Bottom line:
A comprehensive Star Wars set in either HD-DVD or Blu-Ray (i would say it is more likely to be Blu-Ray) containing SE's,OOt and theatrical and other versions of the PT plus bonuses will happen over the next couple of years.There is a boatload of cash to be made from it so that is what drives LFL so it will happen.The average consumer,diehard and casual fan alike will buy a comprehensive set like that so it is a cash-in waiting to happen.What you guys think that it wont happen before the release of the live-action show to hype that up?

No, there will be continued quarter-assed releases against our wishes. If Lucasfilm was competent, we would have the 30th anniversary boxset we all expected.

Yeah, that was pretty bad, but that was a mastering flaw, and not part of the design. The BTTF DVD is still a great example of how to treat a classic series. I would love nothing more than to have all three Star Wars films in one simple package just like the BTTF set. A set like that, containing a measly three dual-layer discs, with anamorphic widescreen and static menus seems like something so simple, yet we will never see it.

No, I don't. Here's why. How long did it take Lucas to embrace DVD? That's right, it wasn't until AFTER TPM came out, sometime in 2000 or 2001 and that was only TPM. We didn't get the trilogy (I refuse to call the SEs the OT) until after AOTC came out (the 2004 set). Knowing that, I just don't believe we'll see the SEs on Blu-ray before the end of the decade (sometime after 2010 maybe). We will never see the OOT on Blu-ray. Lucas has made it abundantly clear that those movies no longer exist to him. I wouldn't even put it past him to write something into his will to completely prevent the OOT from ever seeing the light of day as a proper release.

Besides all that, weren't the prequels shot in 1k resolution? Doesn't that essentially keep them from ever having a 1080p release? Someone else will have to weigh in on that, but I seem to remember that the cameras they used only shot up to 1k, so it's impossible to get them in 1080p. Sure, they might see a release as 720p, but they'll never look as good as the SEs, which can be released as 1080p (and if I'm not mistaken, have aired as 1080p).

Cash doesn't seem to drive Lucas anymore. If it did, then he wouldn't have released the 2006 set in 2006. He would've waited until May 2007 and done the release then, to coincide with the hype of the 30th Anniversary. The 2004 set was driven by cash, as can be seen by all the flaws in the remastering and the reluctance to simply delay it a little longer to fix those flaws before releasing it.

The latest word from LFL is that there won't be any more video releases until its on HD, and they aren't going with HD until the format war is over. Since it seems that Blu-Ray has now won the format war--or, to put it more fairly, that by the mid-year HD-DVD will probably be obsolete considering where things are now--LFL might start organising the HD set sometime this fall. That could mean that we could see the set as early as christmas 2009--since I think a lot of the extra content will simply be the pre-existing DVD extras, and even though there has been talk about an "all bluescreen" version of TPM or OT deleted scenes or more extensive PT docs this could easily be put together in under a year since theres no need for commentary tracks, OT interviews, etc. Given Lucasfilm's track record though I can easily see it taking until 2010, which would put it in sync with the live-action series.

AOTC and ROTS were shot in standard HD res, which is 1080p. But then they are cropped so I guess you are right in that they are less than the full res of HD.

This frustration really makes me wish SW never existed at all, had we known 30 years ago that we'd have to deal with all the junk Lucas would give us. In the end, it was LFL who won, not the fanbase that could have saved the OOT. Its a shame that the one thing that madeLucas sucessful has bitten the dust locked in shoddy DVDs, never to exist again, and the facade of the SE has become its permanent destiny. The only real hope now is to bite down the bullet, find the GOUT on ebay, dig out the old 4:3 TV's, and hope they won't suffer from next year's digital conversion. It'll be bad, but maybe in the next 50-100 years they can salvage what's left of the OOT. Deny it or not, Lucas has absolutely suceeded in destroying the OT. Makes me want to wish film never existed.

I grew up watching these damn films on Betamax so anything is a damn improvement for me!Would I like to have a really high quality version of the OOT?Yes sure as hell I would,that's how I came to be a member here but because there isn't one right now will not stop me taking the things I love from the films.You know it is an attitude I cant understand wishing the films never existed.Watch (in whatever kind of quality you can-fan-made from the top folks here,the GOUT,old VHS,whatever),enjoy,relax.They're good films you know...

Very true. When I travel I watch a 4x3 version of Star Wars on my ipod ripped from my VHS of a 1987 tv broadcast (with commercials!). I'll never wish the film hadn't been made. Just that Lucas wasn't such a dickhead.

In 2050 I'll probably still be watching that same 1987 VHS tape.

They also said that they might just go straight to digital downloads if the format war doesn't get decided soon. With Netflix making that deal with LG to deliver a set top box that'll download HD content to your TV, I can easily see LFL decide to go that route instead. That would save them the costs of distribution and they'd be able to completely control where and when you can watch it. They wouldn't have to worry about people possibly ripping copies of the Blu-ray disc.

Mind you, I don't actually expect something like that to happen, but once again, I can easily see it happening. Putting all those things out on HD (Blu-ray) makes perfect sense, which is why I don't think it'll happen. Lucas hasn't done anything that's made sense in the last few years. Let's not forget that this is the same guy who claims to have 100 episodes done of an animated series, but he can't find anyone to air it. The last high profile DVD release they did was ROTS in 2005. The 2006 set didn't sell so well (gee, I wonder why with everyone already having the 2004 set) and I fully expect that if the animated series has to be released on DVD that it won't sell to well either. I know that no matter how good it looks, I'm not going to spend a dime on it.

Going way off topic here, but that set top box HD downloader lordjedi mentioned would be a brilliant replacment for the current system of TV. Let's say you had access to instantly watch any show airing on the stations in your "cable service", in other words, anything you see in the weekly listing for your local newspaper on station that you recieve would be instantly accessible through this box. If you get sci-fi, then you could see any episode of Battlestar Galactica from the very begining of the series until the latest episode. They could designate places in each episode for commercial, just like they do now, and even if you are watching a ten year old show the top set box could automatically insert current advertisements into it. This way you could watch an entire run of a TV series for free if you can endure the commercials, and instead of releasing overly expensive DVD boxsets for seasons of a TV show, they could let you pay a fee to have access to watch the episodes without commercials. This could replace Tivo, DVRs, TV shows on DVD, and the only part I wouldn't like, movies on DVD. I really like owning my own movies with their own cases, pressed on a disc that I can pick up and carry with me anywhere.

To try to tie this blantantly off topic post back to the original discussion, I would really like the original trilogy with its own case, pressed on three discs, in good quality, that I can pick up and carry with me anywhere.

Well, I don't think it's going to replace any of the things you mentioned. Rental didn't replace buying movies and tv shows. On demand didn't replace rental. Rental/On demand hasn't replaced watching movies/tv shows on TV through regular channels. It'll just be an additional revenue stream. It'll be great for people who don't want to own it and only want to watch it once. For people, like me, who want to hear commentary tracks and see making ofs and behind the scenes footage, it won't go anywhere. It's something that I would use, but I wouldn't use it exclusively. Some programs I want to hear commentary, others I could care less. For those ones, this box is perfect.

The Lord of the Rings is looking mighty tasty right now... I think I'm giving a lot of my nerdy fanaticism over to it that used to be taken by Star Wars.
