There was a time when I was into Anime big-time, but I only have time for “tourist JapAnime” now. You know the stuff that is so universally lauded (or hated) that grandmothers in West Texas have seen it; Ninja Scroll, Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell, et al. There will always be a soft spot in my heart for the original Fist of the North Star. I know the animation is bad and the scale jumps around like crazy (one minute a dude is 10 feet tall and the next minute he’s 30 feet tall), but I love it. It can be downright enjoyable and almost surreal after a 4:20 session or about nine beers. Then again I guess everything is a little surreal after trees or too much beer.

I still enjoy Star Blazers. Leader Deslock was the first positive gay role model I can remember. At some point I want to see Yamato. I hear they use the “Gamelon” music when the Americans attack in the flashback scenes.

Neon Genesis Evangelion is also on my “to see” list.

I'm not saying anime is bad, Ric, just that this whole "Anime is so much better than anything America produces just because it is" attitude that gets on my nerves. Sure, some anime and manga are good. But some anime and Manga suck royally. It's no differen't than American comics and cartoons in that respect.

I personally don't buy manga because I refuse to pay that much for such small books that don't even have color most of the time. If you have the money and the interest, knock yourself out, though.

As for not having bought an X-Men comic since the 90s, well, your experience soured because the 90s totally sucked for the industry as a whole, mostly thanks to the XTREEM! craze inspired by hacks like Rob Liefield.

I know what you mean. There can be crappy Japanese cartoons, just as there are crappy American cartoons. Anime's not a genre, just like cartoons in general aren't a genre (even though they're both treated as such). I don't see what you have against buying tankoban, though. I mean, I think the prices are pretty good. Eight dollars for about 200 pages. That's not bad. And what's wrong with black and white? You don't see people saying that black and white movies should cost less than color movies (at least, not that I've seen).

In my opinion, comics (such as Marvel and DC stuff) have their qualities as do manga.

If an anime is well made, the anime can outshine a manga. Otherwise do not bother (re: DBZ).
