I am sure Lucas wants more money, but I think this is probably closest to the point: Lucas demands control, and that is the one thing networks hate to surrender. Read the history of just about any television series and you will find all sorts of instances of network "meddling" with the direction of a series.

The solution, as has been effective on several series, is to find someone the network can delegate, full-time, to that show who is agreeable to the show's producer.
