I couldn't help but think "fan edit" when I saw the movie, too. Sounds like a cool project. I agree BIG TIME with your attempt to tone done Frenzy's voice. Good call on the Bumblebee whizzing scene, too.

I'm actually debating on doing an edit of this as well (depending on whether or not I have the time to work on it).

Brimley: Regarding changing Sam's Ebay name, the only real way I could see that working with Barricade is to actually re-dub the character (which depends on how much the voices could be edited from the soundtrack)

The point of having it be "ladiesman" is to portray his character as a bit pathetic, but there are enough instances of that. Changing it to "Spike" softens that edge a bit AND gives a nice shout out to the 80's fans without going down the cheese road. Just matte the new text on the screen when you see the eBay listing, and then find some clip from the 80's of Cullen saying "Spike" (that can't be THAT hard), pitch shift it a little and drop it over "ladies man" and you've got it! The Optimus lip movements are so crappy, I don't think anyone will notice the sync issues...

And just a general action scene request...I had no idea what was going on in most of the fights. Whatever you can do to help make these make more sense would be greatly appreciated. What a mess!

Seems like a hell of a lot of work just to do a namedrop.

I kinda like the scenes where the Ts identify him as "ladiesmanblahblahblah"...kind of a fun poke at the pseudonyms we take on without giving much thought to them.

I thought that part was funny (barricade yelling at sam/spike).

It IS a lot of work...but then again, so are a lot of fan edits! If I cared enough, I would do it myself, but my X3 edit is taking most of my free time these days...that and catching up on Smallville and possible job changes. I'm getting a headache just thinking about it!

I love this project idea!

According to the movie/prequel comics continuity, Megatron and Optimus were brothers ruling Cybertron. And Frenzy was a spaz!

Still plugging along. I should have a rough cut in a few weeks.

Thanks! If I could just sit at home all day, I would be done a little quicker, but I have one of those pesky jobs.

Moving along at a decent pace now. The pissing scene was a pain to cut, and took me a few hours to make decent. I'm just going to have to pretend that they're scared and sweating, not covered in alien robot "piss". Most of the other cuts have been relatively easy. I'm really enjoying the scenes as I've cut them, can't wait to see it all together. Most of the cuts are pacing cuts, or cheese-removal cuts. I'm hoping that I can get the soundtrack adjusted to my liking once I've got the video cut. Not sure if I can figure out how to get it back to a 5.1 mix anytime soon. This shit is addictive!

I'm going to want to see this edit because I HATED this film so much and did not want to hate it...

The only reason I saw it was because one of my best friends made the life size full scale model of one of the main robots used in filming. Yes, it was not 100% CGI, but close to it. You don't know how hard it was for me not to be able to post photos from his workshop last year!

The best shot I have from his Transformers work is poster size, and I'll try to scan that in today, I'll also ask the modeler if he has some other stuff I can post for you guys... I'm not sure if he is under contract to do the second film, or if he has to keep quiet. This guy does great work. He also does work for some Las Vegas theme hotels, and did a number of the huge stone like figures outside the Warner Brothers store in New York City. His wife worked on the sand worm models in 1985's DUNE, and they did the under sea cliff face in The Abyss. It's so kewl to visit them at there place in L.A. when I'm out there. They HATE what CGI has done to there art and business, but they still find kewl jobs on films now and then.

Bay is actually pretty good about using real model work and real world items where it's possible. Do you think Lucas would have actually made a full scale Bumblebee and Frenzy? There wasn't one real life clone trooper suit made for filming, to my knowledge.

I would love to see what you have. The full size model you speak of, was the first leaked image I saw for the movie.

wow. this edit sounds like it has MAJOR potential.

I watched the DVD (didn't get a chance to see it in the theatre) and thought - that was OK but could have been SO much more.

This production model is 30 feet tall!

The original photo is huge, and poster size. I tried to piece 8 scans together.
I would have done a better job if I had the time...

this sounds very exciting. I am the biggest fan ever of the G1 TV series and transformers in general. I loved the movie which surpassed all of my expectations though it does have it's problems which everyone has mentioned. My biggest dislike would have to be the cybertronian language. It sounds too organic. I would replace all cybertronian language with more mechanical or electronic noises (resonant tones and static perhaps?). Also when/if you do the cartoon edit you must include megatron's line "I'll rip out your optics!" from the optimus/megatron fight in the animated movie as this is my favourite line and have no idea why michael bay didn't include it in the big fight!

