Its pretty smooth Ady. Tonnes better than the original anyway. Nice work.

It looks good, adywan. Although, the motion really make me feel motion sick. I don't get bothered by motion sickness, but something about the way the shot is moving just make me feel somewhat sick. This isn't a criticism of the shot, because it looks good.

Adywan, that looks fine. I've just played it through about 20 times and still have trouble spotting where the join is. And the new edit now makes for a fantastic shot, way better than the original.

Adywan, can I make a suggestion which might improve the shot? Keep the background stars at the same scale so they don't appear to be part of the painting. Otherwise, nice work (and, uh, thanks for pointing me in the right direction )

I went to film school, have edited movies both digitally and the ol' fashioned way with razors and tape, and for the life of me I can't see an issue with this shot at all now that Ady's brisked it up. Maybe my eyes aren't fast enough, but the stars look fine to me, the motion is great and there's no longer the glaring matte to model shot.

Excellent and subtle work from one of our resident masters. By the way, Darth Editous, as you are one of the other resident editing masters in these parts, would you mind expanding on your mention about the scale of the stars in the shot. I am techno-curious about this and, as a former filmmaker, would like to learn more.

Thanks to both of you,

I like it. It makes my butt clinch, like your actually falling in the trench. I get the same feeling when the snow speeders are going UP and DOWN over the hills.

Sorry for that empty post.

Just watched the clip and I thought everything played off perfectly. The only thing I wish you could have done was give Vader and his other 2 ties some different pacing, and a bit of independant rotation as they fly out of the death star hanger. Vader should lead off first, and the other ties should follow behind, not all at the same time with the same movement. I realise the shot is really short but what the hey, try it out and see how it work's.

That looked great! The shot of Vader and the ties leaving the hanger looks off. It seems they ought to leave at about the same speed as the falcon did earlier in the film. I still can't tell where the edit is for the trench.

I haven't done anything to the speed in that shot i just banked the TIEs slightly. Don't forget the Falcon was reversing out of the docking bay so it would have been slower.

I don't have anything to say other than thank you Adywan. Thank you for all of your hours of work and dedication to this edit.....to what is looking like the most definitive SE edit ever.....

I love everybody. Lets all smoke some reefer and chill. Hug and kisses for everybody.

Adywan that was just fantastic work it looks amazing.

However I do see what Darth Editous was trying to say about the starfield at the start of the shot.

As the camera begins to angle towards the trench the starfield remains locked with the Death star and does not pan indepently.

Thanks.

It's similar to the problem with the view out of the escape pod window at the beginning of ANH. The Star Destroyer is receding into the distance, but so are the stars - but they should be effectively infinitely distant and shouldn't recede.

The effect in the trench shot is done by zooming into a static image (and very effectively, too, both originally and now). This zooms in on the stars as well, but they should stay at a constant scale.

Nah, I wouldn't sweat it too much, its not something that takes you out of the moment. I still think its a drastic improvement....

That shot was pretty smooth, Ady. There was just something about it that was a little off. I couldn't put my finger on what it was, but overall, a excellent shot.

I had the same feeling. Maybe the ships look a little too flat, like cutouts sliding across a background... but I'm not sure what you could do about it short of modeling the ships in CG, which I don't think would be worth the effort for such a brief shot.

Avoid infestation. Rotate.

I've always thought that the shot of the Y-wings' descent looked quite naff - they do just look far too flat. There must be a nice Y-wing wireframe out there somewhere for making a tasty CG replacement shot?

The shot in the clip are new Y-wings taken from an ILM model shot. The original ones were so flat and grey they looked like cardboard cut-outs. this shot is so short it wouldn't be worth all the work to create CG ships. i think the new shots works well anyway and doesn't look like cutouts.

My bad on this one. i rendered 2 different shots for this shot. 1 to use for this shot and a different camera movement shot for when Luke enters the trench. With the Luke shot i have the stars not joined to the new matte but for some reason i forgot to add the new star moving background in the shot in the clip. the stars were there just for movement reference. oh well. i decided that i didn't like the movement of the first trench shot so i have redone it. I've posted a new clip with a split screen comparison so you can see the differences between the new shots and the original SE ones. the shot of the TIEs leaving the docking bay has also been tweaked. Even though they remain in the original speed and flight plan they have independent movement although very subtle.

Big thanks for the split screen clip, Adywan! I spotted the independant movement on the Vader and his Ties shot as they leave the hanger; very, nice and It works for me! I also noticed the lazers in the trench from behind the rebel pilots, very nice touch!

Any chance to put the falcon struggling to go to light speed sound from TESB just before they go into hyperspace after escaping Mos Eisley? I think that would be a subtle bit of humor for the fans.

Adywan, thanks to you, if you do indeed finish this before the new year, no matter what gifts "Santa" gives my kids this Christmas, their Christmas won't even come close to Daddy's....as my oldest would say, this is "tight" or "sick" or....you get the picture.....
