I've always assumed he was vocalising the sound, perhaps with augmentation from the force. I'm sure he has his hands up to his mouth like he's doing an owl call, though it's a long time since I've watched any of the OT.

And I thought the original OT calling sound was better than the 2004 rendition, I assume because I grew up with the original versions. Nostalgia is powerful, don't mess with it! (Waaay too late)
