No idea, but an interesting question I'd like to hear opinions on. I don't think there's a definitive answer unless you want to go to the novelisation and regard that as fact. Whatever that may be I've never read it.

For many years as a kid I always thought that sound/shriek was part of the score.

The same way in horror movies where there is a loud boom in the score after a lull to try to scare you.

I'm not going to mention how the SE noise sucks ass. Oh wait.........
