Wow, thanks for sharing.

Where is the rest of this book? And is the rest of the 1st draft of TPM also less screwed up than the movie?

Coincidentally, I just posted an article on the rough draft of TPM.

The Beginning - A Look at the Rough Draft of Episode I

To answer your question, yes, its much less screwed up than the film. Definitly imperfect but I would have rather had this version filmed than what we got.

That could have made for a much better movie! Why George, why?

You have seen this screenshot, right?

That is from the rough cut from the doc "The Beginning", correct?
Author
Time
IIRC, it was the first frame of Empire of Dreams. It was only on the first frame.
Author
Time
Huh? Having just watched "The Beginning", that shot occurs around the one hour mark of the program as George Lucas screens the rough cut of Episode I in 1998 which still carried that title. What exactly do you mean?
Author
Time
I don't have it here to check, but it is (iirc) the first frame of that documentary and it was only there for the one frame. The next frames are black before the program fades in.
Author
Time
Hmm, must have ended up in there by some mistake I guess. But it comes from "The Beginning," the making-of doc.

I added some pre-production artwork from the first draft as well.

I love these original costumes. Like Luke's in ROTJ. I guess thats why Lucas tells Mark Hamill during his 1982 costume fitting that his new black costume is "Jedi-like." All that stuff about it symbolising Luke going to the darkside is just coincidental--it was actually supposed to show the opposite.

I remembered one more:

C-3PO and R2-D2 would be the only characters to appear in all 9 films. (With the six we have, this isn't true because Anakin/Vader & Obi-Wan (if ghosts count) are also in all 6)

Zombie, regarding the mandalorians... I don't know where this came from originally, but I know I've seen it several places.

Bill Slavicsek's Second Edition of the Guide to the Star Wars Universe says:

Mandalore Warriors
The Mandalore Warriors were defeated by the Jedi Knights during the Clone Wars [ESB]

That must be from the Glut novelization.

Page 88 of "The Star Wars Trilogy Sourcebook" (West End Games) says about Boba Fett:
"...armored suit similar to those favoured by a group of warriors from the Mandalore system who were defeated by the Jedi Knights during the Clone Wars."
Page 140 of the Star Wars Sourcebook 2nd Edition has the same thing word for word.

'The Bpfassh' entry in the Guide mentions some Clone Wars history (involving the Dagobah (the cave, methinks)) but I think that's mostly from Heir to the Empire.

Speaking of which... we need another thread entitled: How did Tim Zahn envision the Prequels/Clone Wars? That had me intrigued reading his books.

xhoznzi

P.S. I know the above references aren't precisely "canon" but they were obviously referring to something that people had been thinking was part of the Clone War history.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who remembers that quote.

Back in the mid 1980's I went to one of Creation's Star Trek / Comic Book Conventions and found at a dealers table a copy of what was being described as a "Story Treatment" for the next "Star Wars" project. I knew that it was not anything official, but being hungry for anything "Star Wars" at that time, I gave up $5 and began to eat it up... I thought it would have made a good movie at the time. I've found it here on the internet, so here is a link to it... Some of you may find it enjoyable.

STAR WARS III: FALL OF THE REPUBLIC
Story Treatment By John L. Flynn

FADE IN:

MAIN AND CREDIT TITLES SUPERIMPOSED ON THE
BLACK OF OUTER SPACE -- pinpointed with
piercing stars, several moons, a planet,
and a bright-colored nebulae. As TITLES end --

The following is related in the story, roll-up
format:

Long ago, in a galaxy far, far away, the Old Republic was
crumbling away, rotting from the corruption and treachery
within. Power-hungry technocrats and wealthy bureaucrats
maneuvered and bribed their way into office, while one am-
bitious senator plotted to destroy the Jedi and rule the
galaxy.

Hoping to restore virtue and the remembered glory of the
Republic, the High Council of Senators dispatched the Jedi
Knights - protectorate of justice in the galaxy - on a
quest to retrieve the lost Kaiburr Crystal. They believed
that the small diamond-like object (which intensified the
power of the Force) would unite the disaffected among the
people and would destroy the corruption around them.

However, within their Council, the evil Senator Palpatine
had other traitorous designs. Foreseeing that the Crystal
would secure his position as Emperor, Palpatine deceived one
of the Jedi Knights and sent him to acquire the Crystal.

Mandlorian is purely EU stuff as far as my research shows. Donald Glut's novelisation states that Boba Fett wore the armor of a group of warriors defeated by the Jedi during the clone wars, or words to that effect, and Bantha Tracks goes into detail about how Fett was a member of the Imperial Shocktroopers who waged war on the galaxy but were defeated by the Jedi.

In the 1990's--I believe it was--EU sort of re-made this plot, by having them be "Mandalorian" warriors, not "Imperial Shocktroopers", who came from the planet Mandalore and waged war on the galaxy. EU sourcebooks are based on this version but the original one is a bit different.

EU or Lucas/Glut... Either way, it was something that shaped my preconceptions about the PT. That's my point, really.

Really, thats all we knew. The only additional specifics is in relation to the Clone War--not Mandolorians but "Imperial Shocktroopers." These were super-troopers of a distant origin, of which Boba Fett was a part of, who fought a war called the Clone War, which the Jedi were involved in, but were defeated by the Jedi.

Here's exactly from the novelisation: "[Boba Fett] was dressed in a weapon-covered, armored spacesuit, the kind worn by a group of evil warriors defeated by the Jedi Knights during the Clone Wars."

I don't care for the John Flynn story treatment. He's also the one to start the whole Obi-Wan = OB1 tripe. *Gasp!* He's a clone! I never liked the idea of cloning Jedi as a story element.
