the laserdisc release in the usa and japan was a 5.1 mix you needed a rf out and the equipment to get it i think.

the uk obviously never got anything beyond stereo releases as far as i remember 2.0 dolby.

you'd have to ask moth3r he is the uk laserdisc go to guy for star wars.

as much as i disparage the 1997 and the 2004 i own them and the 2006 gout, so i'm guilty as charged. lol.

i got my gkar set through a trade with rikter. not sure if he still has them on his hard disc or can copy them for people who ask nicely. and postage and shipping or whatnot, as the rules of the site apply.

the best ntsc release was the 2000 japan boxset with the behind the scenes of episode II clip. too bad they have hard subs. i only own the us release, i do have a pretty incomplete star wars laserdisc collection.

the 1997 vhs tapes and laserdiscs came from a digital source which was obviously transfered to analogue. tape or laserdisc with digital sound. the digital video broadcasts were carried on both analogue and digital stations in europe and the netherlands . the digital one is what people obviously want. supposedly canal plus did a broadcast in france that was all in english included the titles and subs this is the TB release. the german broadcast was in german subs and in english. which is weird since each country got their own repective dub for the special editions as well as the originals.

now we get to the other subject aspect ratio the laserdiscs and widescreen vhs are letterbox. not sure if the dvb broadcasts were 2:35:1 anamorhpic or 4:3 letterbox . the set i have of gkar is anamorphic i think but i might have been stretched to anamorphic by the dvd creator, unless the person could be contacted to see whether or not it was oar. oh shit i just remembered that the gkar is slighly cropped might be 1:78:1 or some shit.

the gkar has a sharper picture than any laserdisc sourced dvd being pal and not ntsc but it plays back at pal speed so unless you enjoy pal speedup it is crap. plus their is some blockiness in the image in some areas from compression, maybe. i obviously cannot say whether it is in the raw capped broadcast or not.
