I remember you saying the project files were all loosless but I didn't know if you were going to compress the files before you converted them to mpeg 2. So everything stays looseless until it's compressed to mpeg 2, no compressing before that?

The 2004 PAL DVD-9 is converted to Lossless avi and it remains that way until it is finished and ready to convert back to MPEG2 so no other compression method in between so the video image remains as good as possible

So you've been using the Logaryth/Logarith codec to render everything, including rendering all your footage to switch between your NLE and After Effects? I had been meaning to ask how you were keeping raw video quality up while switching between applications.

I'd like to also offer my congratulations on achieving so much over the past few weeks. It's really exciting!

P.S. Thanks for responding to my previous AE question -- I hadn't gotten a chance to respond and thank you earlier. I'm not sure whether you fully answered my question, but I'll leave that for another time (it's late, and I have some editing of my own to do . . .)

I saw Alice Cooper at the North Dakota State Fair. First good concert they've had there in years. I felt betrayed though when a good fourth of the people there left after Ted Nugent. I mean, honestly... Cooper totally mopped the stage with Nugent's arse. Some people...

Anyway, I agree that DVD-9 is the way to go (although if the difference really is negligible, maybe making both available wouldn't hurt just to be fair)
With any other movie I wouldn't care but, this being Star Wars and all, it deserves the best presentation possible.

Sounds like one hell of an awesome project adywan you are working on. A few questions tho:

A) Will there be a fix to the countdown clock shown during the final Death Star battle sequence at the end? Numerous times we're told "5 minutes" when the counter on screen shows something else?

B) Any chance any of the pics/vids/etc can be placed in the first post of this thread? With there being so many posts I don't know where to look to see what kind of goodies have been posted.

Once again sounds like great stuff. Looking forward to watching this one for sure.

Hey I just found this site and man is it amazing. I cannot believe how people are complaining that he is ruining the movie. He is making it better. I do not want to bug him , but if anyone else can post some clips besides the trailers please let me know. With so little going on in the Star Wars universe this is a nice breath of fresh air. Keep up the good work.

I think most of the links will be dead by now apart from probably the trailers. It wouldn't be worth me re-posting the clips (to be honest i have lost track of what i have actually posted) but i may be posting a new clip pretty soon.

Now onto the edit:
i've just completed the new sequence for the death star battle. i'm really happy with how it turned out and really fleshed out the TIE battle now. But i have hit a major problem. I have been trying for the past couple of days to try and find some music that will fit this sequence and have so far hit a brick wall. everything i have tried so far just doesn't work along side the original music. I think the greatest problem i'm having is that i am so use to the music in its original form that any new addition spliced into it is never going to sound right to my ears. The PT music is really out of the question because the feel of most of Williams' music for this trilogy is so different than the OT and i also want to only use Williams' music. So i now have a dilemma: if i can't sort out the music for this sequence then it will have to be relegated to the deleted scenes section, which after the months of work i have put into this section would be a great shame, but i'm not giving up just yet.

thats too bad you cannot use the footage. I will be looking forward to the new clip and the future release of the final product. There are so many ideas I have for what could be done, but they are the kind of ideas that I am pretty sure cannot be done. Great job so far!

This pic is an idea i had a while ago. I know it cannot be done, but it would look cool.pic

Also would you be able to add luke's lightsaber to this scene. I am not sure to what extent you can do things so I thought I would throw this idea out there.

Adywan, you might want to contact GoodMusician. He's a bonafide John Williams nut (and I mean that in a good way). I know he's done a lot of work in recreating and restoring the soundtracks.

Yea, I have to say I think ErikStormtrooper is onto something there. There are few people on this forum that seem to understand the relationship between music and footage as well as GoodMusician. Using him as a second pair of eyes might just do the trick. And I'm sure he'd be cool enough to keep anything you want hidden from the general public secret until you're able to get the release finished.

Ady, could you not simply loop the score in places? Perhaps insert silences to stretch out the running time? In terms of looping the music, I'm thinking something along the lines of the background music in the game Dark Forces - it's a fairly continuous loop of OT music, some of which I believe is from the Death Star battle sequence.

As big a fan as I am of John Williams, and as much as I agree the score is a huge part of the film, I personally would like to see the clip left in. Perhaps I don't fully understand the problem, though...

I wouldn't discount the possibility of using a bit of music from somewhere in the PT just because it's from the PT, or leaving a section musicless. Some of the greatest action scenes have no music; the chariot race in Ben-Hur is the most obvious to me, and of course they made the same choice for most of the pod race in The Phantom Menace. Cueing the music part way through a sequence (like they did in the pod race) is an excellent way to heighten the excitement. If you can't find appropriate music, please don't cut the sequence.

Have you considered any of the music from the Shadows of the Empire CD? I know it's not Williams (it's Joel McNeely who also did some young Indy music)

I agree that sometimes a section of action without music can be very compelling. I think it would be very cool to have part of the battle without music if you just can't find anything to use. Then again, I don't have the luxury of seeing the workflow like you do, Ady. I'm yelling in the wind from my vantage point. It's different in the trenches.

Is there any way you can pull from the end space battle in Return of the Jedi - the section where they reference the Falcon/TIE attack or some other sequence?

I know he has referenced it a bit with some well placed ROTJ footage.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. It looks like i may have nailed it. i have added a couple of extra shots and gone through all the star wars soundtracks and i have found a few pieces that may fit.

unfortunately i don't have that CD or have ever heard the music, which is a shame because any extra avenues to go down at this stage would be great.

You misunderstood what i meant when i said about not using the PT music. The main reason is that the style is a lot different from that of the OT and does sound out of place when used. I have tried various cues from the PT but it really doesn't sound right. i have also tried to have the scene with no music but that doesn't work also. i'm going to stick at it because i think this scene will really bring the Death Star TIE battle into the new century.
