Excellent and subtle work from one of our resident masters. By the way, Darth Editous, as you are one of the other resident editing masters in these parts, would you mind expanding on your mention about the scale of the stars in the shot. I am techno-curious about this and, as a former filmmaker, would like to learn more.
Thanks to both of you,

Just watched the clip and I thought everything played off perfectly. The only thing I wish you could have done was give Vader and his other 2 ties some different pacing, and a bit of independant rotation as they fly out of the death star hanger. Vader should lead off first, and the other ties should follow behind, not all at the same time with the same movement. I realise the shot is really short but what the hey, try it out and see how it work's.

I haven't done anything to the speed in that shot i just banked the TIEs slightly. Don't forget the Falcon was reversing out of the docking bay so it would have been slower.

However I do see what Darth Editous was trying to say about the starfield at the start of the shot.
As the camera begins to angle towards the trench the starfield remains locked with the Death star and does not pan indepently.
Thanks.

It's similar to the problem with the view out of the escape pod window at the beginning of ANH. The Star Destroyer is receding into the distance, but so are the stars - but they should be effectively infinitely distant and shouldn't recede.
The effect in the trench shot is done by zooming into a static image (and very effectively, too, both originally and now). This zooms in on the stars as well, but they should stay at a constant scale.

I had the same feeling. Maybe the ships look a little too flat, like cutouts sliding across a background... but I'm not sure what you could do about it short of modeling the ships in CG, which I don't think would be worth the effort for such a brief shot.

The shot in the clip are new Y-wings taken from an ILM model shot. The original ones were so flat and grey they looked like cardboard cut-outs. this shot is so short it wouldn't be worth all the work to create CG ships. i think the new shots works well anyway and doesn't look like cutouts.

Adywan, can I make a suggestion which might improve the shot? Keep the background stars at the same scale so they don't appear to be part of the painting. Otherwise, nice work (and, uh, thanks for pointing me in the right direction )

My bad on this one. i rendered 2 different shots for this shot. 1 to use for this shot and a different camera movement shot for when Luke enters the trench. With the Luke shot i have the stars not joined to the new matte but for some reason i forgot to add the new star moving background in the shot in the clip. the stars were there just for movement reference. oh well. i decided that i didn't like the movement of the first trench shot so i have redone it. I've posted a new clip with a split screen comparison so you can see the differences between the new shots and the original SE ones. the shot of the TIEs leaving the docking bay has also been tweaked. Even though they remain in the original speed and flight plan they have independent movement although very subtle.
