It has been widely reported–or at least widely rumored–that sales of Cheers Season 8 on DVD were so abysmal (thanks Kirstie Alley) that Paramount is no longer going to release the remaining seasons. It’s been over a year since season 8 appeared, and while the last season of Frasier is on the calendar for a Christmastime release, there’s been no action on season 9 of Cheers.
So I was wondering if there was any interest in preserving Cheers seasons 9-11 on DVD. They’re no longer on in syndication everywhere, so it may be tough to acquire the episodes. (I haven’t even found AVI files floating around.)
Yes, seasons 9 and 10 in particular were subpar, but included important episodes like the 200th episode celebration (“Cliff Claven according to Cliff Claven would be the wingnut that holds civilization together. According to me, he’d just be a winged nut.”), two Bar Wars episodes with Gary, an appearance by Kevin McHale, Henri’s competition with Sam, the marriage of Woody and Kelly, Robin’s return with the hidden treasure in Cheers, Norm’s job as a beer taster, and . . . okay, so clearly enough episodes to make it worthy of preservation. Plus, the finale (and episodes leading up to it) were as good as most of the older episodes, as well as an essential piece of television history.
“Sorry, we’re closed.”
Anyone have any thoughts or interest in doing this? It’s not on in my area, which is what led me to panic that these episodes may disappear.
