan can be seen falling over before the camera cuts to the next shot, so I don't see any problem with regards to whose arm did or didn't get severed either.

Just to show how close you got this shot to my expectations, Ady, here's an image I posted awhile back about what I thought the shot might look like. The top image is the original, the next is my attempt, and the bottom is Ady's finished version.

http://img237.imageshack.us/img237/7348/pic10ajq0.jpg
http://img120.imageshack.us/img120/3795/adywansarmshotev1.jpg

As you can see, Ady got the shot even better than I could have hoped. So, in short... KEEP THE SHOT!

That being said, I'd really like to thank everyone in this forum for helping make this vid available so quickly. I was worried that I wouldn't get to see it for weeks or *gasp* months, not being familiar with usenet and all, so I was amazed to see everyone pitch in and help make this available to so many people in so many ways so quickly. Again, thank you; this community truly rocks.

One quick question before ending this post: Ady, will the DVD versions be anamorphic? The thought just occured to me as I realized the XviD is not.

Thanks again, Ady, for this... you've made many people very happy.

And by the way...

It should play fine in VLC, but if not try Perian for quicktime. Both work perfectly for me, but I'm still running Tiger not Leopard...

adywan, I'm not sure how you did the hand. It doens't look CG at all. I guess it's hand painted or something. I would suggest you create a 3d Model. Also, the lighting is wrong. If you look closely you will notice the source of the light comes from the left bottom corner. And there is a slight backlight comming from the opposite direction. If you like, I'll create the hand for you.

Dead Adywan,

I've just finished watching your masterpiece and I am just FLAWED by it. I actually had a tear in my eye in some scenes, but mostly because a film I have loved like no other since childhood (I'm 34) and watch regularly suddenly felt brand new and fresh again. I was on the edge of my seat (settee actually lol!) during the end battle. You invested it with a visual and kenetic energy which I didn't think possible. THIS is what the 1997 Special edition should have been. That TIE fighter attack just had my mouth hanging open - incredible stuff. The scale of the attack is just perfect now. And the Death Star about to fire before it explodes REALLY added to the feeling of tension. Words cannot do justice to the improvements you have made... and I'm one of the purests as well (or was!). As has already been said here loved he extra from the Radio drama of Luke yelling Biggs when he gets shot down - adds more emotion to the scene.

Other things I loved (in no particular order) was the different Aunt Beru voice, which is the one I remembered from way back. That bought a tear to my eye. (can't believe I just typed that hahaha!). Subtle little changed like R2 whistling while we are still looking at the outside of Kenobi's hut - brings the scene alive more. The asteroid debris really enhanced the scale of this scene and the added sound effects. The escape from Tatooine, the escape from the Death Star - both are now nail biting moments again with a genuine sense of urgency, as is the Kenobi/Vader lightsabre fight. Generally I am not a fan of incorporating music from other sequals into 'the original', but the Episode III music REALLY worked well hear, and seemed to fit the beats of the scene like a glove... again masterful editing...

Loved the introduction of the Death Star - it now looks bloody HUGE and forboding - just as it should have been. The extra music also works well to.

The lightsaber battle - what speed. Not sure how you managed this without repeating shots, but it looks like a totally different fight. Amazing work - yet again my gob was smacked

The hyperspace effect really worked well - seemed fitting the only time they have to grab a conversation is in hyperspace - that worked really well, and looked cool. Also loved the slight blue shade you gave to this scene to match what was going on outside the cockpit. Loved the new rebel briefing graphics - still looked retro, and kept the spirit of the original which I loved.

The entrance to Mos Eisley is now - again - exactly how it should have been. Visually impressive without any dumb ass slap stick. It now feels like the wretched hive of scum an dvillainy it always should have been. The creaures in the cantina, the subtle facial movements.... the Greedo changes.... again all done with a loving hand. It would have been so easy to do too much to the facial movements, but you have it spot on. A few blinks and snarls here and there - perfect: George Lucas TAKE NOTE Lol!!! Really loved the creature (sitting down to the left) sniffing as the stormtroopers walk past Han and Chewie. Adds character. Masterful.

I could go on and on, but I think the greatest compliment I can give is this will be the version I now watch in preference to all others... (unless Lucas finally releases a DECENT transfer of the Original trilogy). The care and love that has gone into this is without precident - and it shows. Even the colour balancing made my jaw drop as well. Again, just how it SHOULD have looked on the official releases.

Bravo Adywan, and THANK YOU for bringing Star Wars back to us the way it should have been in 1997

As this is such a quality release I had to just mention TWO things which I think could do with changing - I hope you don't mind a bit of costructive criticism. The addition of the rocks/mesa to the scene just before R2 gets captured just stood out like a sore thumb to me, and looked pasted in, unlike all the other changes. To be honest I think it works best as it was. I have nothing against adding anything to this scene, but it just looked artificial to me - like a cardboard painting added to the scene? It was the only change which didn't fit seemlessly for me.

I didn't think the music in the briefing room should have been there - it just 'feels' like it should be a musicless scene, but I guess that is just personal opinion at the end of the day, and is your creative choice. Maybe I am just too used to the original version lol!

The only other thing is the darkness of the transfer. I know this was an issue with the 2004 DVD release which I know this is based on, but any chance it could be lightened up a tad for the DVD releases? I had to alter my TVs brightness by 10-15% to get it about right.

Lastly the you have spelt copyright at the end of the credits wrong (copyrite).

That's all The dedication to your wife watching her soaps made me laugh out loud by the way!

Again, thank you for a wonderful release - I really do think this will make waves - you deserve any success which comes your way.

I'm off to watch it again

The hand is actually a full size physical model. i really didn't want to go down the CG route for something that can be created in the real world, but thanks for the offer. the lighting was pretty tricky to get exactly right because of the different light sources. as you can see from the pic this is where the light sources are coming from.
http://img251.imageshack.us/img251/4974/handev6.jpg
The top light source is higher up as you can see by the way the fingers are lit when they should be in the dark if there were only the 1 source. I just had to get it as close as possible with only 1 light source, but i can see i didn't get it quite right. i will probably tweak this shot for the DVD versions but i won't be getting rid of it.

The "flipper" from Ponda Boba. I had to pause and take a look at it. I imagine someone seeing this for the first time would be like "wtf am I looking at?" making the shot a distraction. It's like an orange tube with a half inflated gray balloon at the end. It doesn't look like anything that could hold a gun, much less like an actual appendage. Sure, wolfman's hand was out of place, but at least it looked like a hand and the blood made it perfectly clear that this was a severed limb that Obi-Wan must have cut off, in the quick action seconds before.

I have to say, as much as I'm loving every other second of the film, that shot pulled me out of it. Not being entirely educated in every bit of SW lore, I had always assumed that it was the "you'll be dead" guy who's hand got cut off. He's the one who pulls his blaster, and he's between Obi-Wan and walrus guy. So this shot was the first indication I'd ever had that it was walrus-guy who got chopped. It seems to me that, even if it goes against canon, it would be preferable to make it a human-like hand with the suggestion that it's the other guy who gets it. Because the first thought I had was, what the hell was that? Then I rewound, realized it was walrus-guy's hand, and the second thought I had was, how did that hand even draw that pistol from a holster, never mind how he ever intended to fire it? It doesn't make sense to me that a creature with flippers would even bother carrying a pistol designed for a humanoid hand.

That said, every other moment was pure gold. Great work, Ady.
