Yeah, I know it isn't that bad, but I would be one of those assholes who complain about steam. For me it really isn't a matter of complaining about everything, but really just the principal of the matter. I'd like to think that someday I could play all my games that I spent my money on with my computer without having to worry about being connected to the internet. What happens if Valve goes bottom up? Or if there is a great worldwide economic collapse and the internet becomes a thing of the past? Or if some strange ancient germ renders the entire population (including Valve's IT guys) into blood thirsty vampires with myself as the sole survivor living in my own fortified honky paradise and I get tired of playing chess against a granite bust and decide to play some Half-Life 2...

Or perhaps I just want to be able to play my games without having to go online and varify the validity of my honestly purchased product while the guy who pirates it gets to play it internet free.

Hmm, I can't help you with that last part (about the Vampires ), but from what I've read on the Steam forums, Valve seems to have given some indications that if they ever went belly up, they'd update all their games to release them from Steam. So in other words, if they went bankrupt, you wouldn't need Steam to play them anymore. But it's not like you need Steam to play them, after the initial install, right now. Simply set Steam to offline mode after verifying the files and that's that. No more need to go online. You can even set the game to not auto-update. That way, if you ever need to go back online, it won't try to download any updates.

The guy who pirates it gets to play it Internet free, but he doesn't get any updates. I don't know if that means much to you, but it means something to me. I would say Valve has the best anti-pirating system right now. Compare Steam to 2k Games Bioshock activation or COD4 PunkBuster crap. Steam and VAC are a much better system that give far fewer headaches.

It is still the principal of the matter. I want to be able to install my games internet free. You say I can install it and then set it to offline mode so it wont ever need to access the internet again, but what if I want to uninstall it to free up disk space then sometime down the road wish to play it again. No matter what they do, they will never stop piracy and in the end they will just irritate honest users. Also what if I want to sell my game later on, is that even possible? Doesn't steam register it to me thus making the original discs about as useless as a pirated copy if I want to sell them or pass them on to somebody else? I could be wrong on that one, I am not sure how it works. Also what if I pack the game away, and come across it 20 years down the line, won't I need to remember my old user name and password if I every want to use them again? Or does it just check to make sure the discs are the originals? That would be more reasonable, but still very annoying.

I've determined that the problem is my TV. This model isn't capable of doing progressive scan in anything higher than 480. Still, Assassin's Creed looks pretty durn good in 1080i, though.

If you want to uninstall it, what you can do is "Backup local game content". You simply backup the game to disc, burn it to CD or DVD, then uninstall it. Later on, when you reinstall, you simple reinstall it and start playing in offline mode.

Also, you won't need to remember your username and password, you just simply don't login. As long as you're not playing a multiplayer game, you'll be fine. You'll simply be playing in offline mode.

The only thing you can't do is resell the games. Yes, they're tied to your Steam account and they haven't come up with a way to allow you to resell them. That never bothered me though since I've never resold a game in my life. Perhaps one day we'll have the ability to sell or give a game to someone else and transfer the game to them, but as of right now, that's not possible with Steam.

So anybody still playing Galaxy? I'm coming down to the final stretch now. I've gotten 120 with Mario, and I've gotten 100 now with Luigi. Hope to finish it today or tomorrow. But, man, I guess I've just gotten better because I've flown through this with Luigi. Even Luigi's Purple Coins, which was giving me so much trouble when I played through the first time, I managed to beat in less than 20 minutes today.

Yeah, just like Super Mario Bros. 2 (or Lost Levels), Luigi jumps higher but has worse traction making him harder to control. It might just be me, but I think his throw is slightly weaker than Mario's.

But I just finished! 242 stars down! Zero to go! What a blast! I can't believe I played for seven hours today! Should be doing my homework instead... Damned intersession course.

Thanks! And thanks for the help along the way. Hope it ends as well for you too!

And now... back to Super Mario Bros. 2 (The Lost Levels), my first download on the Virtual Console!

Since Christmas, my wife and I (playing co-star mode) have been steadily moving along through Super Mario Galaxy. We've only just beaten the Honeyhive Galaxy, though.

If anyone is interested, though, my Super Mario World project thread will be available for viewing for the short-term future, at least (see my signature or go here). The forum that is hosting it is in the midst of upgrading (sound familiar?), so posting is disabled there. I would love to hear what you fan editing folks think of a project like this, since it has much in common with some of the things done here.

Wow, so when you say Super Mario Bros. 2 (The Lost Levels) I take that to mean they released to virtual console the original Japanese version of Super Mario Bros. 2 that was never released in North America other than as part of Super Mario All Stars as The Lost Levels. It has the old Famicom/NES graphics and not the 16bit SMAS graphics right? That is really cool. I wouldn't have imagined Luigi's jump to have been different back then, I thougt the only time his jump and traction were changed was in the North America version of Super Mario Bros. 2. Dave said they were different in Super Mario World too, out of all my years playing that game I really never noticed any difference between Mario and Luigi other than in their appearance. That is interesting.

Yeah, that's exactly what I meant. I put that in parentheses just so people wouldn't get confused. But it's sold on the Wii Shop (as SMB:TLL, although no graphical changes are in the game so it says Super Mario Bros. 2 on the title screen) for 600 Wii points. I'm not sure about this Super Mario World thing, though. I think maybe Dayv is thinking about the American SMB2 because they really don't have any differences in any game where Luigi is player 2. Except in the All-Stars release that contains Mario World, even the sprite is exactly the same.

Oh, and funny comic, sean.

Dayv might be thinking of the Game Boy Advance port of Super Mario World, where Luigi's sprite and abilities are closer to the American SMB2 version.

Yeah, you're right! That's true. Don't know how I forgot about that. But it does follow tradition in that sense, since the Advance version is a one-player game, Luigi is given different abilities.

Yeah, I didn't figure that out until late. I would just always use long jumps. But even they can benefit by a spin in order to get some extra length or just a split second to realign yourself, which helped immensely in the Luigi's Purple Coins stage.

Another word of advice, especially if you're looking to complete everything, is to collect star bits like mad! You will need large amounts of them. And by large amounts I mean thousands.

And maybe it's just that I can't draw a straight line in my head, but when using those damned sling pods, I always had to pull it back slightly more to the left than what looked to me like the right trajectory. Maybe it's just me...

Yeah, the camera's about the only thing in that game that's not perfect. It could be downright obnoxious sometimes, especially when it wouldn't allow you to move it, even into first person view. You'd never see the SM64 camera not let you go into first-person. It seems somewhat controlling in this game rather than letting you control it. But that's really my only gripe about that game, and it usually does a good job of being where it needs to be.

I'm on the eight Assassin mission of Assassin's Creed, out of nine. So far, it's a fairly good game, and very pretty to look at. But Ubisoft really needed to think the design through a bit more when it comes to investigating the targets and give the NPCs some more varied dialogue. Even if you're in Arab-Controlled Damascus, Hebrew-Controlled Jerusalem, or European-controlled Acre, you'll hear NPCs you rescue say the exact same thank you lines.

I'll try and pick up Super Mario Galaxy next week once my classes start up and I'm on the commercial side of town every day.

Really? You talked about it so much and posted so many pre-release screenshots that I simply assumed you'd already long since gotten it and beaten it. But, yeah, it doesn't disappoint, so hurry up and get it!
