Episode 3 - Editing Back in Progress (* unfinished project *) — Page 14

I've tweaked it with my suggestions from above, It now plays like this:

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=GOE7M5FK

Part 1 Establishs deep thought> Padme: Long Shot, Close up - Anakin: Long shot, Close Up (shortened Palpitine voice-over)
Part 2 Establishes the Connection across the city> Padme: Long Shot, Close up, City Shot - Anakin: Long shot, Back shot (emphasis on Anakin's turmoil), City Shot, Close Up
Part 3 Now Communicating, Convey's Emotion> Padme: Close Up (She feels the connection, music rises) - Anakin: Close Up (Feels Pain and Anger)
Part 4 The Exit> Padme: Lowers Head (In Fear) - Anakin: Turns to Leave, Decision Made.

After watching this a couple times, It's almost as if Anakin tuns to the Darkside in THIS scene while standing at the window. When he turns to leave, he already knows what's he's going to do, and so does Padme. This fits with your edit and Anakin not hesitating to chop off Mace's Arm. I don't think you should add the "what have I done line". You may not even need the "you can't" line. He know's exactly what he's done. Maybe adding Vader's Theme as he's leaving the window would change the whole context?

I've added Vader's theme and also redited a few other parts, I cut Mace's "not yet" and palps "it's treason then". I made Anakin cutting off Mace's arm much quicker without any dialog, and cut Anakin's, "I'll do whatever you ask"

With Darkhelmet's wonderful re edit and pace of the palps Mace Fight, and fixed Palpatine Lighting, I think it makes it possible to cut even more of the lame dialog out. Check it out and let me know what you think below.

I like the Padme and Anakin edits... a bit rough but nothing that can't be fixed...

I think you should, however, remove that fanfare before the cut to Palpatines office... just start with the "dun" with the subdued music... or maybe find some way to cut to it... maybe place that unused shot of the outside of his office at sunset from the deleted scene or something...

Otherwise kinda cool. I love the subtle editing of the conversation with Anakin.

As far as the actual fight goes I like it... the sound is rough but that can be fixed... the use of Darth Vaders music there is ok... but there are better choices...

I like it though... overall it's good

jedi_jra : Nice, subtle editing of the Anakin/Padme scene overall! I might do the same in my edit for the most part. The use of Vader's theme I thought worked nicely, though the audio edit was a bit rough on the transition to the next scene. A couple of things that don't work well editing-wise is the cut from Anakin seated and looking straight ahead of him to the close-up of him looking to the side and the shortened Palpatine voice-over which sounds too fragmentary to be a complete line.

I know you didn't like the quick series of Anakin shots originally used in the movie, but there may be nothing that can be done if each of the other shots is too short to be used alone. Also, maybe you could cut Palp's line completely.

With the Vader music, it does seem to be much more fateful of a scene; nice job there. I was hoping to do an edit along the lines of yours in regard to Anakin rushing in and lopping Mace's hand off to stop him from murdering Palp, but the footage just doesn't seem to allow for it as the time/space relationship of Anakin's speed entering the room and his lightsaber ignition from a standstill don't really give the impression of one fluid set of motions.

The story I've ended up with in using the footage as best I could is that Anakin decides to involve himself in Palp's arrest against Mace's orders only to find the Jedi Master and council leader about to murder Palp; this makes Anakin's allegiance to Palp more understandable as he has witnessed a Jedi Master bent on a dark side act. It also makes what was originally Anakin's later lie to Padme about Mace a fact he really believes is true.

Anakin has been duped but only insofar as his slippery-slope moral descent has led him to that point. Where he actually fell to the dark side is up for debate, but I feel that moment may very well have been when he slaughtered the Sand People in Episode II. I am comfortable with this idea, because it makes sense of Anakin's violent acts up to this point and seems realistic in that his fall was not a leap but smaller steps made in the heat of the moment of which other Jedi were not aware nor did Anakin confess to make them aware; essentially, he hid his crimes of passion.

Regarding other edits you made, I like how Mace no longer says "Not yet"; it makes the arrest seem more official and less personal and works well. Taking out Palp's line "It's treason, then" might be a problem for the overall story, but it was nicely done; one small suggestion: cut Palp's lightsaber shot shorter so that we either do not see him hit the recorder switch (which is what it was supposed to be in order for him to record the supposed Jedi rebellion) or that the flick of the switch seems to ignite the lightsaber itself.

Your edit has shown me some possibilities which hadn't occurred to me, so thanks for those and for your critique!

Update : As I head into editing the final battle of the final third of the movie, the running time so far has been cut to about 1 hour and 40 minutes even with the inclusion of 4 out of the 6 deleted scenes!
Author
Time
Update Things have been busy, and I haven't had much motivation to get back to the actual movie editing, but I have finally done more tweaking to the title crawl.

Continued thanks to Erikstormtrooper for his help sorting this out; I think it's just about finalized. It seems the hardest thing about editing Grievous out of the movie might be writing him out of the crawl!

Time
Update : Okay, well I'm seeing light at the end of the anamorphic rough-cut tunnel, I think. Total running time is, and I can imagine this might freak some people out, about 1 hour 34 minutes including credits! But there is still more editing to be done.

I will be adding in footage from other Star Wars movies to do things like filling out the elapsed time between certain events (like Goodmusician has done in 1 or 2 of his scene edits). I'd also like to do an internal cockpit shot of either Obi-Wan's fighter or Padme's ship entering Hyperspace! Add in a bit more of the OT feel.

I'm hopeful for the end of the movie, though I am still a bit apprehensive that it might come off like a slideshow instead of a proper end to a movie. Too early to tell.

Thanks for the Update! I can't wait to see the finished product!

Any chance of another teaser?

