The last time we got into this discussion, someone mentioned the number of keys that could be used for Blu-ray was on the order of billions. Billions of keys. That's a shit load of keys. It's enough keys that yes, you could disable one single player (not the whole line of a certain model) and still have plenty of keys left. The current world population is approximately 7 billion people. If they can do double or even triple that number of keys, there will be no forseeable shortage.

I do agree that having any form of DRM is pathetic and laughable. I imagine it'll only take a couple of weeks for someone to hack through BD+ and that'll be the end of it.

Since no one's answered my question (though don't get me wrong, I've enjoyed reading whatever else you people are saying on the bd vs. hddvd subject) I'll ask again if it's at all possible to update a profile 1.0 player to the latest profile.

LOL...nice one, ADM.

As to updating, I think I've seen some mention of upping 1.0 to 1.1, but I wouldn't put money on it. As to 2.0, you might be able to find a firmware update for some players, but for the most part, I think you're out of luck.

I guess we can all just wait until profile 3 comes out, or 4, or 5...gotta love these unfinished products....LOL

Also, I didn't mean to give the impression that I myself actually own a piece of hardware from either format. I was just curious.

I wouldn't bank on too many Profile 1.0 players being upgraeable. If it's important to you, I would wait for Profile 1.1 players. They will likely have more processing power and be upgradable to Profile 2.0.

And I think Profile 2.0 is the end of the line

You really shouldn't be asking us.

So, I guess I should buy a PS3, huh.

I really can't tell if you are being sincere or sarcastic. I wouldn't, But hey, It's your money...In any case, you should look at everything that's available to you and decide for yourself. Don't be a hater, Just be happy with what you've got.

In terms of Bluray. If you steer clear of 1.0 profile you SHOULD be okay. As far as I know you can't go from 1.0 to 2.0 outside of PS3.

I know I'm probably in the minority but I really hope Bluray loses. I really can't stomach the thought of Sony being in control. But I guess we'll just see how things pan out.

Well i would recommend the PS3. In terms of picture quality the PS3 is amazing for both bluray & DVD. I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to test out a couple of bluray players, a samsung and philips, and quality wise they were really inferior to the PS3. the price was slightly more than the PS3 at the time and i just couldn't justify the extra bucks for worse quality. After all not only do you get a player but also a great games console (even though the games available at the moment are pretty crappy). i also think that some of the 1.0 profile players can be upgraded to 2.0 through a firmware update.

i do have to admit that i'm not a sony lover in the slightest but bluray is winning the format war at the moment and i hope that bluray comes out on top because microsoft are pushing the HD-DVD format and i hate Microsoft hell of a lot more than Sony.

I would never buy a PS3 as a blu-ray player just for the way you have to load the disc. I can't stand it. Besides, it won't take long before good blu-ray players will be much cheaper than a PS3.

If i had disposable income I'd go the PS3 route. Many of my friends have done this and it seems like the best way to go--you get a great Blu-ray player and an upconverting DVD player, plus an okay game console that you have the option of playing if you wish; if you really want HD-DVD capability then you can just throw a $99 standalone player to your home theater and voila.

You cannot buy a 1.0 profile player anymore. 1.1 profile was REQUIRED as of November.

At this point, there's no reason to believe that Blu-ray even has a chance of losing. Only two studios are left in the HD-DVD camp. HD-DVD has essentially lost the battle.

Wow, that is amazing! 6 to 1?? I never thought we'd see that so soon. I'm not sure if those numbers will continue but its still a real kick in the teeth to HD-DVD that shows how many fence-sitters jumped in the Blu-Ray yard after the Warners announcement.

What, 75% exclusive support and 6 to 1 sales margins aren't good enough?

Seriously though, if anything close to those figures keeps up in the next week or two I'm going to start calling "fence-sitters" stubborn.

Well, I consider myself a fence sitter, and it's not because I'm stubborn. I'm just not ready to dive into HD formats. I have no HDTV. My DVD collection is still going strong. Don't get me wrong. I'm sure I will eventually. I just really have no desire to at the moment, especially with two formats still out there. It's not likely things will change, but anything could happen.

