That's a pretty good movie as well: Rescue from Gilligan's Island. Although if I were them, the first thing I would have done upon being rescued is list the names of all the jackasses who had managed to find the island and then strand us and never mention us to anybody.

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

Haha, yeah that is so true. If they could even remember all their names. Seems like somebody found them just about every other episode, then abandoned them without telling anyone for some reason or another. Man, the world of Gilligan's Island is full of a lot of jerks. Of course the alternative would have been no guest stars.

Yes like I really enjoyed the Harlem Globetrotters.

Well, the Globetrotters didn't show up until Castaways from Gilligan's Island, after they'd already been rescued and turned the island into a resort, so they don't really fit into the category of "assholes who discovered them and left them for dead."

EDIT: But off the top of my head, the biggest jerks I think was that Beatles wannabe band (I can't even remember their name) who were going to rescue them until the girls put on a concert, and they suddenly got afraid of the competition and took off! Man, those people suck!

Getting back on topic sort of, I Am Legend, though it is not a "fantasy" novel as we usually think of fantasy these days, or in the sense all the other movies mentioned in this thread have been, it does contain fantasy elements. It is coming out on December 14th. It fits more in the "survival horror" genre, though I hesitate to categorize it as horror since it is so much more than that. A story about the last man on earth kind of fits the definition of fantasy. It is one of my absolute fovorite books. The new trailer for this was just released a week ago or so. The more footage from it I see, the more excited about it I get. This is a film I will be seeing on opening night. Here are the trailers on youtube, if you are only going to watch on of them, watch the very last one.

Looks awesome, but I would like to see a comedy version staring Bruce Campbell.

How many horror comedys staring Bruce Campbell do you wan't? Actually if they were to make a sequel to Army of Darkness, they could continue off of the "I slept too long" ending where he wakes up far into the future, and have a similiar last survivor sort of story. No that you mention it, it would be a fun film having Bruce running around cutting up vampires via chainsaw by night, searching for other survivors by day and spending years reading studying science text books so he can solve the myster of the germ and make a cure.

Anyway Sean, you seem to be into reading, I highly recommend the book I Am Legend. It is by a guy named Richard Matheson and your library will probably have it, it is a short book and a quick read, it is a lot better than the movie will be, and you could always use your imagination to imagine Bruce Campbell in the role. Which would be interesting. I ought to read the book again and try that.

i am legend is a remake of the movie the omega man but more based on the book right?

the last movie based on the book had charlton heston as the hero.

by the way the omega man and i am legend is classified as science fiction.

the kickass mystic ninjas did a podcast on it.

Yeah, Omega Man would definately fit into the campy science fiction category. And yes it is based off the book I Am Legend, there was also another movie based off the book called The Last Man on Earth, and it was much more faithful to the book with the major exception of the infected being zombies instead of vampires. Omega Man really had very little in common with the source material other than a few major plot points. The book would generally be categorized as horror, not sci-fi. In fact, the vampires are not even true demonic undead vampires, but infected people who once infected by some ancient germ take on the characteristics of vampires. Matheson, through the main character in the book makes an atempt to demythologize the vampire and rationalize it scientifically. The vampires are actually only a side plot in the novel, the true antagonst of the book is loneliness as the main character finds himself the unfortunate lone survivor of a world wide pleague, and has to cope with the reality of being the last man on earth. Sure it is a stretch to call this a fantasy novel, mostly I just didn't feel like starting a new thread and figured this one would do well enough, but the novel does have some elements common to a lot of fantasy stories, such as the character finding himself in a new world filled with strange, frightening and dangerous beasts. The weight of the survival of the human race resting on the main characters shoulders, as he never really gives up hope in discovering a way to cure the infected. If the story were to take place in medieval times, it would probably pass as fantasy without too many people questioning it.

On the book I Am Legend or the film The Omega Man?

The Omega Man is a fun to watch movie, I have liked it for a long time, but it is just plain campy. It really doesn't do the book any services, and it is unfortunate that many people on the internet are going around calling this new film a remake of The Omega Man. The Omega Man was VERY loosely based off the novel, it took a few ideas from it and left the rest. The movie is much closer to the original ideas of the novel, though still a long ways off, the new movie actually follows the plotline of the book to a good degree, while taking a lot of liberties and adding large chunks here and there. Omega Man took liberties on every single aspect of the story, save for the name of the protagonist. The Omega Man was so different they probably could have gotten away without paying any royalties to the writer of the book.

i think the podcast drew comparisons between the film and the book and was quite good actually.

some of the members also produce an awesome podcast called slice of sci fi.

Wizard's First Rule is not the only fantasy novel being made for the small screen. We also have Stephen King and Peter Straub's The Talisman is being adapted for TNT with Steven Spielberg and Kathleen Kennedy producing. I am expecting it to be good.

So The Golden Compass is coming out soon and it looks cool. Anyone going to see it? You all know why I want to see it but I know most of you are open to that kind of stuff.