Any opinions on the Wolverine/Freddy Krueger joke? I'm on the fence as to whether it's funny enough to leave in.

I'd leave it. It ties into a fanboy injoke in that Wolverine is a Marvel character as were the Transformers

I still can't decide. I think I'll wait until I can watch the whole rough cut to see if it doesn't fit his (newly trimmed) character.

Any feelings on the motorcyle under blackout scene? I think I'll just trim it up, rather than get rid of it entirely. This last quarter of the movie is moving a lot quicker.

PLEASE cut out the line "Your a soldier now!" during the last battle. That was just so stupid.

Well, I had my first cut done, but I'm having a major problem with the audio. When I try to play it back in womble, or the exported file, there is a 10 minute section where the sound turns into what sounds like a CD skipping really fast. Not sure how to fix this.

OK, I finished the first cut, and was quite happy with the way it came out. Unfortunately, Womble has decided it doesn't like my cut, and has ruined the audio in the second half of the movie, and has made some jumpy cuts. I've tried to fix it, but it looks to be lost. I learned some little things on the first cut, and I noticed some missed extra frames, so I think I'll just keep this as a reference, and start over.

I'm planning on doing a trilogy of cuts at this point:
The first cut will be the soft cut. I will basically remove as much of what I deem offensive as is possible, without getting into reconstructing the entire soundtrack, and without creating any holes in the plot

The second cut will be the hard cut. It'll be a while for this one, as I'm going to do some extensive rebuilding of the soundtrack, to try and eliminate the nu-rock songs, and to remove even more of the filler human scenes.

The third cut will be the G1 cut. This one will take me forever. I want to just do it for fun, but it probably won't be much fun. Going to cut in the original voices, a few of the old songs, mainly from the TV show, not so much the movie and just rework it as a more first generation Transformers movie.

I hope to have the first cut done in the next few weeks. At that point I'd like to send a couple copies out for people to critique.

I'm actually pretty happy with the movie - probably one of the few but your third idea interests me.

If your main aim is for a television style feel in terms of a G1 cut, what about reworking it into something of a 'pilot episode' for a live action series in the G1 style, sort of like what was done [by a fan, Jack Marshall] with Star trek 5 as a pilot for cancelled follow up series [to star trek TOS]. If you haven't seen this i'd recommend it - if only as a really good guide as to break of a film into distinct 'acts'. Maybe you could have the classic scene transition of the autobot logo flipping to the decepticon or vice versa - using the theatrical style brushed metal logos...

Actualy I'd be tempted to work on this idea myself. What are your thoughts?

While discussing the movie with a friend he said "it needs more star scream", Maybe you could achieve this by simply having him be more vocal, with that classic whiny voice...

In the end it's your edit, I'm just putting it out there. When you are ready I'd love to review it for you and give you feedback.

I'm pretty happy with the movie too. I just think it needs a little cleaning up. There are some scenes in particular where I'm cutting out maybe a dozen frames, because the action actually hesitates too long, which is weird because usually Bay moves things right along (aside from the slow-mo shots). I'm definitely (not on the first cut at least) cutting the crap out of the movie. I had maybe 60-70 cuts when I got done the first time, but they were all minor. Just getting rid of some of the more obvious cheesy humor.

As far as the G1 cut goes, I am definitely going to add more starscream in there. He gets a good amount of screen time, so it wouldn't be hard to just insert his voice in there. Luckily, the original cartoon doesn't always have the soundtrack going, so I should be able to find some good, fitting dialogue. The hard part is going to be going through 4 seasons of material, to find all the voices and lines that I want. I'm planning on making it very obvious that Starscream was responsible for at least some of the missiles hitting megatron at the end. Not sure if I want to make it like the G1 cartoon or the G1 movie, but I like your idea of using the brushed metal logos for the scene transition. I would definitely have to find someone with skills to make that part. If you were going to make a cut like that, I would definitely be in to helping you with ideas and material.

I'm 8 cuts into my do-over of the first cut, and I realize now that I learned a lot from that first cut. I'm kind of glad that it screwed up now. It just better not happen again!!!
