Idea: 'Cheers' - Seasons 9-11 preservation?

It has been widely reported–or at least widely rumored–that sales of Cheers Season 8 on DVD were so abysmal (thanks Kirstie Alley) that Paramount is no longer going to release the remaining seasons. It’s been over a year since season 8 appeared, and while the last season of Frasier is on the calendar for a Christmastime release, there’s been no action on season 9 of Cheers.

So I was wondering if there was any interest in preserving Cheers seasons 9-11 on DVD. They’re no longer on in syndication everywhere, so it may be tough to acquire the episodes. (I haven’t even found AVI files floating around.)

Yes, seasons 9 and 10 in particular were subpar, but included important episodes like the 200th episode celebration (“Cliff Claven according to Cliff Claven would be the wingnut that holds civilization together. According to me, he’d just be a winged nut.”), two Bar Wars episodes with Gary, an appearance by Kevin McHale, Henri’s competition with Sam, the marriage of Woody and Kelly, Robin’s return with the hidden treasure in Cheers, Norm’s job as a beer taster, and . . . okay, so clearly enough episodes to make it worthy of preservation. Plus, the finale (and episodes leading up to it) were as good as most of the older episodes, as well as an essential piece of television history.

“Sorry, we’re closed.”

Anyone have any thoughts or interest in doing this? It’s not on in my area, which is what led me to panic that these episodes may disappear.

The general consensus is that the Rebecca episodes are inferior, by and large, to the Diane episodes. There are some exceptions (Cry Hard, for instance) but I think that's a fair assessment. Either way, sales of the Rebecca seasons were below the Diane seasons, and Paramount was displeased.

Given the lack of bonus features on the DVDs, though, I can't imagine there's not a profit margin to slap some episodes on discs and recycle the same artwork they've used.

I hate it when the studios start to release complete season sets of a series, then stop part way. They started to release the classic western Have Gun, Will Travel on DVD, and so far have only released the first 3 out of 6. But its been a year or more since the last season was released, and it doesn't look like the rest will get released. Maybe someday they'll finish some of these releases up.

One of the best shows of the 80's, Night Court, only got a season 1 release. We're still waiting for season 2. Amazon even put up a page for season 2 to put a fire under WB's rear end, but nothing has happened yet.

Absolutely true. My only saving grace regarding Night Court is that I didn't dump my whole tape collection. When they did Cheers season 6, I figured they would see it through to the end, and dumped my VHS copies of the episodes.

The bastards. You'd think at the very least they could put them online somewhere for download. I'd pay to download them digitally, and there would be so little cost to them.

Oh... i thought maybe Kirstie alley was attempting to block the release.

I actually love the later seasons. Probably because I didnt start watching cheers until 87 or so. I have seen every episode, and love them all.

Well, it's still Cheers, so it's not like it's unfunny!

I actually preferred Rebecca to Diane. Diane was a perfect fit for Frasier, until Frasier started thinking again. *LOL*
