At this moment using Bittorrent, there are 9 seeds (I being one of them), with 135 leechers and the average upload rate is about 60kb a sec.

Not bad. Now might be a good time to jump on.

I'm downloading this via torrent, but took a peek at Usenet.com after reading some of the posts earlier.

I'm tempted to join due to the extreme difference in download speed, but do all newsgroups require you to pay for the service? Any free ones out there? (Yes, I know I'm cheap...)

Well giganews are doing a 3 day free trial at the moment which allows you to download up to 10gb

Hey! My name is in there too!!

Coolness.

Downloading the torrent and I'll be sure to try to seed it too. It'll be a day before it finishes anyways heh

Is it not sad that in this time, we are more surprised by acts of love than acts of hate?

For some reason, I stopped connecting to anyone and I'm stuck at 88%. Anyone else have this problem?

EDIT: Speak of the devil. The instant I post this, the torrent starts connecting again.

I wonder what the cast members would think about LFL's SE effort compared to this..... waves and impact indeed.

very e.x.c.i.t.e.d... can't wait to download this. I might even butter up some popcorn...

WOW! How did you speed up the dual so well between Vader and Kenobi?

THE new Death Star schematics made my jaw drop!!!

My jaw hit the floor when the new Tie fighters swarmed in!!!!

Well, it's PAL, so it's naturally 5% faster, right?

Seriously though, I want to join the other gushers for a minute and say fantastic job.

Now that I've seen the whole thing, the parts that really stand out as improved over either special edition are the tie battles and the saber battle. The Alderaan explosion looks very cool, and I thought the DS explosion would be cheesy but it was still effective.

There is one part I didn't like though. Sure a few creative changes I disagreed with but could handle (I thought I would HATE the prequel music insertions and the Imperial march, but they were used sparingly and well... the music edit for Obi-Wan's death was slightly less effective, but I could deal with it; the missing Jabba scene, well I realize why you took it out, it's too much work to fix and deserves to be a deleted scene for curiosity, nothing more) but this next item... ugh, it just looked bad (and I say that considering the high quality of virtually every other change).

The "flipper" from Ponda Boba. I had to pause and take a look at it. I imagine someone seeing this for the first time would be like "wtf am I looking at?" making the shot a distraction. It's like an orange tube with a half inflated gray balloon at the end. It doesn't look like anything that could hold a gun, much less like an actual appendage. Sure, wolfman's hand was out of place, but at least it looked like a hand and the blood made it perfectly clear that this was a severed limb that Obi-Wan must have cut off, in the quick action seconds before.

I guess you could take a look at the "lost scene" of the Cantina to get a glimpse of what the flipper is supposed to look like. Perhaps it needs more curvature and a thumb to make it look more like an alien hand? Something. The shot just looks crappy. No offense...

But beyond THAT, the rest of the shots look seemless, and amazing. It's hard to believe that the amateur tech of today looks as good as the Lucasfilm tech of 11 years ago!

Great job. Now if you could just fix the spelling errors and the cut off hand on the DVD, this would truly be a masterpiece!

PS: I didn't see the battle droid or George Lucas yet, but that's okay, I wasn't looking hard.

PPS: It was "Lord Darth Vader" in the credits originally, but I realize you must have changed it to be in keeping with "Darth" as a Sith title in the prequels, rather than his first name.

It's actually NTSC-Film (23.976 fps)

"Right now the coffees are doing their final work." (Airi, Masked Rider Den-o episode 1)

It's film? I thought it was digital...

Anyway, I use media player classic, and slowing it down one tick makes it look like the original speed to me.

But the flipper hand looked exactly how Ponda's looked in all the other scenes, just because we don't see exactly how he gets a good grip on the blaster, doesn't mean he cannot.
Ady did well and it looked pretty convincing to me. I do not agree about it looking bad.

Yeah but it looks dumb. The viewer doesn't have time to worry about that, all they see is this blob coming out of the sleeve and are like "huh" (kind of like a softened version of the "huh" moment when Greedo shoots in the '97 version). Unless they know the character well or were paying close attention to his hands (instead of to his face like you naturally would), it's going to just be a strange shot.

To fix the problem, just view it from the side instead of from the top and it's easier to tell it's a hand (mitten shaped, rather than appearing like a ball).

This is honest criticism... I'm sure he wanted feedback. Anyway, that was the one downside of this release for me.

PS: Here is what it looked like originally (pre-1977):

http://www.starwarz.com/tbone/plugins/p17_image_gallery/images/61.jpg

Tilt it a little more to the side and you'll have what I'm getting at. It's just a little too round and undefined like a blob, currently.

Grabbing it off usenet now. I haven't watched STAR WARS in its entirety for about 7 years so seeing this projected at about 14 feet across should really be something else. Congratulations and thank you to Adywan and everyone else involved.