Hey all, I know I made another thread about this, but I thought I'd say it here too as this is where my edit began:

I finally finished an idea of how I wish Episode III had been edited (the finale sequence).

You can view parts 1-4 here:

Part I
Part II
Part III
Part IV

Enjoy!

Hey, GM: I checked out "Part IV". Nice job with resequencing the shots for better storytelling and omitting Vader altogether!

You inspired me to check something out.

Your movement of the entering of the Jedi Temple actually coincides with an omission in the score.

If you compare the film to the cue "Lament," that EXACT placement is where a pretty hefty section is omitted.

I tried fooling with it myself to see if I could emulate what you've done and you know what I found, the movement of the entering of the Jedi Temple nearly perfectly fits that omitted moment, and then the return to Kashyyk and the music there is exactly how it should be.

Only problem is, the music doesn't quite feel right which may partially by why its changed in its placement.

The other thing is that there are obviously two different performances of the same cue. Lament on the album omits a segment and at first I thought it was an edit, but I'm noticing that the whole performance starting at that omitted moment seems to be slower on the album than in the film.

but anyways... I'm sure you've noticed the omission of the score... but anyways, thought I'd chime in.

I did this real quick to give you all an idea of some of the thoughts I'd had along with what I was talking about in my last post:

That's really cool to hear. Cinematically, the whole sequence seemed better to me with the "Temple Massacre" moved to another point in time. I appreciate your confidence that I had noticed the score omission, but I'm more of a visuals and story guy than a music guy.

Thanks for clueing me into the facts about the score.

Update : I will be receiving my rebuilt PC by this weekend and will be continuing to edit.

I am planning on the editing being completed by the end of January. Hopefully I will complete it sooner to allow for a full DVD release by January's end instead.

Update : I now have, and am proudly typing from, my new suped-up box (courtesy of my compu-phile brother). Editing is again underway.

I'm excited about some of the possibilities presented by the Hi-Def hardware uprezing I was able to do at the office; this uprezing will hopefully mean the creation of new shots never seen in the original movie; that is, shots created by zooming in on original shots.

The movie suffers quite a bit in some scenes from the lack of shot variety as usually seen in good Hollywood filmmaking. Other tweaks will likely be small zooms to adjust for framing. All-in-all, the hope is to create an edit which plays cinematically more like one of the GOUT movies.

Padme had a question for me, though...

Yes, my dear Padme, it will be. Oh, yes, it will be...

Well, things aren't going as well in the land of HD uprezzing as I would like. My initial approach didn't give me the results I was hoping for.

This first image was the result of a convoluted process involving a DVCPro tape deck which upscales DV to 1080i.
http://img261.imageshack.us/img261/3861/hd1400uprezct4.jpg

I tried two more approaches, and both worked okay. Neither is what I really was hoping for, though.

Red Giant Instant HD Uprez in Premiere Pro using an additional sharpen (the red, blue and green specs are there because I was using a trial software version).
http://img184.imageshack.us/img184/1434/redgiantuprezjv5.jpg

VirtualDubMod HD Uprez Output Frame Export using resize, deinterlace, general convolution and maybe 1 other thing (can't remember right now).
http://img184.imageshack.us/img184/3846/virtualdubmoduprezgh8.jpg

Does anyone have any tips, tricks or other suggestions? Can I expect it to get any better than either Red Giant or VirtualDubMod?

Why not use the HDTV versions that were posted to usenet? I used them for a couple of zoom shots i needed for my edit and the results were perfect. uprezzing the shots from DVD source will never give you the results you are looking for. There are actually 2 different 1080p releases available on usenet in x264 format in a.b.hdtv.x264 posted between 11th & 14th december (the esir version looks the better one). Then all you have to do is create a composition in Adobe after effects for each shot needed. the compositions res should be: 1024 x 576 for PAL format and 853 x 480 for NTSC format. once you have finished the shot you can export it to lossless avi then resize it to 720 x 576 or 720 x 480 using virtualdub and the results should be just what you need. If you need any help just give me a shout

Ady! This is a HUGE breath of fresh air! I had totally forgotten about the HD Star Wars TV releases (having no interest in them since the OT was only the SE version).

Thanks for lending your expert knowledge. I can't wait to use the x264 source. I think you just saved my edit!

Okay. So I'm a noob trying NewsRover as my newsgroup software, and is it supposed to be this difficult to find content?

I've got the a.b. correct, but when I "get new message bodies" and have let it build for a while, I can't seem to get to the actual messages. Have I overloaded ny system with the 2 million messages that the service has retrieved?

Should I try yet anothe piece of software (I've tried 2 or 3 through this point)?

read the instructions ;-)

heh... I have no idea about that stuff...

I used to download the headers, but have since stopped this now, as it more often that not seems a pointless task. What I do instead - and I think this should benefit you too - is to visit http://www.binsearch.info and have a look what it has to offer. You can either browse the newsgroups themselves, or indeed if you know what you are looking for then have a search.

In your case - go to the 'advanced search' and select and type hdtv.x264 into the 'newsgroup' field - which should then let you select the group to be searched. Now type Star Wars as the query to be searched, and maybe set the 'maximum age of post' to about 70 days or so. And Voila you will find all the Star Wars HD rips listed. Download and run the .nzb file for the one you wish.

The only prob with this is whether your ISP allows newsgroup access, and if so what groups and how long the retention is. I use Astraweb (http://news.astraweb.com) which allows me to purchase 90GB of downloads for $25 - (approx £13) and this normally lasts me a while as it's a pay by download plan. Their retention is currently 122+ days.

I use Grabit as my newsreader - this does the job (for me) perfectly - it's also free and is available to download from http://www.shemes.com

I hope this possibly helps!
