I was looking at this set the other day. It looks pretty good. (take notice George) Does anyone know what the differences are between the 3 versions of the film? There is the Theatrical version, the Special Edition and the Director's cut with only a matter of minutes difference between the three. I own the 2001 2-disc director's cut DVD release. Is this new set worth it? Any input?

I would like to add that the Bluray set is FUCKING FANTASTIC,looks and sounds friggin great!

and I like the version marker to,it lets you see the differences between the cuts,very very nice set,and it was only $5 more than the standard DVD set.
and if you get it at Walmart,you get an exclusive,the Motion Picture Soundtrack,like I said, very nice set.

Makes me want to make a super-duper extended cut with all the scenes from the different editions ... like they did on ABC in the 80s.

Suprisingly, I have never seen Close Encounters. I may rent this set cause it looks great, for fans that love this film, what version do you prefer?

The directors cut is still the best. It has all the improvements of the special edition but none of the drawbacks (ie stupid inside the mothership stuff).

The 2001 edition that was the original 1977 realise which looks good and sounds good in Dolby 5.1 AKA 70mm six-track Dolby stereo.

Only the originals from the 70mm six-track Dolby stereo Dolby format 42 will sound better on DVD.