I'm gonna grab some booze and some munchies then it'll be lights down, curtain up.

There was no speeding up of the film involved in the Obi-Wan/ Vader fight at all. the pace was changed only by editing so slowing it down wouldn't have made it the same speed as the original. And it isn't PAL it's NTSC.

As for Ponda Baba's arm, i modelled the had from all the sources available and i kept it true to the original. This edit was just for the fans and i'm not really bothered if it confuses people when see the flipper. it is there to correct a mistake and the original hand sticks out like a sore thumb to me knowing that he had a flipper (that can be seen clearly in other shots). As for the blood, the saber cortorizes the wound so there would be no blood. here's a snapshot from the holiday special that shows his flipper, even though the colouring is different to that in ANH because of the lighting:
http://img214.imageshack.us/img214/919/aqualishsittingmf4.jpg

It was originally changed to the wolf hand because of the original flipper not being able to hold a gun and might confuse the audience but as i said it's there for the fans who know what it should look like. I might tweak it slightly for the DVD but i can't change the angle. I have to keep it at the angle it originally was due to the other elements in the shot.

and it wasn't "Lord" Darth Vader in the special edition credits so i haven't changed anything there

I knew that the changes i made wouldn't please everyone but this was originally just for me and it's exactly the way i wanted it . Oh my god i have turned into George Lucas.

It looks sped up, but I guess without a side by side comparison it's really hard to tell. Then again in 2004 many people thought the fight was sped up too... wishful thinking on our part I suppose. I assumed it was PAL because I thought people were saying the previously released clips were PAL.

My bad on Vader's title... so it was changed in 1997 to just "Darth Vader" (credits were unchanged in 2004).

If it could just be a little less round, like in the shot above, that's what I'm saying. The hands may have that bulbous look to them, but when the "palm" is tilted, they're skinny looking (notice when he pushes Luke's shoulder). As is it looks like they're big huge things (obviously the actor was wearing rubber mittens). Your call, of course...

PS: Spotted the battle droid, and it looks good, very unobtrusive. But I'm at a loss where Georgie is. Is it "old George" or "young George"? Give us a hint!

True, but I also thought that maybe certain species' bodies in the SW Universe have something about their bodies that somehow won't cauterize". Although I fine with it either way.

The model hand is exactly the same shape as it is above. it's just that at the angle it needed to be it looks different. I will post a photo of the actual model hand later when i charge up the camera batteries and it'll be the same position as in the pic above and you'll see what i mean.

i would like to hear everyone else's opinion about this is possible. Should i redo the shot or keep it as it is?

Which is the way it should always be. Popular opinion is fine and dandy, but at the end of the day, every edit should be what the EDITOR wants it to be. I just got through skimming the film, and I have to say "Job well done." There's a shot or two I would have done differently, but you were the one who sat down and put in the hours. Kudos on finishing, and try not to let it overwhelm you as the requests for ESB start pouring in.

I was 100% prepared to point out every flaw I had with your edit, ady. Now that I've seen it, the edit is too good to shoot apart.

Excellent work all around. The changes I thought I wouldn't be in favor of (the ROTS music in the fight scene) I ended up liking very much. The only real change that I didn't like was the Tie attack during the Death Star battle. It breaks up the pacing a bit and the first pan shot runs too long. But hell, Biggs gets a kill and that's enough to make up for it.

Speaking of which, one of favorite subtle change is having Luke scream "Biggs!" over the radio.

Out of all 4 of the Star Wars versions I have, yours probably ranks second, behind the GOUT DVD from 2006. Even if the picture is shoddy, I still prefer the original Star Wars over any Special Edition out there. But your edit most certainly is the best SE of Star Wars out there and damn near beats the original. Now go drink, eat, and take the rest of the year off. You've earned it.

I'm fine with the shot as-is, but are there any photos of the underside of Ponda's flipper? If there's more detail to work with, maybe have his arm flipped over, rather than 'palm' down?

Adywan,

Just adding my appreciation for all the hard work you have put into this. It has certainly paid off! Your work is 100% professional and you have produced something that is going to be talked about! I was expecting quality from you from the contributions in this thread but you blew away my expectations with this finished product.

Can't wait to PIF this once the DVD version hits usenet.

Congratulations and well done.

Dangelus

And thanks for kindly including me in the credits!

In all the excitement about the new stuff, I forgot my favorite bit; the picture and audio correction. The main reason why I cannot stand to watch the '04 DVD's is because they screwed up the transfer so badly.

I haven't found the battle droid or George, but I wasn't exactly looking for them either.

And let's not forget that Darth Maul bleeds, so the "sabers always cauterize wounds completely" isn't 100%.

The Aquilash costume is slightly different in the photo (from the SWHS I take it?), for instance the sleeves are cut short and he's got that shirt underneath.