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

Since you have no HDTV and have no plans to purchase an HD format, I would not call you a fence-sitter. I'm talking about the people like ADigitalman who are willing to buy an HD format but are "waiting out" the "format war."

Funny, so far the only way I've invested in either format is by getting the blu-ray disc of Blade Runner. I don't even have an HDTV! It's just that I already have the old dvd and the 2006 remaster, which I picked up knowing full well that it would likely be included in the '07 set. When the final cut was released I took the bus up to NY to see it on opening night and then saw it twice more when it opened in DC. Several factors led to me getting it on bd. The biggest is probably that the documentaries would all be on regular dvd's that I could, y'know, actually watch. Those were the only things in the set I was really dying to see anyway since I've already seen the original version (letterboxed on that scifi channel broadcast back in June of 2000, wish I'd taped it!) and of course the 1992 and 2007 versions. Also, between those three versions I kinda feel like I've already seen the international version, so I'm not really dying to watch that either. I can wait to watch the workprint. I didn't find out about discs 2 and 4 being regular dvd's until I read a review of the set, and then WB announced their plan for blu-ray exclusivity. I'd already been hoping for various reasons that it would be the format they'd go with anyway. That, coupled with the fact that I'd have to shell out for the briefcase just to get all five discs on regular dvd, plus the fact that I already have both of the old releases made it a no brainer to get it on either hddvd or blu-ray and not regular dvd.

anyway, here's my perspective on the whole thing:

If VC-1 is as good as a whole lot of people are saying it is, it won't go away for a while (if at all) as long as blu-ray is still around as a format. Microsoft will continue making royalties off of sales of bd's using that codec. Toshiba is screwed, yes, but let's not forget that blu-ray players are backward compatible with dvd and so toshiba will keep making some sort of royalty off the sales of bd players. Time Warner must've not really ever had much faith in hddvd since they've been format neutral for just about as long as blu-ray's been on the market. Maybe the aforementioned standard dvd royalties coupled with whatever deal they signed with the BDA made it that much easier to just drop hddvd altogether. WB probably also looked at the really big picture and saw hddvd exclusivity as prolonging the race and keeping either format from really taking off, though who is to say what would've happened had they not sided with blu-ray?

One thing I said several months ago is that once one of these formats wins and becomes the new standard, it'll be all we ever really need. I still stand by that because just as vhs, beta and laserdisc were the first analog tv formats, hddvd and blu-ray are the first hdtv formats. I'm convinced that the reason there even was a format race in the first place is because these companies realize hi-def is the future of television. I mean, how soon are we going to see televisions produced in a large quantity that have a resolution greater than 1080p? We're finally beyond NTSC and PAL which means we can watch movies at 24 frames per second just as they are in the theater. From what I've read here and there, people used to watch 16mm prints of movies on a projector at home. It would seem we finally have in these new formats the television equivalent of that.

"Recent information that BDMV (Blu-ray's commercial movie format) discs soon won't play without AACS encryption. Neither the discs or the software required to encrypt the content have been available to consumers so far, but Authoring for non-encrypted discs has. This will apparently force people who have already created their own BD movies from Camcorder footage or MPEG transport streams (from digital TV) may have to spend a lot of money copying discs to new media, or simply lose the abillity to play it."

What? Does this mean if I don't put some sort of copy protection on my home videos that they won't play? As soon as the price becomes reasonable (and it will be sooner than later now with the Warner decision), I had planned on burning my standard definition camcorder videos to a blu-ray disc because I'll be able to fit so much more on a disc and not worry about compressing it. I don't care about whatever copy protection there is for commercial movies, I just want to burn my own discs. Oh and if I ever was to legally purchase a blu-ray disc, I would expect it to play.

Also, where is some good information on the region coding for the new players? I know HD doesn't have it and Blu-ray has 3 but are they also set to restrict the current dvd regions.
