Info & Info Wanted: A Few other Extended TV Cuts of Films...

Time
 (Edited)

I was thinking of a few other movies I remember seeing or hearing about that have had extended TV cuts, sorry if these have been brought up before.

  • Airplane! (Although it appears most if not all of the scenes are on the latest DVD release)
  • Airplane II
  • Coneheads
  • Fast Times at Ridgemont High
  • Gremlins (I believe only one new scene was added to some TV broadcasts)

Are any of these currently being worked on?

P.S. I also heard there’s a DVD version of Dumb and Dumber that includes a deleted scene of Lloyd returning to the little old lady after getting change and she’s gone.

I've got the Fast Times DVD, supposedly it was made by a pro and includes ALL the tv scenes including ones you won;t ever see today apparently. Could be upgraded to a new composite possibly.

Molto, I'd sure like to get a look at that cut of Fast Times. Any chance you'd be interested in some sort of trade?

MovieDude81,

There is a DVD of DUMB & DUMBER where Lloyd returns to find the old lady gone. You'll have to get it from Holland though...it's the ONLY one with it there. I own the R1 version of the UNCUT version...and surprise! That scene is the only scene to NOT be integrated back into the film.

The TV version of DUMB & DUMBER also includes that scene. I remember because the first time I saw it I though "Hey! That was funny and they left it out of the theatrical version!"

Best Regards,

Smokey And The Bandit 3 has an alternate TV version that features a 5 minute cameo by Burt Reynolds, instead of the 90 seconds present in the theatrical cut. It doesn't excuse the fact that the film blows, but still.

Have you ever heard that part 3 was apparently filmed first with Gleason playing the Bandit? But it sucked so bad they refilmed almost the whole movie. Apparenlty his estate has it and it probably won't ever see the light of day.

That I heard.

I would also direct you to this guy, who's a trader with lots of TV versions. That's quite a comprehensive list.

From IMDB:
The NBC TV version adds one scene deleted from the original film, where Billy and Kate discover Gerald locked in the bank vault after the Gremlin rampage.

I believe it's on the dvd as a separate delete scene.

Same Make. Same Model. New Mission.

From IMDB:
# CBS edited 12 minutes from this film for its 1986 network television premiere.

# In the theatrical version the cook is listening to Stevie Wonder's "Superstition". Because Universal did not secure rights for the home video release, the song was replaced. However, for more recent releases, Universal was able to use "Superstition" because they relicensed the song.

# The American syndicated televison version features:

* A voiceover for title card reading "Antarctica, 1982".
* A voiceover added and film re-cut introducing each character and providing their back stories.

# The version broadcast on television in the eighties ended with a few shots of a dog running, stopping to look around and heading off into the distance, leading the spectator to believe the Thing had survived. Also, the scene where a man's head tears itself apart from his body, grows legs and eyes and runs off, was cut.

# According to "The Thing: Terror Takes Shape" documentary on the The Thing DVD, an alternative ending was shot. In this ending, Kurt Russell's character was rescued and was in a doctor's office. His blood had been sampled, and he was not infected. Carpenter liked the story as he had told it and decided against using this ending.

# The television broadcast version of The Thing sometimes has an unknown person narrate the beginning of the film. He introduces all of the characters as they appear and gives a brief blurb about their goals/reasons for being there. At the end of the film, the narrator returns once more to deliver a haunting speech, and then a shot of the Huskie running away from the burning base is shown. This version often appears on TNT or TBS. This version also has so much of the gore edited out that originally deleted scenes are used as time fillers to extend existing scenes.

# The American syndicated television version has a slightly extended version of the scene where outside in the tractor Macready and Fuchs secretly discuss Blair's sanity. In the extended version Fuchs remarks that while Blair may be losing his mind he is still a brilliant scientist and his rantings should not be totally dismissed.

Scarface has a silly scene where he's walking a dog

6th sense has an extended ending that doesn't work (I think it's on the DVD special features)

I own the TV version of the thing. Recorded from TBS or TNT a few years ago. Its On VHS is SP mode. I can dupe it if anyone needs. I love the film, so I own it as a novelty, but in my opinion, the tv version sucks. The narration is just goofy.

I finally got S.O.S Titanic the Extended TV cut.

I remember watching it on TV when I was a kid and finally here it is. lol!! I only had to wait over 25 years......

The Extended Cut was only shown once and then never again - sort of like the Extneded cut of King Kong (76 Version) - 1977 TV Cut, Once and poof!!

Remember, Highlander, you’ve both still got your full measure of life. Use it well, and your future will be glorious.
